42 Foot Snowman Missing, $1000 Reward Offered

Dec. 4, 2007, 2:28PM
All units be on the lookout for a snowman.
Subject is described as 42 foot tall.
Wears red hat, scarf, smokes pipe.
Subject was last seen at Dixon Farms and
answers to the name of "Frosty."

TYLER — "Frosty" the snowman has been swiped.

The 42-foot-tall inflatable holiday decoration is missing from a tree farm in Tyler.

Officials at Dixon Farms say Frosty, worth about $10,000, was last seen Friday night.

So far no arrests.

Lot owner Royce Wisenbaker believes Frosty was hoisted over a fence.

A $1,000 reward has been posted for the safe return of the towering decoration.

Frosty is described as a white male, sporting a red hat and scarf, with a pipe in his mouth.

Hopefully Frosty hasn't suffered the same fate as other snowmen who mistakenly headed south.

Baby Grace, Riley Sawyers: Couple Arrested

BREAKING BABY GRACE NEWS:

Authorities have moved in the Baby Grace case.

Couple Charged in Case of Missing Child Who May Be 'Baby Grace'

Galveston County authorities have arrested a couple in the case of a missing child who may be "Baby Grace," the toddler whose body washed ashore in a storage bin in Galveston Bay last month.

Authorities are awaiting DNA test results but have tentatively identified the girl as 2-year-old Riley Ann Sawyers of Spring, said Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo of the Galveston County Sheriff's Department.

The girl's mother, Kimberly Dawn Trenor, 19, and Royce Clyde Zeigler II, 24, reportedly told relatives that she was taken in July by someone claiming to be an Ohio social worker. But they never told police she was missing, Tuttoilmondo said.

After police searched their home, they were arrested early Saturday and charged with injury to a child and tampering with evidence, Tuttoilmondo said. The couple remain jailed on bonds of $350,000 each. It's unclear if they are married, Tuttoilmondo said.

Tuttoilmondo declined to say what was found in the home, about 200 miles south of Dallas, or what the couple may have said about Riley's disappearance.

The police have been onto the couple for awhile, but were remaining silent.
More from CNN: Police identify girl found dead in box; arrest mom and stepfather
The arrests followed searches conducted Saturday after a November 7 tip, the sheriff's department said.

Deputies and FBI agents plan to release more information at a news conference Monday, Galveston County Sheriff's Maj. Ray Tuttoilmondo said.

At the time Tutttilmondo stated: " "She is more to us than just a case number, more to us than just an unidentified body. She is very much a human being," Tutoilmondo said last month. "She is someone's child, someone's grandchild, someone's cousin, someone's best friend, and to us, that is the most important part about this case."

"We have adopted the name of Baby Grace because, there again, that is part of the emotional part of this case for us," he said, holding a tiny sneaker identical to one of those the child was wearing when she was found."

Finally the authorities have moved in this case. Perhaps questions can now begin to be answered in the Riley Sawyers disappearance and the Baby Grace case. Maybe they are one and the same, maybe not.

In either case, we applaud the actions of the authorities.

Baby Grace, Riley Sawyers: Ohio Girl Possible Match

Could this be Baby Grace?

Authorities are looking into the possible connection between the Baby Grace case and two-year-old Riley Sawyers of Mentor, Ohio.

Riley Ann Sawyers and her mother, Kim, moved from Mentor, Ohio to Katy, Texas last summer. Galveston Bay, where the body of Baby Grace was discovered by a fisherman on October 29, is approximately 77 miles east of Katy.Riley's grandmother, Sheryl Sawyers, says Kim moved to Texas after she met a man on the internet.

Kim and Riley had been living with Sawyers, who is the mother of Riley's father Robert, for the past two-years.

Sherly and Robert have had no contact from Kim since she moved to Texas and they have been going through the legal process in both Texas and Ohio to try and get visitation rights to see Riley.
Riley is no longer with her mother who claims "someone from Ohio, with papers demanding custody" took Riley. Ohio officials refute this claim.

Police ruled out a tip leading to Spring, Tx today.

Was the Spring girl, Riley Sawyers? We don't know. Katy is 48 miles south of Spring, Tx.

Police released no information on why the tip was ruled a dead end.

The story of Riley's mother seems, at first glance, to have several questions attached to it.

Another question is what mother gives her daughter to "someone from Ohio" without knowing the whos, whats and whys of the person taking her offspring?

In coordination with the Mentor police and the FBI, Riley's father, Robert has submitted a DNA sample.

No word yet on how long the DNA testing will take or if the FBI will disclose the results.

Our hearts go out to Riley, her father Robert, and her grandmother, Sherly.

Ron Paul: Cure For BlogWriter's Block

The Latest Ron Paul story

Ron Paul's results in the Texas straw poll only prove one thing. Whether you adore or loathe him, Ron Paul is the cure for blog writer's block. Commentators on both sides of the Ron Paul question jump into the saddle to adorn every story with their own spin.

For example: The Hill's David Hill reports that there's trouble back home for Ron Paul.
While Texan Ron Paul’s stock is soaring nationally, there is trouble on the home front. In September, Paul finished third in a straw poll of 1,300 Texas Republican activists who had been delegates to recent Republican conventions.

The congressman corralled just 17 percent of the votes cast, trailing California’s Duncan Hunter with 41 percent.
Hill's reaction is that these numbers are too high. That Texans are more concerned with making a statement or following a leader than they are about whether Paul can actually win the election.
This outcome says Texas Republicans aren’t terribly concerned about viability. Otherwise, one of the national front-runners like Rudy Giuliani or Mitt Romney would have beaten these long-shots. But if they were willing to “waste” their votes on Hunter, why didn’t most back a fellow Texan? The truth is that Ron Paul, the angry prophet, has little honor in his own land. He’s about to lose his congressional seat.
This interesting article details the history of Ron Paul's elections in both Texas and nationally.

It also touches on the anxiety felt at the national level by some Republican leaders about Paul.

David Freddoso at the NRO's The Corner disagrees with Hill's assessment. In Ron Paul's Trouble at Home? his rebuttal consists of three points, including this observation about the straw poll's results.
Hill's other piece of evidence is a September straw poll in Dallas (six hours from Paul's district), which Duncan Hunter won with 41 percent. None of the major candidates participated in the poll, partly because it was limited to current and former party convention delegates and alternates. Paul, despite being in his home state, received only only 17 percent of the votes cast. Paul did not do as well as he'd hoped, but how this is representative of anything that's going on in Paul's district — or anywhere — is completely beyond me.
Still another look at the news is Spree's at Wake Up America. She says, "Ron Paul, the angry prophet, has little honor in his own land".

She points out that the story is about the 2008 Congressional elections and ends by warning off any possible comment hijackers who try turning the discussion to the 2008 presidential election.

Ah, the name of Ron Paul sparks debate throughout the blogosphere. Whether he's running for president or Congress, the Texas Congressman is most probably the most polarizing figure on the national political scene today outside of Hillary Clinton.

Among those who have heard of both Paul and Clinton, Paul may have the edge.

Thank goodness for Ron Paul.

He is the savior for blogosphere writers looking for material about an election that is almost still a year away.

Without him, there'd be a lot less to write about.

Deep Fried Turkey Recipe, Texas Style

My mouth is watering already. If you haven't had a chance to savor deep fried turkey here is a terrific recipe.

Texas Monthly
Featured in the November 1998 issue of Texas Monthly
Texas Deep-Fried Turkey

“I used to hate turkey because it’s always so dry,” says Grady Spears. But four years ago, the thirty-year-old chef had a change of heart: “That year we had Thanksgiving with True Redd, this artist who has a house on Caddo Lake, in East Texas. Everybody brought a dish, and True deep-fried a turkey. It was so moist that I just loved it.”

Equipment
1 turkey cooker with a propane burner (also called a catfish cooker or crawfish boiler)
1 36- to 40-quart stockpot and basket
1 large turkey injector with needle
1 deep-fryer thermometer or candy thermometer
elbow-length oven mitts

Cinnamon-Chile Rub
1/2 cup cinnamon
1/2 cup pasilla or other red chile powder
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup kosher salt

Combine all ingredients and mix well.

Turkey
4 to 6 gallons peanut oil (depending on size of stockpot and turkey)
3 1/2 cups chicken stock (two 14.5-ounce cans)
1/2 cup Tabasco sauce
1 turkey, 12 to 15 pounds (inside removed)
2 cups cinnamon-chile rub (recipe above)

Place the peanut oil in the stockpot on the turkey cooker and preheat to 350 degrees. Meanwhile, in a bowl combine the chicken stock and Tabasco. Place the turkey in a shallow pan or bowl. Fill the syringe with stock mixture, inject all parts of the turkey (legs, breast, thighs), and then thoroughly coat the outside of the turkey with the cinnamon-chile rub. When the oil reaches 350 degrees, place the turkey in the basket and, wearing oven mitts, carefully lower it into the stockpot. Cook for 3‡ minutes per pound (for example, a 12-pound turkey will be done in 42 minutes). Remove the turkey from the oil and drain well. Place it on your favorite platter and carve away.

Wet Noodle Posse
Texas Deep-Fried Turkey
(Most of you are thinking “Huh?” but trust me. Fried turkey is to die for and faster to cook than roasted or smoked turkey.)

1 (10- to 12-pound) turkey
2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
2 teaspoons pepper, or to taste
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
4-5 gallons peanut oil

Rinse and dry turkey after removing innards from both ends. Generously season inside of cavity with spices. Heat oil to 350-375 degrees in an outdoor deep fryer. When oil is at the right temperature, use a strong twine or rope sling to lower the turkey into the fryer. (Wear goggles; this puppy may splatter.) Cook about five minutes per pound or until meat thermometer reaches 180 degrees.

For wild turkey, cook only four minutes per pound.

D’Agostino’s Supermarkets
Texas Deep-Fried Turkey

Our neighbors in Louisiana get the credit for Cajun-fried turkey, but Texans have embraced this cooking method as if it had come from deep in the heart. All the ingredients are there to make a Texan love it: The cooking is done outdoors, it requires special equipment, the turkey cooks fast, and it is fried.

Actually, anything as big as a turkey doesn’t exactly fry when immersed in hot oil; it boils. But the end result is a moist, tender bird with a golden skin. Done correctly, it is not greasy.

Like the smoked turkey, there are plenty of places to buy a Cajun-fried turkey in most major cities. Catfish restaurants particularly like to fry whole turkeys as a holiday sideline. But if you want to try it yourself, here’s how.
You’ll need an outdoor cooker, usually gas powered, with a cooking pot large enough to hold 4 or 5 gallons of peanut oil and a turkey. Catalogs for outdoor equipment as well as hardware and camping stores often carry turkey-frying kits, priced about $50. They are worth the investment because they include lifters to make removing the turkey easier and safer.

There are also injector kits with syringes to shoot marinade into the turkey meat before frying. Otherwise, ample seasoning with salt and pepper, perhaps some cayenne, inside the turkey will do nicely.

This is a particularly good technique for wild turkey, because it keeps the lean meat very moist. As always with wild game, avoid overcooking. And don’t let the scrawny appearance of the wild bird next to that plump domestic darling bother you. It doesn’t look like a textbook turkey, but it tastes great. Snakes on a Plane?
Snakes in a Bathtub Earns Texas
Man Guinness World Record

Some people, when confronted with the problem of having too much time on their hands take up bridge. Or build birdhouses.

Or sit in a bathtub filled with 87 rattlesnakes.

One such fellow, "The Texas Snake Man" as he's known, etched his name in the Guinness Book of World Records by lounging around with 87 of his best reptilian friends. More from the Snake Paper of Record, the Houston Chronicle:
Another day, another bizarre world record for Jackie Bibby, "The Texas Snake Man."

Bibby spent about 45 minutes in a see-through bathtub with 87 rattlesnakes Monday, shattering his own record by 12 snakes just in time for Guinness World Records Day, which is Thursday. The record was certified by a Guinness official.

Bibby said the snakes crawled under his arms, between his legs and anywhere else they could slither. None of the snakes bit him.

"They can go wherever they want as long as they don't start biting," Bibby said. "The key to not biting is for me to stay still. Rapid movement scares a rattlesnake. If you move real slow and gentle, that doesn't seem to bother them."

Bibby sat in the dry tub with a pillow propped behind him to make him more comfortable. He wore regular clothing, and the snakes were not defanged and still contained their venom, he said. Workers placed the snakes in one at a time and removed them one at a time.

The clear bathtub was specially made several years ago for Bibby by the Guinness folks for a televised segment. He's used the tub for subsequent attempts at the record for sitting in a tub with snakes.
Jack Bibby is a man with a plan. His plan is to set some more world records.

And he has just the bathtub to do it.

"I have set several world records in that bathtub," Bibby said.

The record was Bibby's latest grab at glory. Last year he set a Guinness-certified record by holding 10 rattlesnakes by their tails in his mouth at once. He said he plans to break that record Tuesday by squeezing in an 11th.
I would write more, but I just had the sudden urge to brush my teeth.
