Real Housewives of Orange County: Gretchen's Tragedy, Glass Houses

Your Ad Here

Real Housewives, Orange County version:
Nice Guy Jeff Beitzel Passes Away
Who's Throwing Stones?

It's season four of Housewives with two new additions: 30-yr-old Gretchen Rossi and Lynne Curtain. Curtain replaced Lauri Waring Peterson after Peterson opted to drop out of the show when her son was arrested for drug possession.

The storyline surrounding Gretchen has her dealing with her boyfriend Jeff's bout with leukemia. Jeff Beitzel, who was fifty-four, passed away in September.

Beitzel served as Chief Operating Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Quantuam Fuel System Technologies. A mechanical enigineer, Beitzel worked for Ford Motor Co. until 1983. After leaving Ford, Beitzel founded several automotive companies prior to working for Quantuam.

Jeff Beitzel's three children from a former marriage were on the most recent episode. The kids, all in their teens, had flown in to be with their father while he was in the hospital. All three of Jeff's children wanted to be there with their father. They also spoke highly of Gretchen and how she had been by their father's side during the eight months since he had been diagnosed with cancer.

Last week Gretchen took some time off and spent a couple of days with her family at Bear Lake for the Fourth.

So far new Housewife Lynne has been in a shopping mode on the show with her two teenage daughters. The latest trip on episode 5 had Lynne plunking down $1800 for eight articles of clothing and looking to buy a BMW for her oldest daughter when she turned 18.

Lynne met Gretchen for lunch where Gretchen tried to get Lynne to tell how old she was. Lynne, who keeps in great shape with activities such as surfing and kick boxing, wouldn't tell Gretchen her age. On the first show featuring Lynne she admitted she was "obsessed" with "staying young" even though raising her two daughters, ages 16 and 18, have probably put a few gray hairs on her head.

On tonight's show, Lynne's oldest daughter, Raquel, turned 18. Lynne and her husband of 18 years, Frank, held a luncheon for Raquel where they presented her with a cute little silver BMW. Earlier, before the party, Raquel demanded her younger sister Alexa take off the white dress she had chosen to wear. Raquel wanted to wear the white one and for Alexa to wear a blue dress that Raquel was supposed to wear. Such is the drama of having teens, as Raquel pouted her way into getting the white dress while Alexa wore the blue one.

Alexa was in tears at the party after she met her boyfriend in the parking lot of the restaurant and her boyfriend told her the dress made her look like a "stripper". Lynne was shocked at his comment as it was her dress. And yes, the dress did look as though it belonged more on a stripper than a 16-yr-old girl.

What side is Tamra Barney showing this season?

Date My Ex: Jo and Slade, First Real Housewives of Orange County Spinoff

The Real Housewives of Orange County has its first spin-off: Date My Ex: Jo and Slade. The show debuted on Bravo, Monday, July 21.

The show, starring Jo De La Rosa and ex-boyfriend, Slade Smiley, touts itself as a "reality" show. While we get to follow Jo as she releases her first album and lives the single life in LA, we're not so sure how "realistic" the show's premise is: Jo will date several guys who, get this, have to live in Slade's house and undergo a Slade purview if they want to pursue the lovely ex-Housewive from Orange County.

Monday's night show was a trip down memory lane with clips of Jo and Slade from Real Housewives.

The "flashback" included snippets of Jo in a little French maid outfit, Slade mentioning the cost of their upcoming nuptials which never occurred: $100,000, Jo and Slade making out with Jo going topless (nice shot of Jo boob's), and Slade removing the license plate from Jo's car after they broke up.

Jo and Slade broke up and made up, several times. Jo was bored being a "housewife" even though she admitted she never cooked. Yet feather dusting in the little French Maid outfit with the 5 inch heels plus the stress of shopping can be exhausting, so we do give her points on that.

Jo was 12 years younger than Slade and destined to be his 3rd wife. When Jo came home and announced she had gotten a job, Slade threw a hissy fit. Slade was upset over her decision to get a job. We're not sure why, as Jo explained to Slade that she had grown "bored" staying at home. Slade, instead of congratulating her on getting a new job, became angry and then told Jo that she should know" he always "supported her". Financially, sure, but not so much emotionally, as the relationship seemed to be one of Slade controlling Jo while Jo enjoyed the perks until boredom seeped in.

Jo moved to LA with Slade not far behind. But not before Slade discovered Jo strumming a guitar. He ran out and found a record producer and got Jo an audition. Jo's album, Unscripted, will be released August 19. Oddly enough, the first single is "You Can't Control Me".

Real Housewives: Jeanna's Husband, 6 Months in Jailhouse

Real life means jail time for one of the reality "stars" of the Real Housewives of Orange County.

Jeanna's soon to be ex-husband, Matt Keough, was sentenced to six months in jail and had his probation reinstated. Judge Thomas Borris had the discretion to sentence Keough to up to 5 years in prison for violating the terms of his parole. The site, The Insider, has more.

An ex-all star pitcher for the Oakland A's, Keough's troubles with the bottle has been a taboo topic on the popular Bravo TV reality series, Real Housewives of Orange County.

Keough, rarely seen during the series' first two seasons, was battling his own demons, that of probation officers, rehabs, and attempts to curb binge drinking.

This season on Real Housewives has Jeanna dealing with the breakup of her marriage with Matt. The reasons given didn't include Matt serving a seven week sentence in the Newport Beach City Jail.

Matt had been released less than a week earlier from the Newport Jail. His parole was based on an incident in 2005 where Keough's life began to spiral further out of control after getting convicted of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Keough checked himself into the Betty Ford Clinic for a month plus a five months' stint at Sober Living by the Sea, a Newport Beach outpatient program. Matt's absences from the show were explained as "Dad's away working."

Keough was arrested on December 18th after spending "several" days binge drinking at a local hotel. This violated the terms of the 2005 incident and incurred the wrath of the judge who ordered Keough to remain in jail until the January 11th decision by Judge Borris. Borris told Keough that this was his "last chance."

Keough's attorney, Joseph McGinley, said his client was committed to getting the help he needs.

Keough's life wasn't always a grim fight with alcohol and irate judges. He was named to the All-Star Team his rookie season in 1978 with the Athletics with an ERA of 3.24 and a 8-15 won-loss record.

Matt's success was up and down. The next season his pitching was dismal, but by the next year he had a resurgence. He married Jeanna, a former Playboy centerfold, in 1980. By 1983 he was traded to the Yankees and struggled with a rotator cuff injury which placed him on the disabled list.

In 1984 his career landed in the minors. He went over to Japan in 1987 where he pitched for the Hanshin Tigers until 1990.

Matt tried out with the 91' Angels and failed to make the cut. The following year he was in the process of trying out once again for the Angels when he was hit by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout.
In 1992, Keough was nearly killed when he was hit in the head by a line drive while sitting in the dugout during an Anaheim Angels exhibition game at spring training in Arizona.

"We're convinced that this (drinking) is related to the brain injury that he suffered," Keough's attorney, Dan Grigsby, said Friday.

Grigsby said. "I've known him since high school and he hasn't been the same since."
Source - SFGate
The ball struck him in the right temple. His injury, life threatening, was the final blow to his career.

Matt worked as a minor league scout for the Angels from 92 to 99. He went to work for the General Manager of the Oakland A's, then alcohol came into play.

In April of 2005:
Keough, 52, spent three months behind bars after pleading guilty to drunken driving for a 2005 accident. Authorities said Keough was driving to his home in Coto de Caza when his sport utility vehicle rear-ended another SUV at a red light in Rancho Santa Margarita. The other car was pushed into a man who was pushing a bicycle across the street. The man was briefly hospitalized for a knee injury.

The incident occurred after a family fight and Keough's blood-alcohol level was found to be 2 1/2 times the legal limit, authorities said. Source - SFGate
One month earlier, the hit Reality series, Real Housewives of Orange County made its premier.
The Real Housewives of Orange County" will follow five sophisticated women and their families who lead glamorous lives in a picturesque Southern California gated community where the average home has a $1.6 million price tag and residents include CEOs and retired professional athletes. Orange County "housewives" Kimberly, Jeana, Vicki, Lauri and Jo are used to the good life and will do everything they can to hang on to it. The women each have their own personal story to share, and they've granted Bravo an all-access pass into their lives, families, friendships, careers, and homes. From diamond parties to Botox sessions to the stress of having a high-powered career, the women take viewers along for the ride and into their real-life dramas that show how life isn't always perfect behind the gates. Just what lies beneath the surface of this "perfect" community? Source - Reality TV

Meet Jeanna:
Full name is Jeana Keough.
40-something.
Former Playboy Playmate and actress.
Wife of Matt Keough, a former major league baseball star.
Mother of three teenagers.
Sells real estate "for fun."
Source - About.com
Jeanna and Matt's problem with alcoholism are no different than millions of other Americans.
According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, almost 18 million Americans abuse alcohol. Each year more than 100,000 Americans die of alcohol-related causes. Alcohol is a factor in nearly half of all U.S. traffic deaths.

Alcoholism and alcohol abuse cause major social, economic and public health problems. Various treatments are available, and self-help groups can provide ongoing support for people recovering from alcoholism. Source - Mayo Clinic
The Judge's sentence was Matt's second strike but it might also save his life. As for Jeanna, perhaps her life is the most "real" of the Real Housewives, her recent success grounded by the sobering reality of Matt's struggle with alcohol, their problems, too taboo for even the "reality" of Real Housewives.

Real Housewives of OC: The Mysterious Lou

OC Energy Angels

Lou, we hardly knew ye...

It's the third season of the Bravo TV Reality series, Real Housewives of Orange County.

We've come to follow the lives of Jeanna, Vicki, Lauri, Tammy, and the newest 'Housewife' additions, Tamra and Quinn.

The series opened with the news of the death of Tammy's ex, 67-year-old Lou. A peripheral character who managed to be on the show with a new product line, OC Energy Drink.

Part of the back story on Real Wives about Tammy and her two daughters with Lou was how they were used to an extra 'extra' lavish lifestyle until Tammy's then "older" husband Lou filed for bankruptcy.

Flash forward: Tammy is divorced from Lou and dealing with living with less income and a simpler lifestyle. Tammy's two daughters are dealing with the fact that their father left them with no will and no inheritance, that he "promised" he'd always "take care of them."

Tammy had a long term relationship and son with Duff after her split with Lou. The second season focused on Duff's attempt to rekindle something with Tammy. It also saw Lou come into the show via his new "business," OC Energy Drink, and his relationship with his two daughters with Tammy, Megan and Lindsey.

His schtick: hire the lovely daughters of the OC ladies to "advertise" the drink as "OC Angels." Sort of "live" product placement in a show that worked quite well.

From OC Energy Drink:
Only a few select Women have been chosen to represent the company as “The OC Angels”. The product and our OC Angels receive Global brand recognition, through “The Real Housewives of Orange County”; a syndicated TV show on the Bravo network, which airs in over 114 countries around the world.
The viewers of Real Housewives were only privy to Lou's scheme of having the Real Housewives' daughters be the product's model/bikini wearing spokesgirls. Tammy and Lou's daughter Lindsey, Lauri's daughter, Ashley, Vicki's daughter, Briana, and Jeanna's daughter, Kara were spokesgirls/models at the OC Energy drinks official introduction.

Lou's marketing strategy paid off:

From RG Global Lifestyles:
Glaser noted, “Launched in July of 2006, OC Energy is really starting to take off, and our new high speed production line provides the capacity to meet our current and projected needs well into the future. The exposure OC Energy received on Bravo TV’s ‘Real Housewives of Orange County’ hit reality show this past season sparked a surge in demand for our product. With the show now in syndication internationally, we expect an exponential increase in the exposure to consumers worldwide, further increasing demand for OC Energy beverages. Additionally, we believe our ‘OC Angels’ spokeswomen who have been featured on ‘Real Housewives’ will play a key role in generating increased exposure and demand for our products through a variety of multi-media projects.”
Lou was the Chairman and CEO of OC Energy and RG Global Life Styles.

The Real Wives show gave a brief glimpse into Tammy and Lou's former lavish lifestyle when Tammy and Lindsey stood at the gate and gazed up the long driveway at their former home. Tammy mentioned something about a bankruptcy and divorce.

We decided to find out what Tammy was referring to, her former 'fairytale' life with ex-Lou.

From Answers.com:
1985: Louis and Tammy Knickerbocker found International Beauty Supply.
1991: The company begins to sell Marie Osmond Fine Porcelain Dolls via the QVC television shopping network.
1995: The firm, now known as L.L. Knickerbocker, goes public on NASDAQ.
1996: Jewelry companies are acquired.
1999: The firm is forced into bankruptcy by creditors.
In January 1995, Louis Knickerbocker's various businesses were merged into a single entity, the Rancho Santa Margarita, California-based L.L. Knickerbocker Company.

Between 1995 and 1998 the company grew by leaps and bounds. The company developed new products and its best seller was the Marie Osmond Doll. They announced plans to offer the 50's show, "The Honeymooners" memorabilia, hair and skin product lines, a stolen item tracker service, a Richard Simmons line of collectibles, and other joint ventures.

By 1997 the company entered into a joint venture in Asia to sell alternative fuels but also began to encounter problems with the Federal Trade Commission and the FDA. The company also reported a loss of 4.4 million on 68.3 million for the year.

In 1998 the company reported 60 million in revenue with a loss of 28 million. In 1999 company stock was delisted by NASDAQ due to "low trading." The company filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy but was allowed by the courts to convert to Chapter 11 reorganization. It reported revenues of 42.2 million and net loss of 3.4 million.

In July 2001, L.L. Knickerbocker accepted an offer of $6 million from Brian Blosil, the husband of Marie Osmond, to buy substantially all of its assets, which would form the basis of a newly formed company called Marian, LLC. Louis Knickerbocker subsequently filed a plan of liquidation with the bankruptcy court for the minimal remaining assets he held. The firm's founder later reappeared with a company called RG Global Lifestyles, Inc., that marketed dietary supplements and health and beauty aid products in Asia, as well as a device that created drinking water from air.
According to Wiki, Tammy divorced Lou after his affair with an assistant and the bankruptcy. Tammy and Lou lived in one of the larger "estates" in the OC community known as "Coto."

Forty-four-year-old Tammy now works as a loan officer and is a single mom raising her son with her ex-boyfriend, Duff and daughters, Megan and Lindsey from her marriage with Lou.

Tammy has started a new website, Veriya, where she has her "Tammy's Living Book" and one can read the "cheating letters" from the now-dead Lou.
Next month, Veriya will be accepting subscriptions to exclusive coverage such as Tammy's living book in a biography video format. See her family video's, the cheating letters she found from her former husband and more!
Tammy describes Veriya as an online "lifestyle and entertainment" magazine.

Tammy's time on the Real Housewives show this season is spent coping with daughter Megan's propensity to get another tattoo whenever the urge strikes, with both daughter's lack of drive, something they didn't seem to inherent from their whirlwind entrepreneur father, Lou. Tammy's new boyfriend on the show has his face blurred out to protect his identity, Duff hasn't been seen and Lou is dead.

Life, as they know it, goes on in OC.

Real Housewives of Orange County: Dysfunctional Like the Rest of Us

Image [tcvillas.com]

Into its 3rd season, the hit Bravo reality TV show, The Real Housewives of Orange County, has given us a glimpse into the lifestyles and mini-dramas of a Southern California gated community.

We’ve been following the “lives” of four “housewives”: Vicki, the driven to succeed Midwest transplant, Lauri, the elegant blonde bombshell engaged to George, the handsome millionaire. Tammy, the once married to a super-rich older man who filed for massive bankruptcy, and Jeana, former Playboy bunny, actress, now successful realtor, separated from her long time husband and ex-major league pitcher, Matt Keough.

In three seasons we’ve watched what the producers wanted us to know. The “real” lives lived in beautiful houses in the super-beautiful community of “Coto”.

We’ve followed the lives of Lauri, Jeana, Vicki, and Tammy along with their family members: kids, spouses, boyfriends, ex’s, decorators, and neighborhood “extras.” We’ve been privy to the nip and tucks, botox, boob jobs, hair dyes and the women’s bratty and not so bratty kids as they grew up before our very eyes.

Jo, the youngest “housewife” has moved on to LA; a new reality show in the works, her ex-older boyfriend, Slade, still “clinging” to her. When Jo and Slade “broke up” we thought we spied a tiny bit of spine in Slade when he grabbed a screwdriver and removed the license plate from Jo’s (leased) Mercedes. (A gift from him)

We watched Lauri work for Vicki and wondered how Lauri could stand having to spend so much time with the workaholic control freak Vicki without resorting to murder. We cheered Lauri when she met George, the successful down-to-earth developer. We were happy when Lauri moved in with George and then became engaged. We wondered why Lauri’s son, in and out of trouble, moved in with George’s ex-wife.

We followed Tammy and her two daughters as they learned how to readjust to living a “meager” lifestyle after Tammy divorced Lou, the much older husband. Lou knew how to get on the show by recruiting his, Lauri’s, and Vicki’s daughter to become the “spokesgirls” for his new bottled water drink. Unfortunately for Lou he dropped dead of a massive heart attack. Now Tammy is helping her daughters cope with the fact that their father “broke his promise” that "they’d never have to work for anything."

What a bastard to drop dead before making sure his kids were set for life.

Then there’s Vicki. Vicki is not the best looking but she is the most fascinating of the “wives.”

We’ve watched Vicki’s drive to succeed and by all accounts she's quite successful. We watched the bombastic workaholic bounce through life and wonder why her husband is so sarcastic and cutting to her. In Vicki’s favor she gives as good as she gets.

Last season she went on a “surprise” visit to see her son during his first semester of college in Colorado. You see his mortification when she showed off her set of boobs to his friends. At least she kept her shirt on. We cringed when she behaved as if she was the same age as her son. We felt immense pity for that kid and a little for Vicki, when, rebuffed by her son, she hid sobbing behind his shower curtain.

And then there’s Jeanna. For three seasons we’ve watched Jeanna in her real estate career, raising her three kids with ex-pro pitcher, Matt Keough.

The kids grew up. The oldest, surly, cocky, and unsure, is now busy establishing his own career in the major leagues and beginning to mellow.

A beautiful and grounded daughter who graduated from high school this year and decided to attend Berkeley. A daughter who hated to see her friends’ drink or smoke and was very adamant about it.

Jeanna’s youngest, her 14-year-old son, a cute kid already in sports, busy being precocious.

And then there’s Matt, Jeanna’s husband and father to the 3 kids.

Every now and then we’d see Matt around the house. We came to know Matt as “surly” and “sour" and mostly unseen. Jeanna mentioned when he was absent that he was away “coaching” or in Vegas.

This season Jeanna separated from Matt. Viewers knew Jeanna and Matt’s marriage was strained. What viewers didn’t see was Matt locked in his own battle, against the bottle, a fight to stay sober.

Matt is being currently held in the Orange County Jail without bail. The fifty-two-year-old was arrested December 18th after he had spent several days “binge” drinking at a local hotel.

Matt violated his probation from a 2005 DUI conviction. Just days before Matt’s arrest at the hotel he had been released from the Newport Beach City Jail where he had been incarcerated for 7 weeks. A probation officer caught Matt drinking at his home, a violation that put Matt in jail.

Matt tried the Betty Ford Clinic and a court ordered 3-month stint at an outpatient program.

We never got a glimpse of this, of Matt’s drinking, or how it affected his family. Or did we?

There was their daughter’s anger over “drinking.” Every now and then we’d hear a comment from the kids about their father.

A huge undertaking, to pretend your life is okay, while a member of your family is in the grips of a problem like Matt’s alcoholism. While cameras follow you around in your “perfect” life, in the “perfect” world of “Coto.”

Matt’s next hearing is on January 14th. Matt could face up to five years in prison.

Real Housewives of Orange County: The Side You Never See

The Reality series, The Real Housewives of Orange County, follows the upscale lives of several women who live in the swank community of Coto de Caza, California.

In its third season the cast is minus a character, the husband of Jeana. Matt Keough was rarely around the large square foot mini-manse while Jeana coped with raising two sons and a daughter along with a very successful career in real estate.

Keough was usually "away." At times it was mentioned that the ex-major league pitcher was in "Vegas" or coaching. The new season had Jeana learning how to be single again after a long marriage to Matt. As for Matt, no mention of where he had gone but then again when he was there, he always made himself scarce after scowling at everyone.

Keough was arraigned for a violation of parole stemming from a 2005 DUI hit and run conviction. For more info check out the OC Register.

Evidently this wasn't Keough's first brush with the law as Keough's arrest and arraignment happened shortly after he had spent 7 weeks in the Newport Beach City Jail.

No mention was made on the show of an incident in 2005 of a family fight and DUI crash involving Keough. Whenever Keough was featured on the show he was usually shown stalking off to another room. Viewers wondered how Jeana could stand her marriage. Keough also spent time at the Betty Ford Clinic and Sober Living.

We're not sure why the producers of the hit reality show decided to exclude this information about Jeana's husband. It may have been out of some respect for Jeana and her family's privacy or it may have been a decision that a drinking problem was too much a "bummer" for the show's ambiance.

Keough is in OC jail without bail. His family has asked the media to leave the family alone.

Jeana's and Matt's troubles showed there is a grittier and more dysfunctional side to Real Housewives. That perhaps, no matter how much glitz, Jeana and the other Housewives are just as real as the rest of us.
