A WORLD OF NEWS

  1. Remember when it was an American possession? Russian warship to cross Panama Canal.
A Russian warship will sail through the Panama Canal this week for the first time since World War II, the navy announced Wednesday, pushing ahead with a symbolic projection of Moscow's power in a traditional U.S. zone of influence.

Another legacy of the great Jimmy Carter years.

  2. Not good: We were trained by Pak navy: Captured terrorist.
Azam Amir, the terrorist who was held by the Mumbai Police, has made some striking revelations regarding the Mumbai terror attacks. Azam has disclosed that the Pakistan Navy had trained the terrorists in boating and swimming to carry out the attacks in Mumbai. Azam was arrested on Wednesday from Girgaum Chowpatty in an encounter with the police. Ismail Khan, an accomplice of Amir, reportedly died in the gunbattle.

Obviously, Pakistan's new president needs to get segments of its military under control.

  3. And how do you suppose the Indian authorities got the information out of Azam Amir? Mumbai police to use truth serum on 'baby-faced' terrorist Azam Amir Kasab.

  4. MORE MUMBAI. The real drug war might be in India: Mumbai bombers 'took cocaine and LSD' before carrying out attacks. A little buzz before the bombing takes the edge off--or puts it on.

QUICK HITTERS

  • World's Oldest Pot Stash Found: Huge Stash of Marijuana Found in Ancient Tomb.
An ancient Caucasian people, probably the Indo-European-speaking Yuezhi whose fair-haired mummies keep turning up in Xinjiang province, seem to have buried one of their shamans with a whopping 789 grams of high-potency pot 2,700 years ago.

If that mummy had been caught in Cleveland with 1.75 pounds today, he would face another burial.

  • Minneapolis discovery costs Franken 36 votes
Elections officials in Minnesota's largest city today discovered that one precinct came up 133 ballots short of election day totals, resulting in a net loss for Democratic challenger Al Franken of 36 votes.

That negates an earlier pickup of 37 votes for Franken in Maplewood.

Ambinder: "The birth charge is specious and has been convincingly refuted." Of course, it hasn't, but what else would readers expect Ambinder to write? Much easier to link to snopes and their COLB digital image than to do a bit of independent research on his own.

  1. Harvard's endowment takes it on the chin. The financial crisis has walloped the lib university to the tune of over $8 billion.
Harvard University's endowment suffered investment losses of at least 22% in the first four months of the school's fiscal year, the latest evidence of the financial woes facing higher education. The Harvard endowment, the biggest of any university, stood at $36.9 billion as of June 30, meaning the loss amounts to about $8 billion. That's more than the entire endowments of all but six colleges, according to the latest official tally.

Forgettable Chuck Hagel: Senator WHO Attacks Rush Limbaugh

Chuck Hagel Attacks Rush Limbaugh: Senator WHO Retires Gracelessly

at DBKP - Death By 1000 Papercuts.com - DBKP

Chuck Who?

Chuck Hagel celebrated the end of a Washington career by attacking Rush Limbaugh and others in Congress who disagreed with him.

"We are educated by the great entertainers like Rush Limbaugh," Hagel said Tuesday during a speech in Washington, according to the Huffington Post.

"You know, I wish Rush Limbaugh and others like that would run for office," a sarcastic Hagel continued. "They have so much to contribute and so much leadership and they have an answer for everything. And they would be elected overwhelmingly. [The truth is] they try to rip everyone down and make fools of everybody but they don't have any answers."

"The American people don't like what is going on… they want us to start doing what leaders are expected to do, address the problems, find some consensus to governing. Get along. There will be disagreements, sure… but in the end we can't hold ourselves captives to this raw, partisan, political paralysis."

The Wit and Wisdom of Chuck Hagel

Hagel has compiled quite a record during his 12-year tenure in the U.S. Senate.

Hagel was initially elected in 1996 in a stunning upset that might be called "ethically-challenged".

[Hagel] also served as a Chairman and was CEO of American Information Systems Inc. (AIS), a voting machine manufacturer, this same company electronically counted 80% of the votes in the state in the very same election that he had his stunning upset. He did not disclose his position as CEO of the company in his mandated disclosures, until its name-change to Election Systems & Software (ES&S) in 1997. He had ownership interest in ES&S through its parent company The McCarthy Group as of January 29, 2003, when The Hill reported that, due to his ownership interest, “Hagel’s ethics filings pose disclosure issue”.

Hagel has been mentioned--most notably by his staff--as a cabinet possibility in the upcoming Obama administration. Failing that, he may return to lobbying.

Hagel will most be remembered for

Friends of the Senator, who wished to remain off-the-record, did say that "he works and plays well with others".

MSM Obsessed with Recession: Shumer Relieved

CULTURE WATCH, Volume 23
by Nancy Morgan
Right Bias

"Listen to me, dammit!"

As we head closer to the election, Democrat's efforts to talk down the economy have intensified. Obama declared Saturday "there is little doubt we've moved into recession."

Memo to Obama: For the record, a recession is defined as two quarters with negative growth. We haven't even had one quarter with negative growth so - its official. We Are Not In A Recession.

Sen. Schumer (D-N.Y.) took the campaign to downplay the economy a step further. Federal regulators claim comments and a publicly released letter from Sen. Schumer, raising concerns about Indy Mac Bank's solvency, caused depositors to withdraw more than $1.3 billion from their accounts. Which resulted in it being seized by federal regulators, in one of the largest bank failures in US history. Thanks, Chuckie. Next step: Blame Bush.

Big news you may have missed. The Iranian missile tests that pushed up the price of oil last week were faked. A fake photo released by Sepah News (Iranian News) turned up on the front pages of LA Times, BBC, NY Times,..well, you get the idea. Turns out the pictures were fauxtography. Oops.
Iranian missile test - faked pohoto

GOOD NEWS:

There was so much positive news out of Iraq last week (unreported by the old media) that I don't have enough space for all of it. I write about it in my new column 'We Won.'

More bad news for the New York Times as their stock hit a 10-year low last week after another downgrade. I'm smiling.

In case you haven't yet heard, the earth is not melting. The journal Science published a seventeen year study of Greenland's ice sheet that flatly contradicts all such hysterical claims. Space and Science goes further showing that the earth's cycle of global warming has ended and the earth has entered into a period of global cooling.

A proposed law in Fremont, Nebraska aims to make illegal immigrants, well, illegal. The left is outraged. Yawn.

Unless a judge intervenes, South Carolina (my adopted state) will begin issuing faith based license plates. Apropos of nothing, a federal judge has thrown out former California congressman Gary Condit's defamation lawsuit against Dominick Dunne. Remember Chandra Levy?

GOVERNMENT AT WORK:

Democrats are standing firm on keeping Americans from drilling for oil, which we have in abundance. This, despite a Pew research poll which shows fully half of all Americans now support drilling - up from 42% five months ago.

Congress tucked $277.9 million worth of pork into the appropriations bill it passed before leaving for the fourth of July holiday. That's a 122% increase over last year's bill. California has made it mandatory for cars to be labelled with 'global warming scores'. Rasmussen reports that congressional approval ratings are now in the single digits - for the first time ever. Just so.

CULTURE:

The Green Party has picked Cynthia McKinney as their presidential pick for 2008. Dog meat has been taken off the menus in China in preparation for the Olympics.

Barbara Walters celebrated the fourth of July with Syrian dictator Assad. She described this anti-American tyrant as charming and intelligent. Random House is set to release a nasty, fictionalized Laura Bush book and the Seattle Opera has decided to designate Friday nights as lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender nights. Meanwhile, Massachusetts has decided to 'expand' gay marriages. Lovely.

More good news for gays as McDonald's takes up the rhetoric of gay activists, suggesting that anyone that opposes same-sex marriage is motivated by hate. Next thing you know, Ronald will be coming out of the closet. No more Big Macs for me.

Speaking of food, world leaders at the G8 summit dined on a six-course lunch, followed by an eight-course dinner as they gathered to address how to address world hunger. Snack on that.

PC MADNESS:

Plans in Britain to clear undergrowth from a gay sex spot have been branded as discriminating against gays and British toddlers who turn up their nose at spicy food from overseas could be branded racist by a government agency. A British airport has advertised for an air traffic controller. All applicants are offered an application pack in braille.

The American Medical Association is issuing a formal apology for past racial discrimination. Mea culpa. No cure yet found for the newly discovered syndrome of brown nosing.

ESSENTIAL TRIVIA:

According to a new study, the last quarter century has seen a dramatic increase in the frequency of sex among the 70 year-old set.

Scientists in Argentina are strapping plastic bags on cows in order to better understand the effect of cow flatulence on global warming.

Play Stations, new kitchens and art classes are part of Saudi Arabia's soft, squishy approach to rehabilitating terrorists. Barack Obama graces the cover of Rolling Stone, for the second time. Looks like the new messiah is now also a rock star. Sigh. A computer system called Polaris outperformed some of the world's top poker players at a human-vs-machine competition in Las Vegas.

Check out trailer for the movie environmentalists don't want you to see. 'Not Evil, Just Wrong.'

Amazing photos

IDIOT OF THE WEEK:

We have another tie this week. I can't figure out which guy is stupider: Representative Edward Markey (D-Mass.) who told high school seniors that climate change had caused Hurricane Katrina and the conflict in Darfur or:

L.F. Eason III, a 29-year veteran of the state Department of Agriculture who quit his job rather than fly the N. Carolina flag at half mast to honor Jesse Helms.

Or maybe the surfer dude in New Smyrna beach in Florida, who knowingly surfs in the shark-bite capital of the world. So many idiots, so little space.

Till next Monday, keep smiling,

EU Healthcare: Bringing the US Care as Good as Any Third World Country

A 2-Pack of 3-Wood

Van Halen: Somebody Get Me a Doctor
US Festival, 1983

Shalom, Feral Nation!

Today's topic is the EU healthcare-o-rama and why you should care.

I strongly advise that voters in the US pay careful attention to what is going on with the socialized medical care system in the EU, cause that is very likely what you will get if Obama ends up in the White House.

Therefore, the latest in the EU is this:
In an effort to shift around the service delivery problems inherent in a socialized medical care delivery system, the EU is now going to allow medical care tourism.

EU plans cross border healthcare

"The European Commission is poised to unveil a healthcare package that could give patients new rights to seek medical treatment elsewhere in the EU.

Patients would not have to get their doctor's approval for non-hospital care abroad, officials are quoted as saying."

Bottom line is, if the que by you is too long, you can go elsewhere for treatment. Of course, the real issue boils down to payment.

"Only costs similar to those in a patient's home state would be covered. About 1% of operations performed in the EU involve people from other countries.

Non-hospital care would be reimbursed by the home state up to the level the patient could expect at home, according to reports.

But the state would not reimburse expensive treatment received abroad that was unavailable in the patient's home country."

So what you will have is people shifting to service delivery areas that run more efficiently and probably overwhelming it. Then when the service delivery site goes to get paid the problems will occur. I expect that the service delivery site will either get stiffed and eventually cut services offered or will go after the patient for the difference.

Again, keep an eye on this situation folks, this is what many politicians have in mind for the US.

Obama: Liberal MSM and the Barack Blackness Meter

The Right Color instead of The Right Stuff

The favorite parlor game for liberal, MSM reporters and commentators must be, "Ask Me A Non-Question". Mixing business and pleasure during the spring 2007, they obsessived over the following non-question: "Is Barack Obama black enough?".

By posing non-questions, liberals can give non-answers, which suits them for several reasons. First, it satisfies their regular readers/viewers that they are all thinking. Secondly, it shows they all "care", by just asking. Lastly, they don't have to address real questions: those have much harder solutions.

Asking a non-question to a liberal is like waving the green starting flag at Darlington.

Google the search term, "is obama black enough" and it returns 2.78 million references--overwhelmingly from liberal blogs, newspapers and magazines. It isn't surprising: it was a non-question and any old non-answer was sufficient.

Asking hard, real questions about whether a first-term senator from Illinois had "The Right Stuff", the liberal media was manic about "The Right Color"--or, to be more exact, the right shade of color.

Here's a few representative samples:

As much as his biracial identity has helped Obama build a sizable following in middle America, it's also opened a gap for others to question his authenticity as a black man. In calling Obama the "first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," the implication was that the black people who are regularly seen by whites — or at least those who aspire to the highest office in the land — are none of these things.
--Is Obama Black Enough?
Time: Feb 1 2007
The Democratic hopeful Barack Obama could become the US's first black president. Yet, with his mixed-race background, Ivy League education and midwestern accent, one of his greatest challenges has been convincing African-Americans that he is 'one of us'.
--Is Barack Obama Black Enough?
The Guardian: Gary Younge, March 1 2007

Black enough for government work?

That was the question 60 Minutes correspondent Steve Kroft posed to Obama in an interview that aired on Sunday. Kroft asked the biracial senator why he considered himself black even though he was raised in a white household. Obama responded by telling Kroft that he never decided to be black: “I think if you look African-American in this society, you’re treated as an African-American.”
--Is Obama Black enough?
Columbia Journalism Review, Sarah Sarmah Feb 15 2007

Liberals asked, "What's exactly the right color?"

It was as if American Liberalism had regressed 250 years, to the days of the mulatto, quadroon and octoroon.
The terms mulatto, quadroon, and octoroon originated with the racial policies of European colonizers in the Americas, especially the Spanish. Because civil rights and responsibilities were based directly on the degree of European blood that a person had, such classifications were highly elaborated, and minor distinctions in ancestry were carefully recorded. While these terms have highly precise definitions, in actual practice they were often used based on impressions of skin color rather than definite knowledge of ancestry.
--Ask.com: Octoroon
Conservatives mostly commented on the media's interest in a non-question. The question itself was absurd, as was the liberal's fascination with it. If Obama held conservative positions on the issues, he could have been a bright blue.

"Black enough" non-questions are best left to be considered by the liberal Left. Those that practice racial identity politics are better equipped to comment on that which is familiar.

Apparently, liberals decided that Barack Obama was "black enough". The question disappeared and won't be seen again--unless Obama does something to anger a segment of the black population.

In which case, it will be like waving a red flag to a bull--and liberals will get to play their favorite game once again.
