Shoot Up Rooms:

The Future of San Francisco?

Another front in the War on Drugs? California's Silicon Valley is a land of firsts: microchips, vast computer networks, software and--shoot-up rooms. The corporate hub of the area is San Francisco. Safe-injection rooms may be coming there soon. From Sign On San Diego:
SAN FRANCISCO – City health officials took the first tentative steps Thursday toward opening the nation's first legal safe-injection room, where addicts could shoot up heroin, cocaine and other drugs under the supervision of nurses.

Hoping to reduce San Francisco's high rate of fatal drug overdoses, the public health department co-sponsored a symposium on the only such facility in North America, a 4-year-old Vancouver site where an estimated 700 intravenous users a day self-administer narcotics.

Sometimes one reads a newspiece and is not sure about how to take it. The libertarian take: this is a job government should not be doing. An anti-drug war take: this shouldn't be against the law. A rational Christian take: somewhere, more self-control and an appeal to a power higher than San Francisco's city officials are probably what's needed.

On those pieces, one maintains an uneasy silence.
