Received Nearly Half-Million Dollars
From Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae:
Dodd, Kerry, Obama, Clinton, Kanjorski

Dodd, Obama got nearly a quarter-million dollars from Freddie, Fannie

It's like sending the foxes to fix the hole in the chicken coop.

Senators Chris Dodd and Barack Obama, among others, have stepped up to "fix" the financial crisis, brought on in large part by the implosion of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Dodd and Obama were two of the three largest recipients of Freddie-Fannie campaign contributions.

The Freddie-Fannie Five

1. Sen. Dodd, Christopher J (D-CT) - $133,900
2. Sen. Kerry, John (D-MA) -- $111,000
3. Sen. Obama, Barack (D-IL) - $105,849
4. Sen. Clinton, Hillary (D-NY) - $75,550
5. Rep. Kanjorski, Paul E (D-PA) - $65,500

The top five received nearly one-half million dollars from the FMx2. Dodd and Obama received almost a quarter million from the failed quasi-government agencies between the two of them.

From Open Secrets.org, "Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Invest in Democrats":

(For an updated chart that includes contributions from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae's PACs and employees to ALL lawmakers back to 1989, including to their leadership PACs, go here.) and data The federal government recently announced that it will come to the rescue of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, two embattled mortgage buyers that for years have pursued a lobbying strategy to get lawmakers on their side. Both companies have poured money into lobbying and campaign contributions to federal candidates, parties and committees as a general tactic, but they've also directed those contributions strategically. In the 2006 election cycle, Fannie Mae was giving 53 percent of its total $1.3 million in contributions to Republicans, who controlled Congress at that time. This cycle, with Democrats in control, they've reversed course, giving the party 56 percent of their total $1.1 million in contributions. Similarly, Freddie Mac has given 53 percent of its $555,700 in contributions to Democrats this cycle, compared to the 44 percent it gave during 2006.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have also strategically given more contributions to lawmakers currently sitting on committees that primarily regulate their industry. Fifteen of the 25 lawmakers who have received the most from the two companies combined since the 1990 election sit on either the House Financial Services Committee; the Senate Banking, Housing & Urban Affairs Committee; or the Senate Finance Committee. The others have seats on the powerful Appropriations or Ways & Means committees, are members of the congressional leadership or have run for president. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.), chairman of the Senate banking committee, has received the most from Fannie and Freddie's PACs and employees ($133,900 since 1989). Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.) has received $65,500. Kanjorski chairs the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government-Sponsored Enterprises, and Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae are government-sponsored enterprises, or GSEs.

The airwaves yesterday were full of Barack Obama making statements and posturing on the crisis.

Nowhere in any of the Obama statements was any mention of his relationship with Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae.

The Obama campaign showed rare judgment in this decision.

Yesterday may not have been the right time to mention his failed benefactors.

Ten Jokes from the 2008 Democrat Convention
Ten Jokes from the 2004 Convention

Hillary Clinton's about to speak at the 2008 Democrat National Convention. With that in mind, we now present 20 Democrat Convention jokes: ten from Denver and ten from the 2004 Dem Convo in Boston.

---2008 Democrat Convention---

"The theme of the Democratic Convention is unity. Unfortunately they can't agree on how that works." --David Letterman

"Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will not be going to the Dem convo, yeah, having some problems. As you know he originally got in trouble for allegedly having an affair and lying about it, to which John Edwards said, 'That's illegal?'" --Jay Leno

"This Thursday, Barack Obama is gonna give his acceptance speech, and reportedly it's going to include performances by Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. Yeah. And they say Obama's not black enough!" --Conan O'Brien

"Of course, Obama's supporters got him his usual birthday gift of gold, frankincense and myrrh." --Jay Leno

-----

"Well you know at the Democratic Convention this week in Denver, both Bill and Hillary will be speaking. Not to each other, of course." --Jay Leno

"Joe Biden is Barack Obama's running mate. Yeah nothing says change like a guy who's been in the Senate for 35 years" --David Letterman

"As you know, John McCain is an older, white-haired man who has been in the Senate for over twenty years, voted for the Iraq War, and said Barack Obama did not have the experience to be president. I'm sorry, that's our intro for next week when Joe Biden is on, I got confused." --Jay Leno

"Yeah, the Democratic Convention is in Denver, and security is tight out there, it is very tight, it's tighter than Nancy Pelosi's face." --David Letterman

"And Barack Obama now says he is open to offshore oil drilling. So, apparently, when he promised change, he was talking about his mind. I guess that's what that was." --Jay Leno

---Democrat 2004 Convention---

"The Democratic National Convention continued in Boston as rising star Barack Obama wowed the crowd with the best keynote address in recent memory. Obama was so impressive, the party's considering having him give John Kerry's concession speech." —Craig Kilborn

"John Edwards spoke at the Democratic Convention. He described John Kerry by saying, 'He's strong, decisive, and hogs the covers.'" —Craig Kilborn

"The Democratic National Committee released it's lineup of the politicians that will speak at the convention and Hillary Clinton is not on the list. But today Bill told her don't feel bad, none of his other women are speaking either." —Jay Leno

"Did you see any of that convention? Oh, my God. Wow! For that kind of excitement you had to go back to the Gore/Lieberman era." —David Letterman

"How many of you saw John Kerry's acceptance speech? It's the first time he's ever said 'I do' and didn't get any money." —Craig Kilborn

-----

"At the convention John Kerry showed up with all his Vietnam crewmates. And not to be outdone, next month at the Republican Convention George W. Bush is going to show up with all his college drinking buddies." —David Letterman

"Did you see John Edwards speaking? His speech was so dull that Teresa Heinz Kerry told him to shove it!" —David Letterman

"Edwards' speech was so good, when he finished, the delegates awarded him $80 million plus punitive damages." —Jay Leno

"The Democratic National Convention gets under way this week in Boston, which is tragically preparing for its turn at the national stage. By the way, all the security isn't to keep people out -- it's to keep people in during Hillary's speech." —Craig Kilborn

"The Kerry campaign said that John Kerry will show his softer side at the convention. You already see him and Edwards fondling each other. What, are they going to be spooning now?" —Jay Leno

Kerry Now Ready to Counter Swift Boat Accusations--Three Years Later

Three years after Democrats penciled "Swift Boat" into their little red Ideological Dictionary of Rhetoric, John Kerry is finally ready to erase their doubts. Democrats decried the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth's message, but neglected to ever address, refute or otherwise counter their charges.

Three year later, John Kerry is ready to go. More on Kerry coming "Swift Boat"-ing of the Swift Boat Veterans from Fox News:
Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, perhaps preparing to get back into the presidential ring one day, claims he's now armed with materials that will make war record critics from his 2004 presidential campaign go running tail between legs.

The 63-year-old Democratic senator told The Patriot-Ledger on Tuesday that the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a group of Navy servicemen who served with Kerry and criticized his record in Vietnam, will be revealed as liars.

"We have put together a documented portfolio that frankly puts their lies in such a total light of absurdity and indecency, that should they ever rear their ugly heads again, we have every single 't’ crossed and 'i’ dotted, and I welcome that in a sense,'' Kerry said after addressing Boston's South Shore Chamber of Commerce. "It’s a shame we weren’t able to produce all that at the time.''

Kerry, who is up for re-election next year for a fifth term in the U.S. Senate, added that he regrets that he was slow to counter accusations against him during the 2004 presidential campaign, and thinks that Republicans have descended into pure deception to win votes.
It only took three years for Kerry to act. Or claim he's going to act. Or issue a press release saying he's going to act. This was someone who wanted to become commander-in-chief?

At this rate, if Kerry had been president when Pearl Harbor was bombed, World War II might have been lost by the time he would have declared war. Or said he was going to declare war. Or asked the Vichy French if it was okay to declare war.
"I have no doubt at all that some of the people involved on the other side don’t care about the truth, think nothing about distorting it, will not hesitate to say and do whatever they think is necessary to win,'' Kerry told the newspaper. "But I think we are now much more prepared and savvy about those kind of things, and certainly in my own involvement, I will make certain that people don’t get away with that.''
Well, it's certainly easy to see why someone who supposedly spent "Christmas in Cambodia" would care about the truth. As Mark Steyn noted during Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign:
When John Kerry says he supports the Kyoto Treaty even though he voted for a bill that declared the United States would never ever ratify it, that doesn't mean he's a 'liar', it just means that, well, to be honest, I haven't a clue what it means... I wouldn't call Sen. Kerry a liar. But I did get the vague feeling in the following exchange that, if it had gone on a minute or two longer, the candidate's nose would have cracked my TV screen, extended across the coffee table and pinned me to the wall.

--No lie: Kerry's just a wannabe

True to the Official Democrat Established Rules on Dealing with Unpleasant Actions That are Exposed in the Press Handbook, Rule #1 is to deny it. Rule #2 is to sign on all your DonkeyBuddies to deny it along with you. Since a sympathetic press in most big cities will cooperate, metropolitan cab drivers will now be onboard. That helps the 'word on the street'.

Rules 3,4 and 5 involve shouting down, slandering or casting aspersions on the person(s) making the accusation d'jour. Pity Kerry didn't have his own private 'media watchdog', like Hillary's Media Matters. If he'd had David Brock on his payroll, perhaps he'd be issuing his belated release from the Oval Office.

So John Kerry still hasn't done anything other than issue the press release, call someone "liars" and prepare for action. Hopefully, Senator Kerry may roust himself from his Swift Boat somnambulism in the next couple months.

Finally, he'll tell the truth. Finally, he'll face his accusers.

Three years late.

At Christmas.

In Cambodia.

Maybe.
