Dr Phil Cancels Planned "Britney Breakdown Retrospective" Show

In a move some might consider coming to one's senses, Dr. Phil, Phil McGraw, has canceled today's previous planned "Britney Breakdown Retrospective" show.

From the DrPhil.com:
From Dr. Phil Regarding Britney Spears

"As was widely reported this weekend, at the request of concerned family members, I visited Britney Spears in the hospital. The details of that visit will, of course, remain private.

"We had planned to tape a Dr. Phil Now show today, focusing not on the tabloid side of Britney’s latest problems, but instead on the very serious issues surrounding this case. Clearly, it is not just Britney's family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help.

"Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping at this particular time.

"Britney and her family are in our prayers, and we ask that they be in yours."

Dr. Phil McGraw
"Celebrity" psychologist, Dr. Phil's bread n butter is the mass public consumption of people's pathos in his one hour talk show, Dr. Phil. The TV psychologist "works" to help solve the "underlying" issues of the "guest" in front of a studio audience and his millions of viewers.

This is a cynical look at shows such as Dr. Phil's and the private pain on parade, but on the flip-side there is a positive note.

Across the country there are those who can relate to the heartbreak of cheating spouses, parents of teens lost to drug addiction, self-esteem issues of the overweight, to the myriad of problems that we as humans face. Dr. Phil addresses them and gives practical, non-nonsense advice on how to solve them.

Back in December Dr. Phil entered the Britney Spears & Family Current Crisis when he was quoted in People:
In the December 23 issue of People, Dr. Phil commented on the "mothering" skills of Britney's mom in lieu of the news that Britney's little sister, 16-year-old Jamie Lynn was pregnant.

"We know the Spears family, particularly the parents," he tells PEOPLE at Adrienne Maloof and Dr. 90210 Phil Nassif's holiday party in Beverly Hills on Saturday. "An asset that Britney and Jamie Lynn both have is a great and dedicated mother."
From Myway on Jan 5th it was reported Dr. Phil had met with Britney in her hospital room after her latest public display of possible mental breakdown.
"My meeting with Britney and some family members this morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention," McGraw told the programs.

"She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car. I am very concerned for her," he said. Source - myway
It was further revealed Dr. Phil planned today's show with a full hour of the "serious" issues surrounding Britney Spears. We wondered just how good a friend Dr. Phil could be to Britney Spears and her family by putting together a collage of Britney's shenanigans and then discussing the "serious" underlying issues.

Dr. Phil backed down from the planned Britney piece today claiming the climate within Britney's world and family "too tense".

Yes. Well. Talking about Britney and her "problems" without Britney's presence would have been "one-sided" no matter how Dr. Phil couched the terms or put in the guise of a psychological "discussion".

No matter how intellectual the conversation it's still talking (using) someone else's problems, tragedy in some manner. If it's used to garner ratings then it's crass.

Dr. Phil and his customary guests are usually real people not pop princesses. Britney's problems, that of being raised a child star, singing and starring in suggestive videos in her teenage years, earning millions of dollars before her 20th birthday, we find it hard to believe that any audience could relate.

We're glad Dr. Phil took that step back from the Britney "show" idea.

Dr. Phil does help people. He's a no nonsense, common sense kind of psychologist who's helped untold people lead happier lives, find answers and a way out of addictions, low self-esteem, you name it.

And we're hoping Dr. Phil can help Britney, cause God knows, she needs it.
