Zero Tolerence Policies Piss Me Off

An Experiment in Subliminally Educating Zero Tolerance Educators.

Florida's citizens rest a little easier today after a dangerous 10-year-old girl was arrested for using a knife to eat lunch at school.

The forces who push for "Zero Tolerance" laws have an outstanding record this year nationwide: no deaths have been recorded from toy soldiers, fingernail files, drawings of guns or kitchen utensils in schools with zero tolerance rules in effect.

All of the above dangers have led to elementary school thugs being either arrested or expelled for violating zero tolerance laws.

Zero tolerance led the following potential felon being thwarted by the quick-thinking actions of a lunchroom monitor.
A 10-year old Ocala girl brought her lunch to school and a small kitchen knife to cut it. She now faces a felony charge after being arrested. The school and the sheriff's office disagree on the reason for the arrest.

Law enforcement raced to the scene to arrest the 10-year-old, but may have violated her rights when her Miranda Rights couldn't be heard over her criminal sobs.
School officials say the 5th grader was brown-bagging it. She brought a piece of steak for her lunch, but she also brought a steak knife. That's when deputies were called.

It happened in the cafeteria at Sunrise Elementary School. The 10-year-old used the knife to cut the meat.

A spokesman for the Marion County Schools outlined the threat the girl posed.
"She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature," explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian.

Fast-acting highly-trained professional educators sniffed out the danger, however.
But a couple of teachers took the utensil and called the sheriff. When deputies arrived, they were unable to get the child's parents on the phone, so they arrested her and took her to the county's juvenile assessment center.

Deputies explained the procedure.
"And we didn't handcuff her or treat her like a criminal. But, we took her to the assessment center to be assessed," said Capt. James Pogue, Marion County Sheriff's Office.

The 10-year-old wasn't treated like a criminal, except to be led away by armed law enforcement personal from an elementary school.

School officials were quick to confirm why the public holds educators in such high regard.
School officials said it doesn't matter what the knife was being used for. They said they had no choice.

"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances, regardless," Christian said.
Teachers' unions want more pay, more benefits and more respect.

The deputies issued a statement that put them on record as embarrassed. No such statement was coming from the school board, the principal or the teachers.

But the sheriff's office said the extreme measures in what some may say was a harmless incident had to do with school policy, not theirs.

"But once we're notified, we have to take some type of action," Pogue explained.

The principal levied his justice; the criminal courts will have to decide theirs.
The student now faces a felony charge for the possession of a weapon on school property and the principal suspended her for ten days. The parents of the girl could not be reached for comment.

[NOTE: This story is such an exhibition of stupidity, it's hard to keep one's thoughts straight. We'll calm down and write another ending as soon as the assholes in zero tolerance schools districts calm down and exhibit any sign of thinking or judgment. And we promise not to try to subliminally influence any educators who may be reading in the future. We're sorry for any inconvenience.]

"Zero Tolerance" Still Means Zero Sense

The American Thinker has a post with which we are in complete agreement: the argument against "zero tolerance" policies. Zero Tolerance scores a zero, whether it's guns, drugs or whatever the subject may be.

The increasing enactment of these zero-thinking policies for 7-year-olds and other students are another sign that those in charge of education are in need of one that includes thinking skills. Examples are provided by the Thinker:
Just ask the 7-year-old in New Jersey who was suspended for drawing a smiling stick figure shooting another smiling stick figure with a gun. He reportedly also drew pictures of a skateboarder, a ghost, King Tut, a tree, and a Cyclops. These are still apparently not yet illegal acts of art.

Meanwhile, in South Carolina, high school student Amber Dauge faced expulsion for accidentally taking a butter knife to school. She says that she ran out of the house to meet the bus while making a sandwich and when she realized she had the knife, she put it in her bookbag, and later left it in her locker at. A few weeks later, the butter knife fell out, fellow students saw it, a teacher intervened, and the over-reaction commenced. The knife was seized, Amber was suspended, and the process of expelling her from high school began.
Supposedly, the reason education administrators get the big bucks is because they have to exercise judgment. Zero-tolerance policies are like a color-by-numbers for those running the schools; i.e., there's not a lot of thinking involved. The losers? The usual ones, the kids.

Zero-tolerance policies haven't prevented one outbreak of violence in American schools. The policies have kept schoolchildren amazingly safe from butter knives, stick figures, plastic army men, and other kids who might make "bang" sounds while waving their fingers about on the playground. What they have also prevented is any outbreak of common sense among education honchos in charge of our schools' safety.

Zero tolerance continues to equal zero sense. It's something that administrators will talk about while deciding what traditional subjects to next chop from the curriculum. What's the chance zero tolerance policies will see a downturn in popularity among the educational elite without strong parental outrage?

About zero.

Zero Tolerance, Zero Sense:

Stick Figure Gun Gets
2nd-Grader Kicked Out of School

by Mondoreb & Little Baby Ginn

Zero tolerance often mean zero judgment or zero sense. A story for all those who raise questions when school boards pass any "zero tolerance" rules.
Salt Lake City Tribune:
A second-grader's drawing of a stick figure shooting a gun earned him a one-day school suspension. No stick figure gun rules were violated in the making of this story's commentary.

Kyle Walker, 7, was suspended last week for violating Dennis Township Primary School's zero-tolerance policy on guns, the boy's mother, Shirley McDevitt, told The Press of Atlantic City.

Kyle gave the picture to another child on the school bus, and that child's parents complained about it to school officials, McDevitt said. Her son told her the drawing was of a water gun, she said.
This is not the first time a stick figure gun has gotten a small fry artist booted from school. When people bring up questions about the abuse of common sense when zero tolerance rules or laws are being debated, they are often portrayed as "extreme".

It only takes a few of these examples to illustrate zero tolerance is often zero common sense.
