Floggings in Iran [pictures]

When Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited New York City last month, he gave a speech at Columbia University. Columbia's president, Lee Bollinger, introduced Ahmadinejad with some blunt questions. Some people took umbrage. Such as Kate Carter.

Carter, posting at Divine Caroline, asked the question "The Flogging of Iran’s President: Appropriate or Rude?"

Columbia University President, Lee Bollinger, invited Iran’s President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to speak at his university. When introducing Ahmadinejad, Bollinger said he exhibits “all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator,” and called him “either brazenly provocative or astonishingly uneducated.”

In my opinion, there is something unseemly about a university president denouncing his guest in an academic setting.

Here's a visual look at some actual flogging in Ahmadinejad's Iran. Given his preference, Ahmadinejad would surely have chosen the figurative flogging at Columbia over the real deal back home. This post could have included other visual examples: there's dozens more pictures like these floating around the Internet.

The Left is always so retro.

One of the fashionable trends since the beginning of the War in Iraq is the return of the use of the word "fascist" by Leftie writers. The popular and never-ending themes over there are: Bush and the United States are fascist, in the process of becoming fascist or the fascist coup is coming.

On any given day, the Left Blogosphere is full of fantasies and ravings of this topic. "Prison State", "Bush Fascism" and similar products of delusion are on display daily. If not Bush or the U.S., it's those evil Christians.

Here's a little look at a country those same Leftist bloggers might consider emigrating to, if they had any balls, anti-fascist or otherwise. From Iran Focus:

London, Oct. 14 - A Christian couple were flogged in Iran for participating in an “underground Church”, an Iranian Christian group said in a report on its website earlier this week.

The unnamed couple were arrested on September 21, 2005, the report said, adding that a Revolutionary Court reviewed their case in July 2007.

Even though the couple had decided to marry seven years ago, the country’s marriage laws - which prohibit the union of ex-Muslims and members of other religious minorities – prevented them from obtaining a certificate of marriage.The court ruled that both the man and the woman were Mortad, a description of someone who has committed apostasy by leaving Islam.

So this didn't occur in New Jersey? Evil Christian fascists didn't flog anyone in Berkeley? When reading this story, it triggered memories of an email I had read earlier. From part of a email sent to the proprietor Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs over the weekend:

You are a fascist retarded knuckledragger just like Nam Grunt or Iron Fist. You always crap on the MSM, as if you or any of your lazy, ignorant pyjama wearing right wing fascist assholes are out in the field reporting.

Two sentences, two references to "fascist". 'Fascist' is mentally-stunted shorthand for "I don't agree with you".

Google the term 'Bush+fascism' and over 2.3 million entries are listed. "The United States is Fascist" is a cute bumper sticker, if you live in San Fransisco. The pictures at this story's beginning however, reminds one what real fascism, real repression, look like.
