Westboro Baptist Stops in Wheeling, Protests Dead Miners

Six Members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church stopped in Wheeling, WV and made the rounds to many of the city’s Catholic churches. They said God hated American soldiers, dead coal miners, Catholics, WV, fags, Jews and assorted others. But everything and everyone "God" hated told the crowds more about WBC than the Almighty's preferences.

Members of the congregation from the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, Topeka KS, stopped in Wheeling, WV and made the rounds to many of the city's Catholic churches. Setting up outside of St. Michaels first, the group then moved to St. Alphonsus and Cathedral of St. Joseph, before winding up with a scheduled appearance outside of Wheeling Jesuit University.

The six Westboro-ians--three adults and three children--displayed their special brand of Christianity by signs, singing and shouting. American soliders, Jews, Catholics, the Pope, fags, Barack Obama, coal miners, even West Virginia itself: all were subjects of colorful signs waved by the protesters.

Escorted by a strong police presence--at least seven officers and one rumored FBI agent--the church members alighted from a couple of dark Chevy Tahoes. At least one of the vehicles had Ohio license plates.

Westboro Baptist's website [GodHatesFags.com] states that the group has participated in 43,085 peaceful demonstrations to date.

Just who were the out-of-towners? From Westboro Baptist Church:

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an Independent Baptist church and hate group known for its hatred of homosexuals. It is headed by Fred Phelps and located in Topeka, Kansas, United States. Its first public service was held on the afternoon of Sunday, November 27, 1955.

The WBC is not affiliated with any known Baptist conventions or associations. The church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist and Calvinist principles, though mainstream Primitive Baptists reject the WBC and Phelps.

The group is best known for its protest activities, which include picketing funerals and desecration of the American flag.

About 300 counter-protesters showed up at the Cathedral of St. Joseph appearance. According to onlookers and police, a crowd of approximately 1000 showed up at St. Michael's earlier in the day, with about half that many following the Westboro bunch to St. Alphonsus.

The crowd got into the spirit of things by alternately chanting "USA! USA! USA!" and "Go Home!" The counter-protesters also came equipped with signs, most which were much less dramatic than the ones from Kansas.

The crowd was composed primarily of people from Wheeling, a group of Young Life members, and folks from the surrounding communities. Moundsville, New Martinsville and Benwood were all represented. Several people were from neighboring towns from across the river in Ohio.

The more Americans see of the preening whine-meister in the Oval Office, the lower his approval ratings go. The country is growing restive under the thumb of Barack Hussein Jagger and his band of Democrat cronies.

While Obama and crew never miss a chance to savage "the fat cats" on TV, it's all kibbles and bits behind the scenes as Democrats attract huge amounts of special interest money.

Barack Obama recreates the Jimmy Carter years: America's enemies are laughing, her friends are nervous. And the world respects this president every bit as much as they respected Carter. Instead of handing out government cheese, this president hands out weatherstripping.

The CIA is a punching bag: under our Rolling Stone president, Eric Holder and the Justice Dept. are the perpetrators; under Carter, the dirty work was outsourced to the Senate's Church Committee. But the results are the same: America is less safe, though it will take months before that becomes apparent to the apolitical.

Instead of Iran taking American embassy personnel hostages--as they did under Carter--32 years later, they'll be going nuclear. With Obama, as with Carter, there will be no retaliation.

Who's scared of a rock star?

The only ones even paying attention to our rock star president are roadies and toadies.

That is why countries on the edge of the civilizational clash between the West and its enemies are choosing the strong horse over the rock star: Lebanon kisses up with Syria; Kyrgyzstan with Russia; and everyone within missile distance of Tehran is rushing to either acquire their own deterrents or making nice with Ahmadinejad.

How strange that the words to remember to help get through the remainder of this president's administration are "Don't give up hope."

Only 32 more months of Mick Obama to go.

Media Matters: Some Senior Fellow Candidates

Mark Steyn has questions.:

By the way, I understood Media Matters to be a George Soros-funded website. Is it normal for websites to have "senior fellows"? The Media Matters guy who used to to transcribe my "lame jokes" from The Rush Limbaugh Show is now apparently a Senior Fellow. Can we have some? Which NRO Professor Emeritus of Racism and Homophobia do I have to kiss up to to get a little tenured credentialization around here?

And Steyn is absolutely right: what other website features "senior fellow" other than the AARP?

Which prompted us to go looking for some "senior fellows." We found some and wondered if they toiled for Media Matters.

Gee, a study found that when we give poor countries money, a lot of it went to corruption.

After getting millions of dollars to fight AIDS, some African countries responded by slashing their health budgets, new research says.

For years, the international community has forked over billions in health aid, believing the donations supplemented health budgets in poor countries. It now turns out development money prompted some governments to spend on entirely different things, which cannot be tracked. The research was published Friday in the medical journal Lancet. …

The research raises questions about whether international aid is sometimes detrimental. Previous studies have found pricey United Nations health initiatives haven’t paid off and occasionally hurt health systems. Experts estimate about half of international health aid can’t be traced in the budgets of receiving countries.

What can we learn from this study that we really should have already known?

1. Money is fungible – Giving block grants to a state for one purpose doesn’t mean that the purpose gets more money. It allows the state to divert its already-committed resources to other purposes. We’ve learned that here in the US with Porkulus block grants to states. Without accountability, that money can go anywhere and either directly or indirectly feed the corruption at the heart of Africa’s problems.
2. Corruption is the root cause of nationwide poverty – We have sent monetary aid to Africa for decades in attempts to fix the problems of poverty and disease. That should tell us that money isn’t really the root problem in these countries. The governments, mostly corrupt dictatorships, create the problems through outright theft or the imposition of incompetent central economic planning. In Zimbabwe, for just one example, it’s both. That nation’s land used to provide for much of Africa’s food, and now it can’t even feed itself.
3. We need to change direction in Africa – None of us want to see an entire continent fail, but we apparently have two choices. Either we drop billions on Africa every year in aid that extends the status quo, or we cut off the aid and force African nations to change from within. The US had moved toward the latter in the last few years, but guilt-trip initiatives (however well meaning) keep putting political pressure on nations to maintain the status quo.

More handouts enable corruption.

US 30 Dragstrip Video: US 30 in 1964

US30 DRAGSTRIP

U.S.30 was a local "Chicagoland area" but nationally known dragstrip in the 50s all the way into the early 80s. Like other venues of that time it fell victim to "progress," but for the many that attended the races there it lives on in our memories. A lot of us were hooked on a lifelong love affair with drag racing at tracks like this, but U.S. 30--in what was then Gary Indiana--holds a special place in the hearts of the people that went there.

Those really WERE the days.

It's June 1964. I'm 17 and my older cousin asked me if I wanted to go to a drag race. He's friends with a couple of guys (Lutz and Garns ) that built an A/FD dragster in their garage (and it turns out that these guys were some of the first to break the 8 second 1/4 mile barrier).

OF COURSE I wanted to go!

Since I was living in Northern Michigan then and was visiting relatives in Chicago at the time, it was a chance of a lifetime for me! So I got my Bell and Howell movie camera and my still camera and off we went with Lutz and Garns to U.S.30 dragstrip in Gary Indiana.

That day changed my life.

I was hooked, but living in the frozen North, my opportunities to return were limited. However, I had the movies and pictures that would remind me of that day for years to come.

Late at night, working on my car models I would sometimes get WLS radios Dick Biondi show and hear Jan Gabriel's voice (as I still do)

"SUNDAY!!....SUNDAY!!....SUNDAY!!...At beautiful U.S. 30 Dragstrip......where the GREAT ones run" and remember that day. In the intervening years I moved to Denver Colorado and found Bandimere Speedway and all those memories of U.S.30 came flooding back as they have for the 20 years we've been going to the Mile Hi Nationals.

Fast forward to 2010.

Rummaging through some old family photos and 8mm film I found a treasure I thought had been lost. All my film and photos from that day in 1964! So I decided to make a video of that day to share with all the people that remember U.S.30 and those who unfortunately never got to experience the sights, sounds and smells of that drag racing era and especially the beloved U.S.30.

Those were the days.

As a narcissist, he's in his element when the conversation is on him--and is it ever. It seems that everyone has their theory or comparison to make about our president. Many of them are not only entertaining, they're perceptive.

Of course, most of the speculation is natural: nature abhors a vacuum--and when it comes to BHO's past, like his 2008 campaign strategy, the man's a blank slate. No college, medical, university and other records are available to the public; so speculation rushes in to fill the void.

2010 Rielle Hunter Mistress Rehab Media Tour Continues

Former mistress and current media manipulator, Rielle Hunter, has booked the second leg of her Image Rehab Tour on Oprah the first week of May. But how was her first stop received? What did readers think of her infamous 10-page GQ interview?

Did Rielle Hunter change any minds out there? We were curious, so we went looking.

But first, a bit of history, for those coming late to the story.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY's Jeff Labrecque has the conventional wisdom on John Edwards' mistress, Rielle Hunter's Magical Mistress Make-Over Tour.

Now that Edwards’ political career is kaput, do we really need to grant Hunter a showcase for her version of the tawdry details?

Fair or not, is there anything Hunter can tell Oprah that will improve her public image? Do you even want to hear what she has to say? Will you watch?

That seems to the take from both the Left and Right. Hunter seems to be a lot like medicine: you can only take her in very small doses. The correct dosage for Rielle seems to be smaller than she's willing to provide.

One can only image what Hunter would be doing today instead of doing Oprah had the media chose to cover the affair back when it was relevant in 2007-08.

Instead, a total black-out (with the exception of a few lines in the NY Post) of coverage imposed a news vacuum for 10 months--until Edwards gave the go-ahead for his buddies in the media to talk about it by "confessing" on ABC's Nightline on August 8, 2008.

If the story had been covered from the beginning, Edwards would have bowed out and the soap opera that ensued would not have happened: No Enquirer chasing Edwards around the Beverly Hilton, no tortured non-denial denials, no Nightline lies and drama.

Rielle Hunter would be at best Old News--or no news at all.

No doubt Hunter would be proposing some type of reality show which featured the appearance of her daughter, Frances Quinn. Quinn is the only thing that makes Hunter palatable in print or TV.

And she knows it.

Hence any media must make the trek to Charlotte, NC to interview her at her home--where conveniently, FQ also resides. Frances Q. becomes a topic of conversation during the interview--thus lifting the focus, if for only a few moments--from the frothy narcissism-cum-Eastern mystical cluelessness that makes up Hunter's persona.

If the EPA regulated auras, there'd be a TOXIC DO NOT ENTER sign nailed to Hunter's forehead.

But enough. What do readers think?

Here's some comments from the GQ interview itself. These are representative. After combing through pages, no positive comments on Rielle Hunter were found.

Rielle Hunter seems to be the Richard Nixon of mistresses.

But that's not an exact parallel: Nixon had his foreign policy admirers.

BTW, Zara, you mentioned a comparison to Camilla Parker Bowles and I must respectfully disagree. 1. Camilla kept her mouth shut. She never once gave a tell-all interview even after they married. 2. Unlike Johnny & Ms. New Age Hunter, I believe Charles and Camilla clearly loved each other and had a relationship that went far beyond sex. 3. Camilla actually had a means to support herself other than living off a man. (She was heiress to a property development fortune from a grandfather, but even before that, she actually WORKED.) 4. Lastly, Charles actually married Camilla whereas I think there is a better chance of Johnny Boy being elected to public office again than ever marrying this woman.

Well, kids, we haven't heard the last of Rielle Hunter. CNN reported today that Oprah is going to interview her. While I wish Oprah would not have agreed to this since it is clear Hunter craves attention, I doubt this is going to be any softball interview. She had Andrew Young on a few months ago and did nothing to hide her disgust over John making that sex tape and lying repeatedly to Elizabeth. Oprah is a helluva lot smarter than Hunter, so it will be interesting to see this!
