Martin Eisenstadt-Palin Hoax: No Harm, No Foul

Your Ad Here

True Confessions:
Martin Eisenstadt Story a HOAX
The Hoax of Manmade Climate Change Still Not Reported

Sarah Palin Africa Story Leaker is a Hoax
--But, HOAX Quickly Discovered

Yesterday's story from an obscure blog, Martin Eisenstadt's Blog, claimed the author the source of the "Sarah Palin doesn't know Africa is a continent" news leak.

"Eisenstadt the source for Sarah Palin Africa leak...and Proud of it"

By now you’ve all heard the Fox News report last week that “unnamed” former McCain advisers
leaked that Sarah Palin was confused about whether Africa was a continent, and which countries were in NAFTA. I was perfectly happy staying under the radar as an anonymous source for Fox NewsCarl Cameron, but now that Palin has accused her accusers of being “unprofessional…jerks…cowards… taking things out of context, and then tried to spread something on national news” and begun to cast doubt on the Fox News report, maybe she’s right to a certain extent. For those of us on the McCain campaign who thought that she acted like a rogue diva and lost John the election, maybe we DO have a responsibility to come out in public. But Sarah… careful what you ask for: some of us may have more to reveal.

So yes, to be clear, last week I was the one who leaked those things to a producer at Fox News who works with Cameron. Carl and his producers are good guys, and I don’t want them to have to worry about protecting their sources (and going through the wringer ala Judith Miller or Matt Cooper) on something like this.

The story turns out to be as believable as the original leaks were.

That is, they were a hoax.

Some reported on the Eisenstadt revelation; some didn't.

The hoax was caught fairly quickly and alerts issued. MSNBC broadcast the hoax as fact before they caught it. Anyone who watched MSNBC's election coverage couldn't tell any difference in the network's accuracy--either before or after the hoax broadcast.

But we say, whether you wrote or broadcast it or not: it was discovered quickly, so no harm, no foul.

Allah Pundit summed it up pretty well, Video: MSNBC falls for Palin/Eisenstadt hoax

Specifically, this hoax. I’d love to throw stones at them and TNR, but people on our own side were taken in too.

Guys? The post at Shakespeare’s Sister revealing the hoax is linked on the first page of the Google results for “Martin Eisenstadt.” Remember these goofball viral “ads” for Giuliani? Anything look familiar?

The “Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy”? Named after one of America’s worst presidents, whose term in office lasted two years with zero foreign policy accomplishments?

We'd agree with all of that and add one observation. At least TNR didn't take months to report that they'd been had--unlike the Beauchamp diaries fiasco.

Some of the places commenting on the whole affair--both pre- and post-hoax--are listed below.

One Hoax Remains Unreported by the MSM

At least the Eisenstadt story was exposed early on. Most of the places who reported on it were good sports, such as ACE: HOAX: Martin Eisenstadt Admits He's One of Palin-Smear Leakers; Threatens to "Reveal" More

Now that I put a face to the made-up persona, I can see it seems a bit unlikely that a 28 year old NYC hipster-wannabe is a major McCain foreign policy adviser.

Well, he got me.

TNR Retracts... But refuses to credit Allah for alerting them to the hoax.

Note: A dinky site would notice the Hot Air traffic. Not only is Michael Crowley a dupe (as I was), but now he's a dishonest one, pretending that he discovered the hoax on his own.

The only thing we'd disagree with Ace about is the "dupe" label.

Once upon a time, the media reported news. If the news turned out to be false, they reported that also. Then, the name of the media game became, "We're going to hold stories until every last detail can be confirmed".

Fine.

But that policy then morphed into, "We're going to hold stories that we don't think readers have the finely-tuned understanding and reasoning skills about which to make a judgment".

Finally, that policy became--at many MSM outlets--"We're going to hold stories that we don't agree with or that we think are detrimental to our editorial policy".

That policy was responsible for ABC's refusal to air one minute of coverage on the John Edwards scandal--until Edwards turned up on ABC's Nightline on August 8 and started talking about mistresses and babies and hush money and getting caught in the Beverly Hilton.

Imagine ABC viewers' surprise when they learned that the story had been on-going for ten months and they were kept in the dark.

The New York Times, MSNBC, Washington Post, CBS, and the LA Times, among others, duped their readers/viewers for months during the primary and general elections on any number of unreported topics concerning Barack Obama.

They are duping them still on the issue of climate change, though that will be harder to pull off--especially when their news customers are digging out from underneath three feet of global warming.

So, the Eisenstadt 'confession' about the Sarah Palin leaks was a hoax.

Big deal.

It was quickly exposed in the blogosphere. Meanwhile, the other hoaxes which pass for 'news' in daily Mainstream Media reporting continue.

The Eisenstadt hoax was discovered and reported upon. It's a mistake to think that anyone reporting on the original story somehow had their credibility harmed when they quickly reported that it was a sham story.

The man-made climate change hoax has been discovered, but remains largely unreported in the Mainstream Media.

It's when long-running stories have two sides and readers/viewers only hear one of them from supposed "objective news sources" that credibility--and bottom lines--plunge.

Getting hoaxed? Big deal.

Continuing to report a hoax after there's doubt the story is true?

That's everyday policy at most MSM organizations.

African Press International, Michelle Obama Tapes: Fox News Denies Story

Your Ad Here

African Press International
Michelle Obama Audio Tapes

The [Almost] Final Chapter

Fox News Denies Negotiations or Airing of API Tapes

The final verdict is in on the African Press International story about it receiving a phone call from Michelle Obama that was, in API's words, "shocking".

That verdict does not bode well for African Press International. We will classify the whole episode "bizarre--though entertaining to some".

ALSO at DBKP on African Press International and Michelle Obama:

* African Press International, Michelle Obama: API Says Discussions with Fox News Are Happening
* African Press International, Michelle Obama Phone Call: Tapes Released Later Today
* Michelle Obama Calls African News Organization Over Obama Birth Certificate Reporting - UPDATED
* African Press International, Michelle Obama: Editor Says He Has Audio Tape of Conversation
* African Press International: Open Letter to Michelle Obama from API Chief Editor

The African Press International story started 16 days ago when API posted a story concerning a phone they allege occurred between one of their correspondents and Michelle Obama that had elements which API called "shocking".

API said that in the phone conversation, Mrs. Obama referred to Americans opposed to her husband's candidacy as "racists".

DBKP reported the story. We've since received emails, pro and con, about the alleged phone call and the API stories, which have turned into an Internet saga.

API said they recorded the call. Then that the audio of the tape would be released. Then, after delays, we took a powder on the story, deciding to wait and see.

During that entire time, we've been in contact with several individuals who have been involved in various aspects of the API negotiations. Their opinions of API changed--sometimes over the course of a single.

So, we waited.

The following story was posted on the API website today.

API/Fox News deal: Sean Hannity show and Greta Van Susteren’s show “On the Record” to air the Michelle Obama tape in less than 24 hours.

The agreement stipulates that any information on the day and hour the tape will be aired will only be announce 15 minutes to the airing time. This was agreed upon to avoid any pressure being directed to Fox News Network by individuals who would want to get the details about the tape in question.

The airing of the tape can take place any time from this day and due to its sensitivity, people who will inquire from Fox News and API for details will either get a no comment answer or that there is no agreement on the table.

Which invited the following responses, which we noted.

From This is JUST A LIE. IT IS THAT SIMPLE.

READ BELOW: THIS IS SIMPLY A LIE ABOUT ME AND I HAVE NO IDEA IF A LIE ABOUT FOX AND / OR SEAN HANNITY BECAUSE I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS STUFF BELOW IS. I HAVE NO IDEA WHO API (AFRICAN PRESS) IS…this is the first I have heard about them….BUT I DO WANT TO “KILL THE VIRUS” LYING ABOUT ME. (Note that I lifted only part of the quote below because I just wanted to correct the lie about me..the website goes on and on.)

Fox News Denies Involvement with Supposed Michelle Obama Audio Tape:

Exclusive: Fox News denies any involvement in the purchase of an audio tape apparently featuring an unflattering portrayal of Michelle Obama. In a widely-circulated Web post, an organization called African Press International claims to be in negotiations with the network to air the tape.

An FNC spokesman tells TVNewser: "API's dubious claim that FOX News has purchased a supposed audio tape to be aired prior to Election Day is absolutely false."

Today's post on the API Website reads:

A final agreement has been reached between African Press International (API) and Fox News Network (USA) on the dates to air the Michelle Obama tape arising from a discussion Mrs. Obama had with the API two weeks ago. The show will take place any day/time from now, with a 15 minutes alert on when it is to take place. Other programmes will be interrupted. This is a precaution taken to avoid interference from any quarter. In the agreement, Fox News Network will broadcast 39 minutes of the 54 minutes long tape.

ABC's Jake Tapper talked with Obama campaign senior adviser Robert Gibbs last week who told him no such tape exists. "It's bogus, she didn't call, it's all a lie," Gibbs says.

The entire episode seems strange: strange that API would post their latest story.

Strange because the rest of their posts, covering a multitude of stories from Africa, suggest no hoaxes, no scams.

We can't divulge the various opinions and back-and-forth for the emails we received over the last week. But we will say this: confusion among the various parties, including API reigned.

We will now post the following API information, plus and minus.

  • API believes they talked to Michelle Obama.
  • API has audio tapes of something.
  • API is a small organization and is not usually in the spotlight.
  • Some parts of API's story checked out. DBKP got proof--from some individuals that API referred to in their subsequent stories--that confirmed parts of API's stories.
  • DBKP received proof that these individuals were corresponding directly with API, as reported by API.
  • Apparently, the editor-in-chief of African Press International had made arrangements to fly to New York City. API reported that this was for an appearance on Fox News.
  • Previously, DBKP--despite numerous attempts--could not confirm or deny that API ever was in negotiations with anyone at Fox News.

Now, on the API minus side:

  • African Press International has not posted an audio tape of their alleged conversation, 16 days after the fact.
  • Numerous delays have occurred in the API timeline.
  • Individuals DBKP trusts have expressed doubts in writing to us with proof.
  • API's latest story about the appearance of the tapes on Fox News, which has been denied officially by a Fox News spokesman.

As always, readers can make their own judgments.

Our judgment, at present time?

The phone call could have taken place. African Press International could have audio tapes of the phone call. African Press International may believe it had an agreement with Fox News.

African Press International did receive emails of a harassing nature, as well as threats--from both sides of the political spectrum.

Is the story true?

As we reported sixteen days ago: we don't know.

The API story could be true.

However, based on 1) what we know from the latest reports from both African Press International and Fox News; and, 2) can report from the many off-the-record accounts we've received, we are throwing the cold water of hard evidence on the story.

We won't label it a "hoax" or "scam": there's no evidence any money was to be gained by African Press International. That failure to try and quickly cash in when API could have--along with their past 1000+ stories over the last two years--are two of the reasons we won't slam the lid on the coffin of this strange story.

However, we'll note that we wouldn't be betting the house on the story.

If there are further developments that DBKP can confirm, we'll, of course, report them. We will publish a complete wrap-up and timeline to the story--most probably in the next several days, time allowing.

For now, we'll quote a line from one of our off-the-record email conversations with one of the principals.

"This story will probably end up in the October Surprise graveyard."

Palin, WashPo: More Americans Believe in UFOs than Trust the Media

Your Ad Here

The Lackey Press

Remember the WashPo's "Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home" ?
Three times as many American believe in UFOs than trust the MSM

Remember yesterday's Washington Post story with the headline, "Palin Billed State for Nights Spent at Home"? Even those familiar with the ways of the Mainstream Media paused.

The WashPo staff writers, James Grimaldi and Karl Vick, must have labored hours to compile their story. It sounds ominous enough: was Palin the reformer was bilking the state through expense reports?

Here’s the lead paragraph:
ANCHORAGE, Sept. 8 -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has billed taxpayers for 312 nights spent in her own home during her first 19 months in office, charging a "per diem" allowance intended to cover meals and incidental expenses while traveling on state business.

Barbara Sowell, Digital Journal, "How To Manufacture a Daily Palin Controversy", observes:
If anyone bothers to read the entire article, it becomes obvious that not only is the title and lead paragraph very misleading, but apparently Palin was well within her rights as governor of Alaska to claim the per diem for her daily expenses while living at home in Wasilla because her office was at the state capitol of Juneau. Additionally, she requested per diem for her daily expenses, but not for lodging.

She then cites The Volokh Conspiracy for doing "a very good job of ferreting out the facts from the Washington Post article":

You have to read the article carefully to figure this out, but what the story ultimately reveals is that Palin: (a) billed the state for most expenses allowed by law, including per diem when she stayed in her own home (her "duty station" was the state capitol of Juneau) in Wasilla; (b) didn't bill the state for other expenses, when she could have done so lawfully, such as per diems for her children; and (c) spent a lot less money on expenses than did her predecessor, especially on travel and by ridding herself of the state's personal chef. [FWIW, she apparently maintained two residences, the governor's mansion in Juneau, which by state law is her official work "base" and where assumedly she didn't get a per diem (but where her predecessor had a personal chef whom she let go), and Wasilla, from where she commuted to Anchorage for work when the legislature wasn't in session. Saintly to take the per diem she was legally entitled to when in the second residence? No. Worthy of the lead headline on Washingtonpost.com? Please! Not illegal, not unethical, and not a scandal.]

This election, more than any other before it exposes the corruption of the Mainstream Media. There are now Washington Post readers--especially those only scanning the headlines--that have it in their minds that Sarah Palin abused her office by billing the "State for Nights Spent at Home".

In fact, the only abuse practiced here is the Washington Post for running the story as the lead on its website. It's abuse we've seen before and that we'll continue to see for the next 7 weeks.

However, in 2008, shady tactics practiced by WashPo will hurt the perp and not the target. There are other voices that, while at the moment, aren't singly as loud as WashPo, collectively now exceed it.

Within hours of the WashPo story being posted, others--such as Volokh and Sowell--were already publicizing the deception. That would not have happened in previous years for days.

Too late to be of any comfort to Robert Bork, but just in time for Sarah Palin.

Is it any wonder that big newspaper stocks and circulation continues to decline?
Meanwhile the Washington Post Company (WPO) is down about 28 percent over the same period, the New York Times (NYT) down about 10 percent. News Corp. (NWS), which bought the other big newspaper giant -- Dow Jones -- for some $5 billion last year, has seen its stock fall over 25 percent in the past twelve months.

Rusmussen reported last week that Americans, by a 10-1 margin believe the Mainstream Media is 'trying to hurt Sarah Palin'.

Big Media can protest all it wants about how "equitable" it is. With alternate news sources readily available these days, Americans are able to judge their objectivity for themselves--and they have, both in axing subscriptions and selling off their MSM stocks.

MSM apologists often liken those pointing out the widespread bias to "conspiracy theorists". One such writer at the Kansas City Star, during the John Edwards scandal, tried pinning that label on DBKP.

The fact remains, almost three times as many Americans believe in flying saucers (56%), than believe that the Mainstream Press delivers the news in an objective manner (19%). [INFO Wars: Sarah Palin, John Edwards Get Very Different MSM Coverage]

Talk about conspiracy theories.

Weird News 2007: DBKP's Top 44 Weird Stories

What was the weirdest story in 2007?

Now, you can decide!

Vote for your Favorite Weird Story of 2007

From the safety of what promises to be an utterly Non-weird 2008

The DBKP Top 44

What was the weirdest story of 2007?

There were certainly enough of them to choose from.

We've narrowed it down from 1000's of weird stories--there were hundreds at DBKP alone. We then scoured the Internet to add to our own rich storehouse of weirdness.

2007 was a boom year in Weirdness.

* A Moscow woman set fire to her ex-husband's penis as he sat naked watching television and drinking vodka. The couple divorced three years ago but continued to share a small flat.

"I was burning like a torch," the wounded ex-husband told Tvoi Den newspaper. "I don't know what I did to deserve this."
- - - -

Germans were weird in 2007.

* In another unusual living arrangement, a German man left his dead mother seated in her favorite armchair at their shared home for two years after her death of natural causes at age 92.

* Yet not everything that smelled like a corpse was really dead in 2007. In the German town of Kaiserslautern, police broke into a darkened flat expecting to find a corpse after neighbors complained of a nasty smell seeping out into the hallway.

But instead they found a tenant with very smelly feet asleep in bed next to a pile of extremely foul-smelling laundry.

* A 60-year-old German man stunned lawyers during his appeal hearing on a flashing conviction by stripping off in court.

* A German bus driver threw a 20-year-old off because he said she was too sexy for his bus. "He opened the door and shouted 'Your cleavage is distracting me every time I look into my mirror and I can't concentrate on the traffic'," the woman said.

* A German court awarded a man 3,000 euros ($4,100) after he lost the top half of his skull because of faulty hospital equipment. The man’s skull had to be replaced with plastic because the cold storage where doctors placed the top of his head during surgery turned out to be defective.

Since the head was not kept cool enough by the faulty fridge, it could not be reattached. The man now has a plastic prosthetic skull.

He sought compensation of 20,000 euros on the grounds that the prosthesis gave him headaches, adversely affected his balance and made him extra-sensitive to the weather.
- - - -

Wal-Mart made the Weird News Finalists in 2007.

* A security officer at the Wal-Mart store in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., had heard reports that a man commonly was doing something odd with hair spray each time he was in the store.

He watched for the man, spotted him, and followed him. Sure enough, he watched as the man took a bottle of pump hair spray off the shelf -- and drank it. He continued to follow the man as he drank a second bottle. The hair spray contains a significant amount of alcohol.

The unidentified man left the store without paying for the products, and was arrested on shoplifting charges. Security officer Christopher White noted the man had plenty of money in his pocket, so he asked him why he drank hair spray instead of just buying booze.

The man replied that he is "a hard-core alcoholic" and doesn't go into liquor stores because "the temptation was too great."

* The rivalry between Pepsi and Coke turned violent in Indiana, Pa., when a Pepsi deliveryman allegedly punched his Coke counterpart in the face three times.

The Coke driver suffered a broken nose and a black eye in the scrape, which occurred in a Wal-Mart parking lot.
- - - -

* There were sadly many deaths in 2007 that were hardly noticed, such as in Zagreb, where a Croatian man who boarded a night tram and died in his seat rode through the city for more than six hours before the driver discovered he was dead.
- - - -

* Unusual diets made headlines in 2007 -- such as: "No more crispy duck at Beijing toilets." Food stalls attached to Beijing's public toilets were banned ahead of the Olympics after complaints over toilets with poor sanitation.

* Also in China, 66-year-old Jiang Musheng said 40 years of swallowing live tree frogs and rats helped him avoid intestinal pain and made him strong.

* British artist Mark McGowan ate a meal of meatballs made from a dead corgi dog in a protest against animal cruelty. He said the corgi, which died from natural causes, tasted terrible.

* Criminals filled odd news headlines around the world. In the United States, two Colorado men were accused of plotting to kill a man with rattlesnakes in a dispute over a $60,000 poker debt.

"It's a story out of the Wild West -- there's poker, rattlesnakes and unsavory characters," said Lance Clem, of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. "You've got a bunch of snakes becoming involved with a bunch of snakes."

* In Sarajevo, two armed men disguised as Muslim women in burqas held up a bank and escaped with $40,000.

* A Zimbabwe man stole a bus because he needed transport to get his driving license.

The most unfortunate criminal award goes to the next entry.

* An unnamed 41-year-old man from Val des Monts, Que., Canada, suffered a seizure from a crack cocaine overdose. That apparently disturbed his dog, a pit bull terrier, which then "took a bite out of him" under his ear, police say.

His housemates, whom police said were also high, tried to save the man from the dog by swinging at it with a baseball bat. They missed, instead hitting the man in the face. He was taken to a hospital and doctors found a plastic bag in his rectum; it contained 10 grams of crack.

Police were called and charged the man with possession of drugs with the intent to traffic -- and with owning an illegal breed of dog.
- - - -

"Stick 'em up! Or I'll get you gooey!"

* A robber succeeded in escaping with 613 pounds (US$1,236) from a bookmaker's shop in Leicester, England. The clerks there assumed he had a gun hidden in a bag he pointed at them, but it wasn't.

"In fact, what was contained within the carrier bag was the defendant's girlfriend's vibrator," the prosecutor told the judge. Nicki Jex, 27, admitted to the crime and was sentenced to five years in prison.

* * Two convicted murderers are among 13 escapees from a prison in Sudbury, Derbyshire, England, in recent months. But most of the men, including the murderers, are still at large because police won't release their photos, since that could breach their human rights.

"When making a decision to release any photograph, police forces must take into account numerous factors including the public interest test," lectured a police spokesman, "whether there is a strong local policing purpose and, of course, the Human Rights and Data Protection Acts."

So now what? The spokesman said by escaping, the felons "abuse the trust we have placed in them," and "it's up to us to trace their whereabouts."
- - - -

* A man who was addicted to alcoholic enemas died after having one based on sherry. Texan Michael Warner, 58, died of alcoholic poisoning with a level of 0.47%, almost six times the state's legal limit of .08%. And just what are the legal consequences of helping out on a fatal alcohol enema?

His wife, Tammy Jean Warner, 45, was charged with manslaughter after administering the enema for her hubby but the case was dismissed because of insufficient evidence.

She claimed that her husband was addicted to enemas and often used alcohol in them to get drunk.

* Lisa Marie Nowak, the former NASA astronaut who in February was so anxious to get to a romantic rival, she donned NASA-approved diapers for a drive from Texas to Florida. Ms. Nowak didn’t want to have to deal with the pesky detail of finding a rest stop along the way.

Other details in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution report concerned crying and chemical sprays and a BB gun, but it’s just all too complicated.

* From the Atlanta newspaper came the tale in March of the Barbie Bandits, so called because of their blond ponytails and tendency to giggle as they robbed banks in their designer jeans and trendy sunglasses. Not surprisingly, they were captured when they took a break to visit a local salon for root touch-ups.

* Springtime 2007, a Berlin woman drove her son to a robbery, as we told you in May, because she was afraid he would get hurt if he went without her. Apparently neither mom nor the kids were very good on the details, as all were captured and the mother, at the wheel of the getaway car, received three years and 10 months in prison.

* In La Paz, the winner of a Bolivian beauty contest was stripped of her title moments after her coronation when judges noticed she was wearing false hair plaits

* Climate change found its way into weird news. A Hummer owner in Russia's St. Petersburg gave activists the green light to pelt his oversized vehicle with rotten eggs and tomatoes.
- - - -

* Iowa State Fair Board President Jerry Parkins has suggested that the fair discourage the annual "erotic corn dog-eating contest" as "inappropriate". Radio personality Steve Pilchen, who runs the event, said only women have ever entered the contest, and "we stress technique." The winner is chosen by crowd applause. He notes several condiments are available to competitors: "We had ketchup and mustard, but the big hit was mayonnaise."

* Every story needs a happy ending and Bangkok delivered for this one. A 76-year-old Malay Muslim woman from southern Thailand got on the wrong bus 25 years ago and got lost, ending up living as a beggar at the other end of the country.

But in 2007 she was finally reunited with her family.
- - - -

* Rebekah Rice says that in 2003, when she was 15, fellow students at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., teased her about her Mormon religion with taunts such as "Do you have 10 moms?"

She admits that when she was exasperated with such teasing in her freshman humanities class she responded "That's so gay!"

School officials then took quick action: she was given a written reprimand for her "offensive language," even though no one complained. Her parents sued the school district demanding they remove the reprimand from her record, claiming harassment and discrimination since the school never tried to stop the religious taunts.

The judge in the case ruled the Rices didn't prove discrimination, and that being "picked on and teased by boorish and uncaring bullies" is "part of what teenagers endure in becoming adults." The reprimand will stay in her record.

* The Frazier Park Lake near Ulysses, Kansas, has been dry for at least 20 years, so the city planned a $735,000 project to fill it by using the lake bed to hold its wastewater, rather than use nearly the same amount of money to refurbish the plant's evaporation ponds.

There's only one problem: an unusually snowy winter has filled the lake with water. The city therefore plans to drain the lake so the project can proceed.
- - - -

* A group of campers in Portland OR tied a peeping Tom suspect to a tree, keeping him bound until police arrived.

* Seventy six year old Hialeah City Councilman Jose “Pepe” Caragol has drawn fire over his political slogan, “If you like oral sex, vote Caragol for council” in the upcoming city council election.

Caragol says he never meant to offend but that “people want to give it (oral sex) a negative connotation.”

* It's not the most usual way of fixing a technical problem, but Nepal Airlines recently decided to sacrifice two goats to appease a Hindu god following problems with one of its aircraft.

The goats were sacrificed in front of the troublesome Boeing 757 with the hopes that it would please the sky god Akash Bhairab. And it appears to have worked; "The snag in the plane has now been fixed and the aircraft has resumed its flights", Raju KC, a senior airline official, told the Reuters news agency.
- - - -

* Sergei Morozov, the governor of Ulyanovsk region in Russia, declared the day to be a "family contact day" and encouraged couples to have sex instead of working. The whole scheme is part of a wider aim to improve population growth in the Soviet Union. If a day off work was not enough to tempt people then prizes for people who give birth nine months later on Russia's national day – June 12th – include cars and televisions.

* Men could reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer through regular masturbation, researchers suggest.
They say cancer-causing chemicals could build up in the prostate if men do not ejaculate regularly.

And they say sexual intercourse may not have the same protective effect because of the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted infection, which could increase men's cancer risk.

* It was just another morning at the senior center: Women were sewing, men were playing pool — and seven demonstrators, average age 76, were picketing outside, demanding doughnuts.

They wore sandwich boards proclaiming, "Give Us Our Just Desserts" and "They're Carbs, Not Contraband."

At issue is a decision to refuse free doughnuts, pies and breads that were being donated to senior centers around Putnam County, north of New York City. Officials were concerned that the county was setting a bad nutritional precedent by providing mounds of doughnuts and other sweets to seniors.

A month-by-month Weird News round-up of 2007.

* In January, Joseph Pisirak of Lombard, Ill., spent 30 consecutive hours in a recliner in a sports bar defending his 2006 title of Ultimate Couch Potato. Contestants received short breaks but otherwise were required to always have their eyes on the screen and thus on the game. When a game ended, they were treated to endless reruns of the same Sports Center program.

* In February, the story of the Fish ‘n Flush. This throne for the royal guy in your home who already has everything is “a clear two-piece toilet tank that replaces a standard toilet tank.”

Company officials say it is a “sure-fire conversation starter” and that many parents are using it to entertain the kids during toilet training. It’s a pretty expensive tutor at $299, and that doesn’t include the fish, although we suppose it is pretty convenient when Goldy goes belly up.
- - - -

* In April, Reuters gave us the story of a beauty pageant in Saudi Arabia in which “the legs are long, the eyes are big, the bodies curvaceous.”

But don’t look for the bathing suit competition, as the contestants come out for the judges just as bare as they day they were born.

Calm down. They were camels. Winners — or rather, the winners’ owners — were awarded SUVs and bids for the animals that reached six figures.

* In June, a couple of doctors in India, reported Reuters, allowed their 15-year-old son to perform an operation in the hope of getting his feat into the Guinness Book as the world’s youngest surgeon.

* In July, some Memphis, Tenn., women spent the hot days mowing lawns while wearing bikinis. One young thing who works for the landscaping company noted that they got plenty of attention, and not just for their attention to detail with an edger.

* In August, police officers in Thailand are forced to wear armbands picturing the cartoon character Hello Kitty for minor infractions such as littering, parking illegally or coming in late to work. This item should remind us all that there are different degrees of punishment. This one sounds pretty harsh for a macho man of the law.
- - - -

* In September, a couple of college freshmen in Boston found out that a part-time job when they should be studying isn’t such a good idea. Especially if they advertise their sideline by yelling out their dorm windows stirring up interest in the marijuana they have available. It was reported they didn’t make it to their sophomore year.

* In October, a Pittsburgh man tried to pass funny money and got a little angry when the cashier at a grocery store wouldn’t take his $1 million bill. The largest bill ever printed was for $100,000, but the highest bill in the United States has been the C-note since 1969.

* The Jockey company sponsored a contest in November in which people were invited to send videos of themselves dancing in their drawers with the hope of winning a $5,000 grand prize.

* And finally, in December, a man stopped by police in Somerset County, Pa., for a broken taillight ran away from the officers, went home, shaved his mustache, changed his clothes — then went to the police station to report his truck as stolen.

He was cited for drunk driving. Big surprise.

Thank goodness the presidential elections are coming up. There shouldn't be any weird news there.

2008 couldn't be any more weird.

Could it?

McCain Campaign Officials Pressure NYTimes To Kill Lobbyist Story

Battle Between McCain and New York Times

Battle Within the Times Itself over Story

To Publish or Not to Publish?

Names have been named in the John McCain Storying Quashing Story.

The latest report from Drudge details a heated media battle, not only between Senator John McCain and the New York Times over publishing a story about "special treatment" to a lobbyist, but also, a battle within the Times itself.

The decisions being made are said to frustrate certain Times staff.

Could one of the frustrated staff have been responsible for the leak to Drudge?

Somebody talked.

The latest on the McCain Quashing incident from the Drudge Report.

Just weeks away from a possible surprise victory in the primaries, Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz has been waging a ferocious behind the scenes battle with the NEW YORK TIMES, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, and has hired DC power lawyer Bob Bennett to mount a bold defense against charges of giving special treatment to a lobbyist!

McCain has personally pleaded with NY TIMES editor Bill Keller not to publish the high-impact report involving key telecom legislation before the Senate Commerce Committee, newsroom insiders tell the DRUDGE REPORT.

The paper's Jim Rutenberg has been leading the investigation and is described as beyond frustrated with McCain's aggressive and angry efforts to stop any and all publication.

Who was the lobbyist in question?

What did the "special treatment" consist of?

Drudge reports of a battle between the paper's Jim Rutenberg and a reporter working on the McCain story and Times' editor, Bill Keller.

More:

The drama involves a woman lobbyist who may have helped to write key telecom legislation.

The woman in question has retained counsel and strongly denies receiving any special treatment from McCain.

Rutenberg, along with reporter David Kirkpatrick, has been developing the story for the last 6 weeks.

Rutenberg had hoped to break the story before the Christmas holiday, sources reveal, but editor Keller expressed serious reservations about journalism ethics and issuing a damaging story so close to an election.

McCain campaign officials Rick Davis, Charlie Black and Mark Salter are also said to have met with the NEW YORK TIMES in an effort to halt publication.

Drudge has "Developing" on the story, so expect to see more added to the McCain-Times story soon.

Little Baby Rosie:
"Bill Clinton Made Me Cry!"

"A Classic Democrat Love Story"
as told by
Rosie O'Donnell

It's a classic Democrat love story involving Bill Clinton and Rosie O'Donnell. It takes all the twists and turns of any good story. First, Bill has Rosie's love, then he loses it. Finally, all is well: Rosie breaks down and Bill is begging for forgiveness, not just from Rosie, but from himself.

The tales as told by the New York Post:
ROSIE O'Donnell says Bill Clinton had her bawling like a baby during an emotional chat in which the ex-president apologized for cheapening the Oval Office with his Monica Lewinsky sexcapades.

The sapphic supernova, doing stand-up at the New York Comedy Festival Tuesday night, told the audience how Clinton sent her a card after she slammed him during a performance at the Mohegan Sun Casino Hotel five years ago, The Post's Mandy Stadtmiller reports.

"He disgusts me," O'Donnell recalled saying at the casino show. "And I know I'm not supposed to say this because I'm a good Democrat, but I didn't want to [talk] to him because he lied to me when he said, 'I did not have sexual relations with that woman,' and then put the scarlet-letter [bleep]-job on her for the rest of her life . . . I still hate you!"

When the corpulent comic called the phone number Clinton included with his note, Bubba himself picked up, she said.

"My knees got weak. I was like, 'Can I [bleep] you?' No, I didn't say it, but I felt it - I was like, 'Whoa! Whoa!' And he said, 'I was at your show the other night, and I was sorry that you didn't come over and say hello to me. And I know that you're still harboring some hard feelings,' " O'Donnell related.

"And I said, 'You know, listen, here's the deal, dude. I've been disappointed by men my whole life. I loved JFK, my mother loved JFK, and you were the JFK to me. And you let me down, man. You killed me and that hurt me a lot, and when you hurt me, I don't know, I didn't expect that out of you and I thought you could do better for your wife, for the country and just in general."

Clinton then worked his charm on O'Donnell. "He goes, 'I'm sorry for all the men who ever hurt you, I'm sorry that I hurt you. Everything you've said to me, I've said to myself, and I hope one day you can forgive me, and I hope I can forgive me.' "

Clinton's mea culpa quickly had O'Donnell's faucets opening up. "I'm hysterical crying," she recalled.
So one supposes that it has ended well for the both of them: Rosie's no longer crying and, from most reports, Bill's forgiven himself.

A good example of why love stories--even the Democrat ones--always make people cry.

Sniff.

A Comedian in Mayanmar??

The Story of Zarganar

I know, I know.

What's funny about Mayanmar? Monks beaten, people killed, and other pictures of death, destruction, mayhem and all the other things in life we could do without. Unless of course, you're into that kind of thing--in which case, just show up at a MegaDeath concert in suit and tie.

Anyway, this is the story of one comedian's battle against oppression and gloom. Zarganar is his name and his story was brought to our attention by TherapyDoc. We liked the story, and to tell the truth, we couldn't resist the temptation to put up a video of a Mayanmar comedy club. You most likely won't understand the language, but you'll understand that everyone's having a good time.

In a place where good times are probably at a premium right now.

Now we'll let TherapyDoc tell her story.

Who? What? What's this doing on TherapyDoc's Blog. This isn't a political blog!

Yes, but I hate the thought of priests beaten and herded off to jail in Yangon, Mayanmar. (Burma in years past). And there's a good joke in the WSJ that you might not have heard.

Maung Thura (Zarganar, or tweezers in Burmese) is a comedian who makes his living sending up the Mayanmar Military Regime. Before the regime, Zarangar spoofed Gen. Ne Win in the 1980's. The comic is fearless, heroic.

He's probably not in Myanmar at this moment or it's likely he'd be in jail. But they say he's there, still telling jokes.

Zarangar was in dental school when he realized he was just too funny to be a dentist. And he HAD to speak out politically. The Al Franken, I suppose, of Asia.

You might remember the rebellion last month, Burmese priests and throngs of people marching in defiance of bans imposed by Myanmar’s ruling military junta. Between 300 and 2ooo people have been detained (depending upon your news source) and hundreds are said to have been killed. I was under the blissful influence of media-deprivation, busy in the synagogue and the succah

In 1988, it was students, brutally crushed, who protested against the Myanmar Junta. Over 3000 are thought to have been killed, many more tortured.

I tell you all this to keep you honest, to keep you grounded. We think we have problems and we do, we do. I'm not minimizing. I'm relativizing.

Here's Zarganar's little joke, straight out of Christopher Rhoad's front page article.

George Bush, Hu Jintao (China's president) and Than Shwe (Myanmar's military leader) went to visit God.

Bush asked God, 'When will the U.S. become the most powerful nation in the world?'

God replied, 'Not in your life,' driving Bush to tears.

Mr. Hu then asked when China would become the richest nation in the world, which drew the same "not in your life" answer from God and tears from the Chinese president.

Finally, Myanmar's ruler asked when his country would have enough water and electricity. This time it was God who broke into tears, saying, "Not in my life!"

He has funnier jokes, of course.
Read the rest of the story.

Good, huh?
We enjoyed the story.
Even if we couldn't understand a word.
