Obituary Requests Cash to Obama in Lieu of Flowers

Crowley, Francis "Two Gun" (1900-1931)
"You sons of bitches. Give my love to Mother."

Some go quietly, some leave last requests and some, final words. It's rare that you find someone willing to "break out of the mold" in regards to certain "norms". One such example is the family of the recently deceased long time Virginia Delegate and former Charlottesville Mayor Mitchell Van Yahres and the request his family put in his obituary in the Charlottesville Virginia Daily Progess :
"His friends, who nearly included everyone who met him, are asked, in lieu of expenditures on flowers and the like, to make a healthy and significant contribution to the presidential campaign of Barack Obama or, if they insist, the charity of their choice.” Obituary - Mitchell Van Yahres - Source - Daily Progress

Long time Virginia Delegate and former Charlottesville Mayor Mitchell Van Yahres died Friday from complications from lung surgery but not before he made his wishes known he was going to endorse Obama for President.

~ Gordon, George, Lord Byron (1788-1824)
"Good night."

Van Yahres served for 24 years in the Virginia House of Delegates and was also the former Mayor of Charlottesville. A staunch backer of industrial hemp and tireless advocate for the poor, Democrat Van Yahres worked to establish local farmer markets, better legal representation for poor criminal defendants and in 2001, brought forth a bill which the state of Virginia issued a formal apology to "its profound regret for the practice of involuntary sterilization of thousands of poor people and mental patients."

I am ready to meet my Maker.

Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal
of meeting me is another matter.
Winston Churchill

The Van Yahres family's request to send contributions to Obama instead of flowers was a wonderful gesture, honoring their loved one's last wishes and the life that he led, that of a man who sincerely wanted to make a difference in politics. A man who found Obama to be the most likely to carry forward his ideals.

We're also sure there will be some gnashing of teeth from local florists because of money that will go to Obama instead of fancy cemetery sprays.
