Barack Obama: New 44th President Will Face Real Challenges, Responsibilities

Your Ad Here

Barack Obama:
44th President of the United States

New President Will Find Responsibilities Replace Rhetoric

Electoral Win Solid, if Not Spectacular

Barack Obama was elected in Election 2008 as the USA's 44th president and almost immediately will face hard choices in governing, both on the domestic and foreign fronts.

The media has called Obama's election "historic", and on that--unlike most other matters of fact--they are correct.

Obama becomes the country's first bi-racial candidate, and even those that opposed Obama on policy issues can find much good in the hope that his election will put issues of race into their proper perspective.

The raw statistics surrounding the election of Barack Hussein Obama as the nation's 44th president indicate that the country gave a Democrat presidential candidate a majority of the popular vote for the first time in 32 years.

Obama's 52.4% of the popular vote surpasses Jimmy Carter's 50.1% total in 1976 election. That total could finish up or down, but not by much. Obama's total was far short of predictions that he would approach Lyndon Johnson's 1964 total of 61.1%.

The electoral college total had Obama winning 364-174 over challenger John McCain.

Bill Clinton exceeded both totals in the electoral college--in spite of never winning a majority of the popular vote--in both 1992(370) and 1996 (379). Obama did surpass Carter's 297.

Obama will be tested immediately, it seems on foreign policy.

Russia reacted to the news of Obama's election within hours. From Russian missiles to counter U.S. defence plan: Medvedev.

Russia will deploy short-range missiles in the Baltic Sea region near the border with Poland in response to plans by the United States to build an anti-missile system in Europe, President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday.

The proposed U.S. anti-missile system, which would include 10 missile silos in Poland and a radar station in the Czech Republic to help detect and shoot down any ballistic missiles, threatens Russia's national security, Medvedev said in his state-of-the-nation address on Wednesday.

"To neutralize — if necessary — the [U.S.] anti-missile system, an Iskander missile system will be deployed in the Kaliningrad region," Medvedev said. "Naturally, we are also considering using for the same purpose the resources of Russia's navy."

There will be the traditional 'honeymoon' between the new Obama administration and the press. DBKP is no different: we wish the new president well for the sake of the United States.

We'll reserve comment on the press' relationship with the Obama campaign before the election for another post.

Obama's campaign mantra of "hope" affects even us: we hope that what we don't know about the Senator from Illinois won't affect his good judgment for the good of the country. We also hope that the Obama we see in White House really the go-slow, tax-cutting Obama we saw in the last weeks of the campaign.

Obama's campaign mantra of "hope" affects even us: we hope that what we don't know about the Senator from Illinois won't affect his good judgment for the good of the country.

Republicans in Congress continued to pay a price for their free-spending, pork-barreling ways when they had control. We hope they learned a lesson, though we are a bit skeptical.

Barack Obama is a smart man. We hope he uses his intelligence to study the effects of what happens--to Democrats and Republicans alike--when they try to buy votes using the hard-earned money of their fellow citizens.

We Barack Obama a hearty "Good luck".

Weekend Box Office Leaders: June 13-15, 2008

The latest movie adaptation of Marvel Comic's The Incredible Hulk finished where the comic book character usually end up: on top.

Judged against Spider-Man, Hulk came up short. Judged against Hulk, The Incredible Hulk came up big. The franchise restart, starring Edward Norton, topped the weekend box office with $54.5 million, according to Exhibitor Relations estimates today. While that's about $8 million less than what Ang Lee's Hulk opened with in 2003, the gross is considered a victory for Universal Pictures, which had to overcome, well, Ang Lee's Hulk

The Hulk accounted for about a third of all ticket sales over the weekend.

#2 - Kung Fu Panda $34.3 million

#3 The Happening 30.5 million

#4 Don't Mess with the Zohan 16.4 million

The rest of the Top Ten:

5. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $13.5 million
6. Sex and the City, $10.2 million
7. Iron Man, $5.1 million
8. The Strangers, $4.1 million
9. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, $3 million
10. What Happens in Vegas, $1.7 million

The total movie box office receipts for 2008 are almost equal to this same time last year.

Obama Speech: The Wright Stuff?

We shall see if Obama's speech on March 18 had the desired effect. The results won't be clear for days, at best, but from what I have seen and heard so far, much of the speech itself, plus TV commentary, it was too little, too late.

Gloria Borger expressed the opinion yesterday that for the speech to be effective, Obama had to talk directly to the voters at a real world level and, for a change, not address worshipful devotees, from the stratosphere There was some earthiness in Obama's address, but it was pretty much true to form, poetic and rhapsodic and rhetorical. Personally, I could muster some sympathy, but it was not convincing.

What would be convincing ?

A black political expert featured on Fox TV may provide the best answer. Sorry I can't report his name, but he is very astute and realistic, a "pol" who knows his stuff. He also is a Democrat sympathetic to Obama --and he wasn't convinced, either.

What it would take is for Obama to meet with Rev Wright, behind closed doors , and when the get together was over for Wright to emerge with the message that he , the pastor, regretted his controversial views, had experienced a change of heart, and now seeks to not only undo damages he has caused , but has determined to turn a new leaf and henceforth preach a message that, in effect, reflects the outlook of MLK. And this would need to be done, added a women news anchor, in such a way that it could only be seen as sincere and not cynical opportunism.

What are the chances of this ? For the immediate future, slim to none. Apparently the pastor has been located in Africa, and at the least is nowhere to be found. But even if he could be contacted in the next day or two, he has now been so publicly vilified that in all probability he is in no mood for anything but defensiveness.

Down the road may be another matter. And with the Pennsylvania primary still 5 weeks away, Obama has some time, maybe enough time, to "stop the bleeding." But the more time that elapses, the worse his predicament becomes. His poll numbers have begun to fall and Hillary's lead in Pennsylvania,as of this AM, has increased from 6% to 12%.
Not that we can trust Gallup with our life, and other polls have been less than trustworthy this year, but here is one indication that major damages loom ahead for Obama. Rasmusson is the first tracking poll to show nationwide effects from the "pastorgate" mess, Obama down 5 points in 3 days.

The speech may have the effect to applying a tourniquet to a serious wound, maybe those numbers will stabilize, but clearly the speech was not enough. The best that can be said is that it gave some measure of reassurance to Obama's most ardent supporters who, because of it, still have a "reason for faith." The problem concerns his "soft support, " people who like him and like the idea of voting for him, but who are realists, not "true believers." How large their numbers are in Obama's "camp" I cannot say, but surely a substantial part of the ensemble, and maybe a majority. These are the people who could "peel away" in the days and weeks ahead.

What are the goals of Obama's strategists?

Ron Paul: Will Stay in Race; Help "Ron Paul Republicans"

Ron Paul News Roundup

Ron Paul "Hotties" Calendar Sold Out
Paul to Stay in Race
The Rise of "Ron Paul Republicans"?

The big news this morning is that Ron Paul has announced that he will stay in the Republican presidential race.

And that the "Hotties 4 Ron Paul" calendars are sold out--and there won't be any more printed.

Also, that more candidates are running under the "Ron Paul Republican" banner--one just announced in Michigan.

Click on Krista to enlarge this month's Featured Ron Paul Hottie

Repeating what he'd insisted: that Ron Paul will stay in the race.
"I will stay in as long as my supporters want me to," the Texas congressman said on American Morning Wednesday. "I was very reluctant to enter the race, didn't think it would last more than a month or two, but to my amazement, we literally got hundreds of thousands of supporters and millions of dollars, and they are still very enthusiastic. And I say as long as the number of volunteers continues to grow, and the money comes in, and there are primaries out there, and they want me to be involved, I am going to stay involved."

Paul won 5 percent of the vote in Wisconsin and 7 percent in Washington State in yesterday's Republican primaries. He said he believes his unlikely run has attracted others of similar political leanings who want to run for Congress.

One such person is Linda Goldthorpe of Michigan. She announced plans to run as a "Ron Paul Republican".
Linda Goldthorpe of Curtis in the Upper Peninsula plans to run in the Republican primary against state Rep. Tom Casperson and conservative Don Hooper, and if she prevails will run as a “Ron Paul Republican” against seven-term Democratic Congressman Bart Stupak.

An outspoken disciple of Ron Paul, Goldthorpe says she has called herself a “pro-life Libertarian” for years.

Libertarians were an important part of the Reagan Republican coalition in the 1980s, but with the election of George Bush and the rise of "compassionate conservatism"--politicalspeak for more big government spending--libertarian concerns of smaller government and less government intrusion seem to have been pushed to the back of the Republican national agenda.

Now, more Americans with Libertarian principles are trying to make the issue of smaller government more important to the national GOP poobahs.
"One of my problems now is that I am being overwhelmed with individuals who want to [run] and I have the responsibility of sorting it out because we are capable of raising funds," he said. "So it is a responsibly that will be a significant one for me to make sure I help the candidates that are true believes and not just the ones who want to be in Congress."

A Ron Paul Republican would most likely be Libertarian in outlook: i.e., adamant about scaling back the power of a U.S. federal government that has reached into almost every facet of individual life in modern-day America.

Paul had previously announced this month that he was scaling back his presidential run to focus on his Texas district and the re-election race he faces there.

Paul is facing a challenge that any Congressman running for President must face: opponents who use the time spent away from the congressional district as a talking point.

Congressional opponents are using Paul's presidential run as an issue: it's being said that Ron Paul is more concerned with running for President than he is his local constituents.

So, Ron Paul is putting more time into meeting and greeting the folks back home in his Texas district. And in helping organize like-minded individuals who are running for office across the country.

Paul, who won 5 percent of the vote in Wisconsin and 7 percent in Washington State, also said he believes his unlikely candidacy has attracted like-minded individuals who want to run for Congress.

Paul also categorically ruled out a third party bid in the future.

As far as attractive women and Ron Paul, there will be no more "Hotties 4 Ron Paul" calendars reprinted.

The website for "Hotties for Ron Paul" says the calendar is sold out.

The site apologizes for everyone coming to the site to get a calendar. The website statement: "The Hotties4RonPaul Calendar has sold out! We apologize to all the Ron Paul supporters out there who came here looking to get a calendar!"

Concerning a reprint of the obviously-popular wall hanging which the site says "rated G, contains no nudity, and is safe for the workplace," the question is answered in the site's FAQ.

You have sold out of calendars, will you be printing more?
No, at this time we are not planning on printing any more calendars.
Iconoclast Republican Ron Paul attracts unconventional support for his presidential campaign, including a 2008 pinup calendar by Hotties for Ron Paul, an independent fund-raiser not affiliated with the campaign. The calendar features 12 scantily clad young women (no nudity). February's "Featured Hottie" is Krista Allee DiPaola, identified as a Detroit special education teacher.

In America, as in the rest of the world, politics and attractive women seem to be a natural combination.

Of course, leave it to an American to figure out a way to make a buck off the two.

Super Tuesday: Damn Those Voters Having Their Say Again!

Tales from the BlancaSphere

John McCain and Rudy Giuliani share a Kodak moment

Voters had their say on Tuesday, casting ballots in the millions.

Once again conventional wisdom, projections, election eve and exit polling proved to be completely wrong as those annoying voters insisted on ignoring the media, pundits, and endorsements and voted any way they damn well pleased.

Perhaps most annoying is how state after state seemed to fall for Barack Obama and John McCain. Its almost as if no one is listening to Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Dr. Dobson, Dr. Laura Slesinger, or Sean Hannity. It's as if people are tuning them out, and casting ballots according to some arcane rules of conscience.

It's down right unnerving.

Look, all of us on the right have gone to great lengths to ensure that Hillary Clinton is the nominee on the Democrat side. We have done a lot of research, digging up dirt, and are all ready to swift boat her ass come November.

As one of the voices on the right, I am on the fax speed dial for the daily talking points. I have seen what we have in store. I can't divulge anything, but let me just say it involves some drugs, an orgy, and several midgets.

[EDITORS NOTE: Midgets are always effective as a secret weapon.]

And all of my friends and gal pals have been trying awful hard to keep you from voting for John McCain. I mean I personally have called everyone I know and told them about his black baby. You know, you just can't push poll a black baby with Barack Obama. It doesn't work for some reason.

But we have dug up some fresh new trash to throw at John McCain, just in time for the next round of primaries.

For instance, did you know that John McCain crashed three planes in Vietnam? Did you also know he almost sank his own aircraft carrier? Did you know he killed 134 of our bravest American soldiers all by himself?

I bet you didn't.

Well now you do.

So here is how you can do your part. Call everyone you know in an upcoming primary state and ask them how they would feel knowing what you now know.

Here, let me give you a script.
Ring Ring.
Hello. My name is (fill in your name--or you can use a fake name if you don't want them to know who you are). I am calling from (fill in your favorite polling service, but don't use Zogby--he's ultra left). I would like to know if you would be more willing or less willing to vote for John McCain if you knew he was a secret spy for the Viet Cong. Would you also be more or less willing to vote for John McCain if you knew he sabotaged the USS Forrestal by bombing the ship? I would also like to know if you would be more or less likely to vote for John McCain if you knew he killed 134 American soldiers. And finally would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain if you knew he ran around in crotchless panties, wearing a swastika, while molesting children and killing little kittens. Thank you for you time.

OK. Get calling. We have millions of voters to reach by next week.

It's time for you to do your part.

WV GOP Convention: Naked Politics Triumphs

Classic Backroom Dealing from the Straight-Talk Express

In a Machiavellian finish, Mitt Romney got froze out of 18 delegates at the WV GOP Convention this morning when John McCain, who had very little delegate support gave his delegates to Mike Huckabee and allowed the former Arkansas governor to best Mitt Romney.

After the first round, Romney had 41%, Huckabee 33% and McCain 12%. Ron Paul had between 10 and 11%.

Romney, Huckabee and Paul had addressed the 1100-1200 delegates before the first round voting.

Romney addressed delegates before the convention and the large room was Standing Room Only.

The Ron Paul Meet-the-Candidate room was also quite full with approximately 100-150 well-wishers, autograph-seekers and delegates meeting the Texas Congressman.

The McCain room is pictured below.

It was after the first round that the back-room horse-trading began.

With no chance for victory, McCain joined forces with Huckabee and with a few uncommitted delegates committing, victory was snatched from Romney who easily had the largest single amount of delegates at the convention.

Huckabee picked up 18 delegates at the convention, held in the state capital of Charleston. The remaining 12 delegates will be awarded to the winner of the WV GOP primary on May 5.

The McCain room saw few attendees
The coffee was hot, however.

McCain was not present at the event, the only GOP presidential hopeful who did not show.

However, a McCain operative was snagged for an assessment, before the voting of how the Arizona Senator would do.

Bystander: How do you think McCain will do?

McCain Op: Great!

Bystander: No, really?

McCain Op: Great! I really think great!

Bystander (looking around the empty McCain room): No, I mean seriously. Just between you and me.

McCain Op: No, really. There's a lot of uncommitted delegates here and we've been very successful at consolidating uncommitted delegates in the last 48 hours.

The McCain campaign did do great.

If "great" is defined by hitting the 12% mark, and then bailing.

Of course, McCain's campaign kept the man who is becoming the Arizona Senator's chief rival from landing 18 delegates, so that must be considered a success.

The 18 delegates would have sent Romney into the GOP lead going into this evening's Super Tuesday wrap-up.

Convention delegates now stand at 97 for McCain, 92 for Romney, Huckabee now has 50, and Ron Paul 8.

Huckabee bested Mitt Romney, who entered the Mountain State event with the largest bloc of pledged convention-goers. Both men and Ron Paul made in-person appeals to the more than 1,100 convention delegates attending Tuesday's convention.

But the former Arkansas governor beat his Massachusetts counterpart after delegates for John McCain defected to his side.

The first round of voting at the state convention produced no winner, but eliminated Paul after his fourth-place finish.

The WV convention was the first Super Tuesday event to finish.

Ron Paul and Mitt Romney easily had the loudest delegations the event.

Both men spoke to the convention in an appeal for delegates, along with Huckabee.

So Mike Huckabee became Mike Luckabee.

About the McCain switcheroo, one delegate at the convention observed, "He doesn't believe in anything. Except maybe, John McCain. He's nothing but a politician."

More reports later will be filed later in the day.

Convention Updates: Delegate Totals; Maine Results

Republican, Democrat National Convention
UPDATED Delegate Totals
The latest figures from the Maine Caucuses.

68% of towns in Maine reporting results:
Mitt Romney -- 52% of the vote.
John McCain--- 21% of the vote.
Ron Paul ----- 19% of the vote.
Mike Huckabee- 6% of the vote.
Fred Thompson - 4% of the vote. [Thompson dropped out last month]

CNN projected that Romney will win all 18 of Maine's delegates to the Republican National Convention.

Although much of Maine saw bad weather during the voting, it wasn't a factor in suppressing voter turnout.
Despite a sleet storm the night before, which left much of the state coated with slush and ice, cars jammed the car park outside an Augusta elementary school where Kennebec County municipalities were caucusing.

Kim Pettengill, who has been a party activist for more than three decades, said it was the largest Kennebec County caucus turnout since 1980, the year Ronald Reagan won his first Republican nomination for president.

The "unstoppable" John McCain, anointed press darling of the MSM, struggled to keep his vote totals in Maine above 20%.

It seems that when presented with a choice between the MSM's (including Robert Novak on this particular issue) "unstoppable" McCain and anyone else, Republican voters are choosing "anyone else"--as 80% of Maine Republicans did.
[Romney] told CNN's "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer" on Sunday that conservative Republicans were rallying to his banner to block McCain, whose stances on tax cuts, immigration and campaign finance reform have incurred the wrath of much of the party's activist base.

"Conservative voices, both from radio and from publications, are saying, 'You know what, we've got to get behind Mitt Romney. We really can't afford John McCain as the nominee of our party,' " Romney said. "And that kind of groundswell is what led me to win in Maine yesterday."

DELEGATE TOTALS (at the moment)
[delegates OFFICIALLY pledged to each candidate] - Republicans

Delegates Needed to Win - 1191
Amount of Delegates up for grabs on Super Tuesday - 1027

[delegates OFFICIALLY pledged to each candidate] - Democrats

Barack Obama ----- 158
John Edwards ----- 26

Needed to Win - 2025

So tomorrow's voting might clear the picture a bit.

OR, it might not.

It may put off the day of decision in both parties until the later primaries, in which case it would be ironic that all the states that jumped to the front of the line in order to "make a bigger impact", will not.

It may very well be that the states that refused to bolt to the beginning of the year and kept their tradidional primary dates will be the ones which garner the MOST attention--both by the candidates and the media.

It would be fitting that the the states which didn't participate in goofy moving of their primaries will be the ones which will hold the keys to selecting the presidential nominees.

The ones that fought, like grade school kids to be first in the primary line, will be--fittingly--long forgotten by the time the national choices are made.
