Climate Change: Man-made Hockey Sticks

Your Ad Here

The Climatic Hokey Schtick

The primary drive for global weather panic, otherwise known as GLOBAL WARMING (gasp), comes from a simpleton graph by Michael E. Mann, known as The Hockey Stick. This graph reputed to show that the Earth was undergoing an unprecedented spike in temperature. The graph has been criticized by many real statisticians, paleontological climate scientists, and simple weathermen for various reasons.

The usual criticism is centered on the simple point that to establish a "norm" in statistics, one must be confident that a wide spread and accurate body of data exists to create a base line. For example, selecting Friday night at PM to average out the price of hotel rooms in New York City may not actually reflect..........the price of hotel rooms in New York City. And 1979 is really a bad year to suddenly start modern global weather science, but that is where the United Nations, NASA, and NOAA do,....... because that is when the USA put up the first weather satellite. 1979 was cold. Hey, but who cares? Seems like a nice place to begin if you want to prove the world .....warming.

In fact the world did significantly warm from 1979 thru 1998. And while temperatures have not risen since, the world remain a fraction of a degree warmer on average than it was from 1950 through 1979. This has apparently convinced many that the world is about to turn into Venus--and mankind is responsible.

But is this temperature really that historically unique?

Mann's Hockey Stick graph, Keith Briffa's information and graph of his own concluded as much.. In fact this information was incorporated, graph and all, into the United Nations report on Global Warming.

Many scientists always were skeptical of Mann and Briffa's seemingly absolute ability to discern average temperatures around the globe for tens of thousands of years. We presently cannot tell you the temperature of central Antarctica or Baffin Island.... last year or... last week.

But Mann and Briffa demonstrated to everyone that the present run up of the world's temperature for a 30 year period, from 1979 through 2007 was unprecedented, and hence gave Global Warmists their strongest data point that Global Warming was anthropogenic in origin. Because, well no one knows the because. Because a minor greenhouse gas, CO2, seemed to increase in correlation to the temperature.

Duh. (Could it be because a warmer world increases biologic and geologic CO2 ?)
Human kind exudes a great deal of Carbon Dioxide. All fauna does. Humans now contribute almost 6 billions tons a year to atmospheric Carbon Dioxide .

Against nature's 183 billion tons.

A year.

But what if the entire Hockey Stick graph was manufactured? What if the famous Hockey Stick was purposely created to prove a POLITICAL point?

That the Western World needed to become more like South America.
That Americans are evil.
That they should be punished?
That all of the Western World should be punished.
That people should have less babies.
That old people should be kindly eliminated.
That the unfit should be humanely disposed of.
That Democracy was an aboration that let peasants have a say over the 'much smarter'...and that these smarter people now need to create a series of International Treaties to deal with the aberrant societies.

As it turn out: it is true.

Manufactured by creating evidence by purposely choosing temperature proxies that favored a graph showing that historical Earth temperatures were markedly colder than now. Thus creating the impression that current temperatures are not only unusual, but an impetus to ...PANIC!!!!.

Steve McIntyre, has finally, after years of requests, has managed to get his hands on the temperature proxies selected by Briffa to establish the planet was in a runaway heat up. Proxies are obviously necessary because there were no thermometers around at the times we are interested in. So we use ice cores, ocean sediment, tree rings, dead civilizations, and geologic evidence to try to deduce past weather. Of course it is notoriously inaccurate. And extremely regional. In fact the Southern Hemisphere and the Northern often seem to be out of tune with each other.

Of all of the proxies one may use, tree rings seem the flimsiest. Tree rings vary because of sunlight, rain, weather, and stress. And there is only general correlation between these variables. Sometimes none at all.

So Mann and Briffa selected ....tree rings as his temperature proxy. The key word being 'selected'. Which cleared up why the data sources were basically concealed for 14 years. Briffa and Mann, who utilized the Briffa data selected tree proxies that indicated warming by their analytical methodology. When McIntyre included all proxies available to Briffa from the same sources, a decidedly different picture emerges:

Yup. The Hockey Stick turns into a Hokey Shtick.

James Hansen: Cooking the NASA Books for Climate Change

Your Ad Here

NASA's James Hansen:
Pimping Climate Change on the Public Dime

Meet James Hansen

In America, and perhaps the world, the pre-eminent source for global weather information is NASA. Blessed with three or more temperature measuring satellites, NASA also collects data from NOAA and foreign sources to get a fix on global temperatures. This convergence of resources is unparalleled , and thus much of the world uses NASA's continually-revised data and graphs to determine weather history and policy.

Which is unfortunate.

Particularly, because NASA simply cannot be trusted to provide scientifically unbiased information on this subject. When not demonstrating incomprehensible incompetence, NASA cooks the books.

Chef-in-chief is Dr. James Hansen.

James Hansen's name should sound familiar. He is the fellow who has been screaming about global warming for over 20 years. He famously claimed that the Bush Administration was trying to silence him (huh?).

He is the detached scientists that went to Congress and testified that oil executives should be tried for crimes against humanity. (Wonder what penal statute that is?)

In real life, as opposed to the imaginary one occupied by the marvelous Dr James Hansen, the man is like an incompetent, unthinking, dogmatic, dolt: systematically reducing NASA to a high school-level science fair.

The latest, as reported by the Daily Tech:

Amateur team finds NASA error similar to one they discovered a year ago.

GISS’ most recent data release originally reported last October as being extraordinarily warm-- a full 0.78C above normal. This would have made it the warmest October on record; a huge increase over the previous month's data.

Those results set off alarm bells with Steve McIntyre and his gang of Baker Street irregulars at Climateaudit.org. They noted that NASA's data didn't agree at all with the satellite temperature record, which showed October to be very mild, continuing the same trend of slight cooling that has persisted since 1998. So they dug a little deeper.

McIntyre, the same man who found errors last year in GISS's US temperature record, quickly noted that most of the temperature increase was coming from Russia. A chart of world temperatures showed that in October, most of Russia, the largest nation on Earth, was not only registering hot, but literally off the scale. Yet anecdotal reports were suggesting that worldwide, October was actually slightly colder than normal. Could there be another error in GISS's data?

An alert reader on McIntyre's blog revealed that there was a very large problem. Looking at the actual readings from individual stations in Russia showed a curious anomaly. The locations had all been assigned the exact temperatures from a month earlier-- the much warmer month of September. Russia cools very rapidly in the fall months, so recycling the data from the earlier month had led to a massive temperature increase."

[ABOVE: Russian October 2008]

I know what you are thinking. Anybody could have made the same mistake: using September data for October. And you might be right. Because the Wonder Boys and Girls at NASA do it all the time.

The really odd thing is: it is a one-way street.

Because such errors, inexplicably, always show the Earth warming.

Even if it isn't.

The correction forced upon NASA last year was even more dramatic because it altered the entire Global Warming premise (although I am sure you have not heard a word about this in the media).

Going over the NASA historical weather graph, Steve McKintyre noticed some severe and unlikely high temperature spikes. He asked NASA for its mathematical model in an attempt to understand the same. A model is necessary because weather averages and means are based upon widely divergent observations, with sparse reporting on the high seas (thus satellites), Antarctica, and Africa.

NASA refused (of course).

McKintyre reverse engineered the model and discovered NASA had fallen victim to a Y2K bug. The result:

"NASA has now silently released corrected figures, and the changes are truly astounding.

The warmest year on record is now 1934.

1998 (long trumpeted by the media as record-breaking) moves to second place. 1921 takes third. In fact, 5 of the 10 warmest years on record now all occur before World War II.

Revision of data at NASA is all too common.

It works like this: if the data does not support global warming, it is wrong. So it must be revised. From the Wall Street Journal:

For years, records from surface thermometers showed a global warming trend beginning in the late 1970s. But temperatures sensed by satellites and weather balloons displayed no concurrent warming. These records have been revised a number of times, and I examined the two major revisions of these three records.....There have been six major revisions in the warming figures in recent years, all in the same direction.

That direction would be to make the past colder thus making the current temperature appear warmer. Why have surface temperatures warmed? As Dr Alan Watts has long since proved, because of urbanization and the deterioration of locations of the thermometers. They are located in heat wells, near AC vents or at airports.Ridiculous. The background radiation should be measured in a grassy field of an acre or so, with instrumentation in a vented shad shed at least 4 feet off the ground.

Try to find that anymore.

As for NASA, you would think they would be pleased to have bloggers and casual observers correct their incompetence. Actually, we are kidding you there. Again from the Wall Street Journal:

So far this year NASA has issued at least five press releases that could be described as alarming on the pace of climate change. But the correction of its overestimate of global warming was merely posted on the agency's Web site. James Hansen, NASA's ubiquitous climate scientist and a man who has charged that the Bush Administration is censoring him on global warming, has been unapologetic about NASA's screw up. He claims that global warming skeptics -- "court jesters," he calls them -- are exploiting this incident to "confuse the public about the status of knowledge of global climate change, thus delaying effective action to mitigate climate change.

So having been proved wrong, James Hansen, Weather Clown, insists that what was just disproved is still correct.

Wonderful science there.

Hansen recently made headlines when he travelled to London to testify on behalf of a group of environmentalists who had damaged a coal plant in protest against global warming. Hansen also serves as science advisor to Al Gore.

Hansen is a crank. And he should be fired He is a media whore whose boundless ignorance and prejudice have endangered the economic future of this nation and has destroyed the reputation of NASA.

Martin Eisenstadt-Palin Hoax: No Harm, No Foul

Your Ad Here

True Confessions:
Martin Eisenstadt Story a HOAX
The Hoax of Manmade Climate Change Still Not Reported

Sarah Palin Africa Story Leaker is a Hoax
--But, HOAX Quickly Discovered

Yesterday's story from an obscure blog, Martin Eisenstadt's Blog, claimed the author the source of the "Sarah Palin doesn't know Africa is a continent" news leak.

"Eisenstadt the source for Sarah Palin Africa leak...and Proud of it"

By now you’ve all heard the Fox News report last week that “unnamed” former McCain advisers
leaked that Sarah Palin was confused about whether Africa was a continent, and which countries were in NAFTA. I was perfectly happy staying under the radar as an anonymous source for Fox NewsCarl Cameron, but now that Palin has accused her accusers of being “unprofessional…jerks…cowards… taking things out of context, and then tried to spread something on national news” and begun to cast doubt on the Fox News report, maybe she’s right to a certain extent. For those of us on the McCain campaign who thought that she acted like a rogue diva and lost John the election, maybe we DO have a responsibility to come out in public. But Sarah… careful what you ask for: some of us may have more to reveal.

So yes, to be clear, last week I was the one who leaked those things to a producer at Fox News who works with Cameron. Carl and his producers are good guys, and I don’t want them to have to worry about protecting their sources (and going through the wringer ala Judith Miller or Matt Cooper) on something like this.

The story turns out to be as believable as the original leaks were.

That is, they were a hoax.

Some reported on the Eisenstadt revelation; some didn't.

The hoax was caught fairly quickly and alerts issued. MSNBC broadcast the hoax as fact before they caught it. Anyone who watched MSNBC's election coverage couldn't tell any difference in the network's accuracy--either before or after the hoax broadcast.

But we say, whether you wrote or broadcast it or not: it was discovered quickly, so no harm, no foul.

Allah Pundit summed it up pretty well, Video: MSNBC falls for Palin/Eisenstadt hoax

Specifically, this hoax. I’d love to throw stones at them and TNR, but people on our own side were taken in too.

Guys? The post at Shakespeare’s Sister revealing the hoax is linked on the first page of the Google results for “Martin Eisenstadt.” Remember these goofball viral “ads” for Giuliani? Anything look familiar?

The “Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy”? Named after one of America’s worst presidents, whose term in office lasted two years with zero foreign policy accomplishments?

We'd agree with all of that and add one observation. At least TNR didn't take months to report that they'd been had--unlike the Beauchamp diaries fiasco.

Some of the places commenting on the whole affair--both pre- and post-hoax--are listed below.

One Hoax Remains Unreported by the MSM

At least the Eisenstadt story was exposed early on. Most of the places who reported on it were good sports, such as ACE: HOAX: Martin Eisenstadt Admits He's One of Palin-Smear Leakers; Threatens to "Reveal" More

Now that I put a face to the made-up persona, I can see it seems a bit unlikely that a 28 year old NYC hipster-wannabe is a major McCain foreign policy adviser.

Well, he got me.

TNR Retracts... But refuses to credit Allah for alerting them to the hoax.

Note: A dinky site would notice the Hot Air traffic. Not only is Michael Crowley a dupe (as I was), but now he's a dishonest one, pretending that he discovered the hoax on his own.

The only thing we'd disagree with Ace about is the "dupe" label.

Once upon a time, the media reported news. If the news turned out to be false, they reported that also. Then, the name of the media game became, "We're going to hold stories until every last detail can be confirmed".

Fine.

But that policy then morphed into, "We're going to hold stories that we don't think readers have the finely-tuned understanding and reasoning skills about which to make a judgment".

Finally, that policy became--at many MSM outlets--"We're going to hold stories that we don't agree with or that we think are detrimental to our editorial policy".

That policy was responsible for ABC's refusal to air one minute of coverage on the John Edwards scandal--until Edwards turned up on ABC's Nightline on August 8 and started talking about mistresses and babies and hush money and getting caught in the Beverly Hilton.

Imagine ABC viewers' surprise when they learned that the story had been on-going for ten months and they were kept in the dark.

The New York Times, MSNBC, Washington Post, CBS, and the LA Times, among others, duped their readers/viewers for months during the primary and general elections on any number of unreported topics concerning Barack Obama.

They are duping them still on the issue of climate change, though that will be harder to pull off--especially when their news customers are digging out from underneath three feet of global warming.

So, the Eisenstadt 'confession' about the Sarah Palin leaks was a hoax.

Big deal.

It was quickly exposed in the blogosphere. Meanwhile, the other hoaxes which pass for 'news' in daily Mainstream Media reporting continue.

The Eisenstadt hoax was discovered and reported upon. It's a mistake to think that anyone reporting on the original story somehow had their credibility harmed when they quickly reported that it was a sham story.

The man-made climate change hoax has been discovered, but remains largely unreported in the Mainstream Media.

It's when long-running stories have two sides and readers/viewers only hear one of them from supposed "objective news sources" that credibility--and bottom lines--plunge.

Getting hoaxed? Big deal.

Continuing to report a hoax after there's doubt the story is true?

That's everyday policy at most MSM organizations.

Record Low Temperatures Worldwide Highlight Climate Change News Round-Up

A round-up of Global Warming News.

From New Mexico:
Time to dust off the mukluks.

This week's frigidly cold temperatures — well below freezing and dipping below zero with wind chill factored in — are cause for plenty of teeth-chattering concern for local residents.

Don't forget during the next few days to bundle yourself and your children in layers, keep hats and gloves handy and bring pets in at night.

It's cold, and it's going to stay that way for a few days.

"It's not unusual, but we will come close to record temperatures," said National Weather Service Senior Meteorologist Dan Porter from the Albuquerque office. "People here are sure not used to below-zero temperatures."

The National Weather Service Albuquerque office confirms the mercury dipped well below the old record low temperature of 3 degrees in the Farmington area this morning.

Meteorologist/Forecaster Mark Fettig said the temperature of minus 6 is unofficial until it's double-checked at 11 a.m. this morning — standard procedure for the weather service.

And, in Bulgaria:
Recent heavy snowfalls and temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius claimed yet another life in Bulgaria, taking the cold snap death toll up to seven.

Back to the United States, this time for South Carolina.
The coldest air of the season is here with near record low temperatures expected Thursday morning for both the Pee Dee and Grand Strand. Find out how cold it will get and when it may warm up inside.

And to Texas:
In honor of tonight's forecasted record-setting low temperature (26 F), the kids and I are going to be trying out this recipe that I found in the Dallas Morning News:

Texas Snowflakes
12 large flour tortillas
1/2 stick butter, melted
1/2 cup cinnamon sugar

Agreed, this is only anecdotal evidence.

But it's the only anecdotal evidence we have at the moment.

The man-made climate change crisis continues.

Martian-Made Climate Change: Mars Heating Up

The story of a Martian Nobel Peace Prize in the making?

The folks at Space.com tell it far better than we can.

Mars would make a lousy host for the Winter Olympics. Yes, there's the lack of air to consider. But more important, Martian snow turns out to be rock hard. Worse, it is melting away at an alarming rate.

In fact, Mars may be in the midst of a period of profound climate change, according to a new study that shows dramatic year-to-year losses of snow at the south pole.

It is not yet clear, though, if the evidence of a single year's change represents a trend. But the study provides a surprising new view of the nature of the southern ice cap, said Michael Caplinger of Malin Space Science Systems.

"It's saying that the permanent cap isn't quite so permanent as we thought," Caplinger said in a telephone interview.

A second study of both poles finds that Red Planet snow is more dense and hard than the euphemistic "packed powder" advertised by Eastern ski resorts, and nothing like the soft flakes expected in Utah for the 2002 Olympics. Instead, it's hard as ice.

Though unrelated, the two studies were based on observations made by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor and both will be published in the Dec. 7 issue of the journal Science.

The combined observations represent an exciting new way to look at Mars' atmosphere and how it interacts over time with the polar caps and even soil at mid-latitudes, said David A. Paige, a researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"The new data are showing what's going on on Mars seasonally as well as on interannual time scales in much more detail than we had with previous observations," Paige told SPACE.com.

Where the snow is

Both of Mars' polar regions are covered in permanent caps of ice. Scientists have known since the 1970s that some of the ice in the north is water ice. There may be water ice in the south, too, but there is no firm evidence. Both poles are covered in a veneer of carbon dioxide ice, popularly called "dry ice" here on Earth.

Each cap grows during its winter and recedes in summer.

The research into snow density, lead by David E. Smith of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, confirm that much of the Martian snow is in fact composed of carbon dioxide.

Climate Change 30 Years Ago: Media, Scientists Pimped for Global Cooling

Pictured above: One of the more practical substitutes
proposed by climate changers for fossil fuels energy.
Man-made Climate Change advocates have few suggestions
except more taxes, more regulation.

The climate change debate rages close to home.

DBKP's Little Baby Ginn read a report on the effects of superhot magma on the ice shelf of Greenland, the melting of which has long been claimed by man-made climate change enthusiasts to be caused by the guy-down-the-street's Winnebago.

Sensibly thinking that perhaps magma could melt ice, she wrote a sensible article, "Scientists: Greenland's Super-Thaw Caused by Super-hot Magma Not Global Warming".

Her article was read by a science guy at Knight Science Journalism Tracker who wrote the following objective scientific assessment about LBG's article, in an equally-objective scientific post entitled, "LiveScience: Under Greenland, a thin stretch of crust may be helping the melt".

Some bloggers of the rightish stripe have already embraced and distorted her report - ignoring that it presumes warming air remains the main culprit - to proclaim this as another reason global warming is hogwash. It’s natural stuff like magma, not those trace gases we add to the air, that’s raising the temperature.

DBKP published our answer to the intrepid Tracker yesterday (The Effects of Magma on Ice: Science Trackers Remain Skeptical

Now, Dr. Tony Camplin comes to the rescue of LBG's scientific assault on man-made climate change. His take echoes Ginn's.

Dr. Camplin's Interdisciplinary World has a post that echoes Ginn, "Climate Models Wrong".
Shortly after the Nobel Prize Committee gave out one of the most questionable Peace Prizes ever, a report is now in that says we cannot trust the results of the same 22 models that were the basis for giving out the Prize. In each of the other Nobel Prizes, the people who receive the prizes have to have shown a significant contribution to their field, with actual results resulting in growth of knowledge.

Dr. Camplin adds a summary that should be emblazoned on the shields of anyone battling the bullshit artists in the Man-made Climate Change crowd.
I have said before, and I will say it again: the Left are not interested in the environment. Leftist environmentalists are Red, not Green.

Amen, Doc.

A lot of people alarmed by "man-made climate change" may be too young to remember the last time climate change was in the news. That was in the mid-1970s and, again, there were calls for the United States to "do something before it is too late".

As believeable Then as Now:
Time Cover Story of June 1974

In Time's April 24, 1974 issue, quite another worry troubled climate change scientists: that of global cooling.

Here's what Time wrote just 33 years ago.
As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.

It would be nice if scientists would do some heavy scientific lifting on climate change. Any that has been done involve studies, actual measuring, reflection and gathering data: in short, science stuff.

That data has been collected and analyzed by the "deniers"--the portion of the scientific community that has urged caution.

This time around, caution has not proved to be a match for hysterics.

Click on the above article to read what climate change
theory Newsweek was pimping 30 years ago.

On the other side, the man-made-climate-change-mongers have their computer models. They imput data and swear by the output. The concept of GIGO means nothing to these keen students of the scientific method, whether they are in the media, government or track science journalism at KSJT.

Climate Change Garbage In mean Climate Change Garbage Out.

Of course, any theory that means MORE regulation, MORE taxes and MORE power for government agencies and quasi-government bodies like the United Nations is going to be hyped by those who eagerly anticipate spending your tax dollars for their favorite charities--usually those causes with which they are personally involved.

It was only a little over 30 years ago that many of these same voices were shilling for the use of atomic weapons to melt the polar caps to combat Global Cooling.

When Global Cooling didn't catch on as a vehicle for more regulation and taxes, Global Warming became the fad. It will remain "the Next Big Thing" in climate change theory until the overwhelming weight of scientific facts crush it--just like it's Global Cooling brother.

How long will that take?

We don't have any idea. No pun intended, but cooler heads prevailed in the 70s and 80s.

But the climate changers of 30 years ago didn't have a Nobel Prize-winning ex-vice president eager to keep his name in the spotlight. The Political Correctness movement also wasn't as powerful, either. The PC crowd has had 30 years of practice labeling any speech with which they don't agree as "objectionable" or likening it to Nazism.

Newsweek was just as optimistic 30 years ago as the magazine is now.
Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any actions to compensate for the climatic change, or even allay its effects...The longer the planners delay, the more difficult they will find it to cope with climatic change once it becomes a grim reality.

Al Gore was still busy inventing the Internet and Bali was an exotic locale for Hollywood fantasies. The clever scientists at Knight Science Journalism Tracker weren't around to sniff out dissent.

Climate hysterics learned from that earlier lesson. No one who disagreed with the Globaloney in the 1970s were likened to Holocaust deniers. That was one thing they noted.

Anyone who is old enough to remember the last climate change fad also learned a lesson.

To give just as much credence to the alarmists today as they received in 1974-1975.

In New England, 10 More Inches of Evidence Pile Up For Man-made Climate Change

Man-made Climate Change spokeman offers
one possible cause for record-setting snow

The UN conference on climate change drags on in Bali.
The United States made a dramatic reversal Saturday, first rejecting and then accepting a compromise to set the stage for intense negotiations in the next two years aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions worldwide.

Evidence piles up

Meanwhile, most of the northeastern United States shoveled 10 more inches of evidence for man-made climate change.
New England dug out on Friday from a record-setting storm that dumped 10 inches of snow on Boston, more than the city typically sees in the entire month of December.

Thursday's storm hit hours before the afternoon commute, snarling roadways and leaving some travelers -- many of whom left their offices early only to face the storm's full force on the road -- stranded for hours during their trips home. Others had to abandon their cars or sleep in them after running out of fuel, local media reported.

Climate change advocates search for answers

More than 400 flights were canceled at Boston Logan International Airport.

The National Weather Service said the region could expect another blast over the weekend, when a second storm is expected to drop 6 inches of snow and sleet starting on Saturday evening.

Scientist United for Climate Change (SUCC) vow to continue important research

Thursday's snowfall set a new one-day record for December 13, and was more than the 7.8 inches that typically falls during the entire month of December.

Meanwhile, Al Gore moved on from the Bali conference to Switzerland, where he collected another honor.

The Effects of Magma on Ice: Science Trackers Remain Skeptical

DBKP to Fund Scientific Experiment!

The Knight Science Journalism Trackers said "What?"

Knight Science Journalism Tracker took issue with Little Baby Ginn's report on a report on the effects of superhot magma on Greenland's ice shelf.

Claiming to offer "Peer Review within Science Journalism" to the consumer of science news, the KSJT's Charles Petit presented the following.
One example.

The KSJT then offered LBG's "distorted" report as evidence.
Scientists: Greenland's SuperThaw Caused by Superhot Magna Not Global Warming

We know when we're whipped. The KSJT has caught us red-handed.

We should have checked with the KSJT's scientists first to make sure that the magma's temperature, mostly in the 700-1300 degrees Celsius range (but as hot as 1600 degrees), was hot enough to melt ice.

The Challenge: Can Frozen H2O withstand 700-1600 degrees?

We were impressed by Petit's listed credentials: "He lives in Berkeley, California, and has a bachelors degree in astronomy from the University of California at Berkeley."

And, he's the Head Tracker at KSJT.

We'll be the first to admit, we have no first-hand evidence to back up LBG's hypothesis about the effects of magma on ice.

We looked around the office in an all-out effort to locate some magma.

No dice.

So we decided not to fool around any longer.

To make amends, we've raided the office Christmas Party fund and Ginn's booked the next flight to Italy. There, at Mt. Vesuvius, she intends to test her theory about magma and ice.

Vesuvius: Nature at her most powerful--it could be dangerous

In the interest of science, I've agreed to accompany her to record the experiment and to bring along a cooler of ice. We plan on writing up the experiment and presenting the results to The Royal Society, which "is the independent scientific academy of the UK and the Commonwealth dedicated to promoting excellence in science."

Drilling into the Earth's crust may be required

DBKP realizes that we may have to do some drilling. But no expense will be spared in our quest to add to the body of knowledge. The subject's importance is too great to be a political football.

In the meantime, we offer Charles Petit and the other trackers at KSJT our apologies and an appropriate gift.

The Question: How best to say just how sorry we are

We do hope they'll accept.

Scientists: Greenland's Superthaw Due to Superhot Magma not Global Warming

According to scientists the Greenland ice shelves may not be melting from global warming but from the recent discovery of super hot magma beneath a thin layer of the Earth's crust.
In recent years, Greenland’s ice has been melting more and flowing faster into the sea—a record amount of ice melted from the frozen mass this summer, according to recently released data—and Earth’s rising temperatures are suspected tobe the main culprit.

But clues to a new natural contribution to the melt arose when scientists discovered a thin spot in the Earth’s crust under the northeast corner of the Greenland IceSheet where heat from Earth’s insides could seep through, scientists will report here this week at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

“The behavior of the great ice sheets is an important barometer of global climate change,” said lead scientist Ralph von Frese of Ohio State University. “However, to effectively separate and quantify human impacts on climate change, we must understand the natural impacts too.” [1]
Apparently this "hotspot" of hot magma sitting just beneath the northeast corner of Greenland is responsible for the record amount of ice melted. This is contrary to the "popular" Global Warming dogma where man and his "excesses" are the culprit.

Hotspots are responsible for more than just melting ice sheets.
Hawaii was created by a “hotspot” beneath the ocean floor. Hotspots form in areas where superheated magma in the Earth’s mantle breaks through the Earth’s crust. Over the course of millions of years, the Pacific Tectonic Plate has slowly moved over this hotspot to form the entire Hawaiian Island archipelago. [2]
Lead scientist Ralph von Frese:
“It could be that there’s a volcano down there,” he [lead scientist Ralph von Frese] said, “but we think it’s probably just the way the heat is being distributed by the rock topography at the base of the ice." [1]

A recent study found that there was a similar Greenland ice melt documented in the 1920's.
Professor Jason Box and undergraduate Adam Herrington, co-authors of the study, said their finding reinforces the belief that glaciers and other bodies of ice are exquisitely hyper-sensitive to climate change and bolsters the concern that rising temperatures will speed the demise of that island's ice fields, hastening sea level rise. They said their research might help discount criticism that the melting of Greenland 's glaciers is merely an isolated, regional event. [2]

No mention of the effects of the superthin mantle, hot magma or possibility of a volcano under Greenland's ice sheets just the "hand wringing" Global Warmist Alarmists.

Scientists studying the earth's core discovered that our Earth is the ultimate recycler of itself.
A huge slab of folded Earth that scientists think used to be part of the ocean floor has been detected near the planet's core.

The discovery supports the theory that Earth's crust is constantly recycled deep into the planet as molten material from below simultaneously pushes up to refresh the surface.

The structure is about 125 miles deep and at least 125 miles wide and 370 miles in the north-south direction. In consistency, it is more like a giant, folding mush of taffy, researchers said today. [3]
This recent discovery along with the one where it was determined mixing a thin crust with superhot magma makes ice melt faster is quite astounding in its simplicity. Both discoveries demonstrate that there is more to learn about this fascinating planet we live on.

That the "It's Global Warming, Stupid," crowd's frozen facts might be undergoing a little super magma melt of their own.

Where's the Liberal Love? Pope Comes Out in Favor of Science

Benedict calls for science, not dogmatic hysteria

Pope Benedict XVI called for more science and less dogma.

Normally, corks would be popping off champagne bottles wherever "Christian" and "science" are are seen as mutually exclusive terms.

Maybe next time.
Pope Benedict XVI has launched a surprise attack on climate change prophets of doom, warning them that any solutions to global warming must be based on firm evidence and not on dubious ideology.

The leader of more than a billion Roman Catholics suggested that fears over man-made emissions melting the ice caps and causing a wave of unprecedented disasters were nothing more than scare-mongering.

The German-born Pontiff said that while some concerns may be valid it was vital that the international community based its policies on science rather than the dogma of the environmentalist movement.[1]
Sounds reasonable.

Reaction from a rival faith, Worldwide Church of Man-made Climate Disasters, is expected to answer the Pope's call for more science with calls for more dogma--their own.

One adherent of WCMCD thought, Oliver Willis, said one factor in the climate change debate not often mentioned, was child rapists.
Conservatives are trumpeting this attack on climate science from Pope Benedict saying we should slow down on dealing with the problem. The Pope is free to say what he wishes, but people like myself are also free to note that the Pope also thought the Catholic church should slow down on rooting out child rapists. So, there's that.[2]
More from the Pope.
"Humanity today is rightly concerned about the ecological balance of tomorrow," he said in the message entitled "The Human Family, A Community of Peace".

"It is important for assessments in this regard to be carried out prudently, in dialogue with experts and people of wisdom, uninhibited by ideological pressure to draw hasty conclusions, and above all with the aim of reaching agreement on a model of sustainable development capable of ensuring the well-being of all while respecting environmental balances.

"If the protection of the environment involves costs, they should be justly distributed, taking due account of the different levels of development of various countries and the need for solidarity with future generations.

"Prudence does not mean failing to accept responsibilities and postponing decisions; it means being committed to making joint decisions after pondering responsibly the road to be taken."

Efforts to protect the environment should seek "agreement on a model of sustainable development capable of ensuring the well-being of all while respecting environmental balances", the Pope said.

He added that to further the cause of world peace it was sensible for nations to "choose the path of dialogue rather than the path of unilateral decisions" in how to cooperate responsibly on conserving the planet.[1]

The Pope isn't the only official in the Catholic Church to notice the missionary zeal of the WCMCD.
In October, the Australian Cardinal George Pell, the Archbishop of Sydney, caused an outcry when he noted that the atmospheric temperature of Mars had risen by 0.5 degrees celsius.

"The industrial-military complex up on Mars can't be blamed for that," he said in a criticism of Australian scientists who had claimed that carbon emissions would force temperatures on earth to rise by almost five degrees by 2070 unless drastic solutions were enforced.
Reaction from white trash skeptics was succinct.

Jebediah Murphy at Pirates Cove: "Well, I reckon the Pope is correct. It does need to based on science, rather then hysteria, hypocrisy, junk science, and a need create a world wide socialist paradise. Oh, and let’s not forget getting lots and lots of moola out of gullible climahysterics."

"Why else promote carbon offsets rather then just, ya know, advocating stopping the problem? I reckon we can’t say that all liberals are idiots, since a few, such as Michael Moore and The Goracle, know how to siphon money out of moonbat pockets."[2]

No More Mr. Nice Blog was even-handed about the papal assessment, questioning the Daily Mail's interpretation of what the Pope actually said.
A Reuters story on this papal message bears the headline "Pope Urges Prudence in Environmental Decisions." That's accurate. AFP's story is called "Environmental Policies Must Respect Needs of the Poor: Pope." That's accurate as well -- he does say that. But the Daily Mail has a vested interest in making you think that the Pope is an environmental skeptic. So it lied about his message.[4]
The Pope cautions against hysteria.

Expect more hysterical reactions to follow.

New Study Sheds Light on Global Warming:

Bad New for the New York Times,
Good News for Planet Earth

New study details how simple changes at New York Times
could help save planet Earth

A few changes could go a long way toward reducing climate change a new study released Friday showed. While it's good news for Planet Earth, it may be bad news for Editorial writers at the New York Times.

The United States could shave as much as 27 percent off the amount of greenhouse gases it emits at fairly modest cost and with only small technology innovations, according to a new report.

DeRhode Report on Reducing Greenhouse Gases

A large share of the reductions could come from steps that would more than pay for themselves in lower energy bills for industries, individual consumers, and long-suffering readers of the New York Times the report said, adding that people should take those steps out of good sense regardless of how worried they might be about climate change.

But that is unlikely to happen under present circumstances, said the authors, who are energy experts at DeRhode & Company, the consulting firm.

The report said the country was brimming with “negative cost opportunities” — potential changes in the reading, viewing and discussion of newspapers editorial policies, for example, that would reduce carbon dioxide emissions from the emissions of NY Times Editorial Staff meetings, even as they save money.

“These types of savings have been around for 20 years,” said Dr. Juan Morefor DeRhode, a director of the study. But he said they still face tremendous barriers.

"We've charted enormous potential resistance to any suggestion that the Times' writers take basic science courses to better acquaint themselves with what they are writing about."

But DeRhode said that the stakes are "so high it makes it all worth pursuing."

Another of the study's authors, Dr. Getta Klough, echoed DeRhode.

"The emissions from the editorial staff at NY Times, CNN, MSNBC and USA Today alone, well--they were off the chart. If these could somehow be limited, it would go a long way toward solving many of the problems of perception about climate change."

The study was released Friday in Washington, D.C. and was conducted by DeRhode and Company for DBKP.

Its release comes a week before a United Nations climate conference is to convene in Bali, and as Congress approaches a vote on proposals to limit emissions of greenhouse gases.
