Cop's Newest Arsenal: M113A2 Armored Personnel Carrier

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department's newest weapon against crime!

Crooks in Richland County beware, you can run, especially if it's over 40 mph, but you can't hide, the M113A2 is coming to town.


The next time you've got $2,000 bucks and are looking to supplement your crime fighting abilities, consider the M113A2 Armored Personnel Carrier.

That's exactly what the Richland County Sheriff's Department in South Carolina did, more big, BIG bang for their buck when they purchased their M113A2 from military surplus.

M113 Armored Personnel Carrier

The original M113 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) helped to revolutionize mobile military operations. The vehicles were able to carry 11 soldiers plus a driver and track commander under armor protection across hostile battlefield environments. More importantly, the new vehicles were air transportable, air-droppable, and swimmable, allowing planners to incorporate APCs in a much wider range of combat situations, including many "rapid deployment" scenarios. The M113s were so successful that they were quickly identified as the foundation for a family of vehicles. Currently getting sandblasted over at Lonnie Roberts Auto Service, the carrier will be used by the department's Special Response Team (SWAT) for "hostile environments" such as suspects who have barricaded themselves, hostage situations, executing warrants and crowd control.



After getting sanded the carrier will then be painted "stealth" black and decorated with the Sheriff's department logo.

The net weight of the M113A2 is 23,880 lb. and carries up to 13 passengers. The fuel tank holds up to 95 gallons of diesel fuel with a cruising range of up to 300 miles which, we figured, means about 3.2 miles per gallon. (Yikes) With 275 HP, the top speed is 41 MPH with a 16'' clearance.

For $2000.00 the Sheriff's Department got a hell of a deal. You can't hardly buy a decent used car at that piece, especially one that carries up to a dozen people and withstand heavy artillery.

We'd consider getting one too but with the price of gas still hovering around three bucks a gallon, the cost of auto insurance, finding a mechanic and parking spaces, we'll have to pass.

Beast of Bolivia: Mystery Beast on Loose

Even a Mystery Beast has to eat

Question: How do you know a Mystery Beast has been at your place?

Answer: Your pit bull's dead, your animals are scared and your Puppy Chow's all gone.

An unknown predator mauled a pit bull and killed two puppies in Brunswick County, and residents fear it's the same animal that killed three dogs in September. No one has reported ever seeing the animal.

The county's animal control agency investigated the animal's tracks, droppings and other clues but couldn't determine what attacked the dogs. Locals call the unknown animal the Beast of Bolivia.

Some residents and experts said the predator may be a bear, a wayward panther or cougar, or even a wolf because 3-inch paw tracks were found at the scene.

Many suggest the predator came from the nearby Faircloth Zoo, which had a lion and a tiger before it closed more than a year ago. Animal control officials said the animals were sent elsewhere.

Well...

We know it isn't Michael Vick.

Financial Crime Career Cut Short: Man Busted Trying to Open Bank Account with $1 Million Dollar Bill

Maybe he should have read the Wall Street Journal first.

A man was arrested trying to pass a million dollar bill at a bank.

Police say a man tried to open an account with a $1 million bill, which does not exist. The teller refused and called police while the man started to curse at bank workers, said Aiken County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Michael Frank.

Alexander D. Smith, 31, of Augusta, Ga., was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of forgery, Frank said.

The second forgery charge came after investigators learned Smith bought several cartons of cigarettes from a nearby grocery store with a stolen check, Frank said.

Further proof that what seemed to be a perfectly good idea--after a night of drinking with your crew down at the Jerry Springer Bar & Grill--might be lacking upon further thought.

The sad end of an obviously promising financial crime career.

If you put up a Ron Paul video, you hear both sides, you read both sides--there seems to be no middle ground on Dr. Paul. No comments or emails are ever received which say "Oh, I don't know how I feel about Ron Paul".

I hear people swear by Ron Paul; I hear others swear at him.

So, putting up any video invites attacks, even though most posters are passionate, yet perfectly civil. We thought this video would be a good illustration of the "No Middle Ground About Ron Paul" Theory. It's the famous exchange between Paul and Rudy Giuliani at the South Carolina debate earlier this year. It's the entire exchange: most anti-Paul videos cut away at Giuliani's applause. The pro-Paul videos we've seen only show Ron Paul's answer to Rudy.

At 4:34, this is the entire back-and-forth between the two men. Your position on the issues will naturally affect who you think came out on top here.
