Wednesday, two boys, ages 12 and 14, walked into the lobby of the Port St. Lucie Police Station in Florida and "ordered an aide behind a glass enclosure to put up her hands and hand over all her money".
It was the 12-year-old who kept one hand in his pocket as though he held a gun, then picked up a telephone handset and barked out the "hand's up" order to the aide.
According to the Palm Beach Post, the 12-year-old then paced around the lobby, "pointing at his eyes then at an aide, as if to say, "I'm watching you"." It was then that the aide ran screaming to the back of the station.
A half a dozen officers had just returned to the building from defensive tactics training. They stormed the building, one had his gun drawn.
According to the police the boys laughed when they were arrested and neither showed remorse. Evidently the 14-yr-old was no stranger to breaking the law as he was charged with violating his probation. Both boys were booked into a juvenile detention center.
We looked at the data on Port St. Lucie, not a large city, the population in 2006 was close to 140,000, with the median resident age of 39.9 years with an estimated medium household income in 2005 of $49,296 while the estimated medium condo/house value was listed at $227,000.
The crime statistics seem to portray a relatively crime-free area with only one murder, 17 rapes, 27 robberies, 242 assaults, 770 burglaries, 144 auto thefts, and 11 cases of arson listed in 2007.
The average household size is 2.6 people with the percentage of family households, 75.9%. The percentage of residents living in poverty in 2005, 5.8%.
Was this a case of "dumb and dumber" or was it something else? And which of the boys was the "mastermind?"
Why would two boys who live in such an idyllic setting spend their time attempting to rob a police station instead of playing baseball or frolicking at the beach?
We may never know since they'll probably be tried in juvenile court where the records will remain sealed.
