Britney Spears' Family 'Railroads' Dr. Phil

While Britney Spears' life continues to resemble a slow motion train wreck, Dr. Phil was 'run over' by a representative of the Spears Clan on this morning's Today Show.

From the AP:
Lou Taylor, business manager for Britney Spears' mom, Lynne, and little sis, Jaime, appeared on the Today Show:
"The family basically extended an invitation of trust for him to come in as a support them, not to go out and make public statements," Taylor said.

"Any statement publicly that he made, because he was brought in under this cloak of trust, (is) just inappropriate."
This was in response to Dr. Phil coming forward soon after Britney Spears was released from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after an apparent "mini-meltdown".
"My meeting with Britney and some family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention," McGraw told the programs.

"She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her," he said. Source - myway
Dr. Phil announced that he would be taping an hour long "retrospective" show on Monday. Just a few mere days after Britney's release from the hospital and without Britney's presence.
Taylor said McGraw was invited to the hospital by Spears' family, but "he was not invited to make this part of a public display or part of the media." [AP]
It was then we felt, that the lines between friendship, concern, and viewer ratings had blurred.

On Monday night's Entertainment Tonight, Dr. Phil responded to charges his motives were less than pure.
"Somebody needs to step up and get this young woman into some quality care and I do not apologize one whit, not one second, for trying to make that happen," he said.
We were part of the "what were you thinking, Dr. Phil" crowd. On Monday we wrote about Dr. Phil's decision to cancel the hour long Britney "perspective".
Dr. Phil backed down from the planned Britney piece today claiming the climate within Britney's world and family "too tense".

Yes. Well. Talking about Britney and her "problems" without Britney's presence would have been "one-sided" no matter how Dr. Phil couched the terms or put in the guise of a psychological "discussion".

No matter how intellectual the conversation it's still talking (using) someone else's problems, tragedy in some manner. If it's used to garner ratings then it's crass.

Dr. Phil and his customary guests are usually real people not pop princesses. Britney's problems, that of being raised a child star, singing and starring in suggestive videos in her teenage years, earning millions of dollars before her 20th birthday, we find it hard to believe that any audience could relate. If we were in the audience of a Dr. Phil Versus The Spears Clan talk show, we'd cheer Dr. Phil, because, good God, the man is right. That young woman needs help!

We pounded on Dr. Phil's methods and his motives but in the end, the man knows what he's talking about. Getting bogged down in minutiae only enables the Spears Clan to rally around and attack Dr. Phil, something dysfunctional families are famous for. As long as you have "enemies" you never have to look at yourselves.

The height of the Spears Family silliness was Mother Lynne's plan to publish a book on parenting.

Michelle Williams has written a great piece:
I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on Lynn Spears' parenting book. I'm thrilled to be able to recommend this book to new parents out there who want to do a bang-up job on raising their kids as well as Lynn Spears, mother to Britney Spears and the 16 year old star of Zoey, Jamie Lynn, who just KOd her career as a wholesome young teen by announcing that she is pregnant by her live-in boyfriend.

Some of the topics cover: "How to get your kids to really work for you," "how to push, push, push your kids into show business at all costs," "how to get your daughter to remain a virgin until her 12th birthday," "ignore your son - boys can't make as much in show biz as girls," "How to effectively manage your child's career," "How to get the hairdresser to give your five year old daughter a dye job," "where you can go to get your 13 year old breast implants," and more. Dr. Phil, we were less than charitable to your public attempts to help Britney. But we've realized something important. Your methods were different, out there, in the open, but sincere. No matter how the "message" was delivered, it was right on the money. It seems no one can get through to this young woman or her family.

While the rest of us watch the slow motion train wreck that's Britney's Spears' life, you decided to take action and help. The Spears Clan Crazy Train just ran over you, Dr. Phil. You're a big guy and can handle it. As for the Spears Clan, we're not sure about them, just run like hell and get out of the way!
