Beware of Imposters!

Pixelaneous #40

imposter n. One who engages in deception under an assumed name or identity.

We have never ran two Pixelaneous in the same day. However, this also came under the heading of "Public Service Announcement".

Human-Animal Embryo Research Gets Approval to Begin in Britain

"O brave new world
That hath such people in't!"

--Shakespeare

The story in the Times was matter-of-fact.

What was considered the stuff of science fiction and horror films only years ago will now get the government stamp of approval.
Experiments to create Britain’s first embryos that combine human and animal material will begin within months after a government watchdog gave its approval yesterday to two research teams to carry out the controversial work.

Scientists at King’s College London, and the University of Newcastle will inject human DNA into empty eggs from cows to create embryos known as cytoplasmic hybrids, which are 99.9 per cent human in genetic terms.

As always, the possible cure of some dread disease will be held out as the justification of it all.

The experiments are intended to provide insights into diseases such as Parkinson’s and spinal muscular atrophy by producing stem cells containing genetic defects that contribute to these conditions. These will be used as cell models for investigating new approaches to treatment, and to improve the understanding of how embryonic stem cells develop.

The reactions to the Times' article was as could be expected.

Most were not happy at this once-random "Act of God" being usurped by man.

"Why not just merge a human and a jackal to create the anti-christ and be done with it."
--Louis, Arlington, VA

"Barbarous. Unspeakably vile. H.G. Wells' 'Island of Doctor Moreau' has become a reality. God help us all."
--Bosco, Bantry, Ireland

The Times went on to say.
Some critics of cybrid embryos have argued that their use is no longer necessary, given the recent development of a reprogramming technique that can turn back the clock on adult tissue to make “induced pluripotent” stem cells with embryo-like properties, but the HFEA licence committee rejected this.

And their readers went on to say.

"This is an OBSCENE TRAVESTY!!! This has NOTHING to do with "science". There should be stiff international penalties for this kind of work!

To say this is for the "betterment of mankind" is, in itself a disgusting and inexcuseable vanity!

This should be a crime and those "scientists" who engage in this kind of "research" should receive maximum punishment for their crimes against God, humanity and nature.

Pssshhh, If god was very, very annoyed, he'd have toasted us all a long time ago. He's just chilling up there, watching us like a sitcom. I bet we're hilarious."
--Dan, USA,

"Its been being done for years. They have just gotten good enough at it now to go public. You are already riding the bus with hybrids. God is very, very annoyed."
--Escapee, Oak Ridge,

"Egads! We can now rename the British Isles the Isles of Dr. Moreau."
--DavidC, Middletown,

"And I though the "The Island of Dr. Moreau" was far fetched when I read it as a kid. I have to admit that the whole thing sounds like a bad idea to me. I just hope there are no bad consequences."
--Pete, New York City, USA

"Armageddon is right around the corner."
--Jasper, Seattle, Washington

"Why in the world would anyone want to do research like this? paging Dr. Frankenstein!"
--Kathleen, Sacramento, California, USA

"it looks to me like the island Dr. Moreau. Yup, it's going to be that, the Matrix and Planet of the Apes all rolled up in one.

there is a saying is easier to destroy than to create. these people may not be happy with there own existance."
--luis, new york,

"Somewhere in some secret lab, there probably already exists a pathetic half human/animal."
--Tom, Washington, DC, US

"Will it taste like chicken?"
--Jeff, Austin, Tx

"Come on people, this is nothing new. We've been performing human sacrifice for thousands of years. It's just a new god, and a lab instead of an altar."
--Think, Holland,

Of course, the smart set will deride anyone who questions this as a "caveman" hoping to set back the cause of "progress" and "science".

Where once the Bible was held up to unthinking masses as proof something was right, good and necessary, now "Science" takes its place.

And this is only the beginning.

Beast of Bolivia: Mystery Beast on Loose

Even a Mystery Beast has to eat

Question: How do you know a Mystery Beast has been at your place?

Answer: Your pit bull's dead, your animals are scared and your Puppy Chow's all gone.
An unknown predator mauled a pit bull and killed two puppies in Brunswick County, and residents fear it's the same animal that killed three dogs in September. No one has reported ever seeing the animal.

The county's animal control agency investigated the animal's tracks, droppings and other clues but couldn't determine what attacked the dogs. Locals call the unknown animal the Beast of Bolivia.

Some residents and experts said the predator may be a bear, a wayward panther or cougar, or even a wolf because 3-inch paw tracks were found at the scene.

Many suggest the predator came from the nearby Faircloth Zoo, which had a lion and a tiger before it closed more than a year ago. Animal control officials said the animals were sent elsewhere.
Well...

We know it isn't Michael Vick.

Bambi's Revenge:
Deer 1, Hunter 0

PETA must be as happy as a pig in slop.

First, came the news that a dog had shot a man. Now, a deer gets the best of a hunter. The sad story of an unknown, unlucky hunter, from the Grand
Junction Sentinel
:
A northwestern Colorado man was injured Sunday after a deer gored him while he was hunting about 15 miles south of Craig, according to the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Randy Hampton, spokesman with the DOW’s northwest region, said the man was hunting with at least one other person in the Hamilton area.

Hampton did not release the victim’s name.

“He or his hunting partner shot a buck deer, downed it and went to the buck,” Hampton said. “The animal stood up and gored him.”
Isn't there some kind of a hunting "Law of the Woods" or something you can turn to? Is it that easy for a shot deer to jump up and gore you?

Questions a careful, thoughtful hunter might consider before starting out next time.

Liberty-Loving Lobsters on the Lam

by Mondoreb & Little Baby Ginn

First thing in the morning, one wants to read something uplifting, something about animals running in the open meadow, breathing the air of the free. Of lobsters making a break for it?
Lobsters in Germany took fate into their own claws and broke out of an Asian supermarket. They now face a brighter future in an animal home.

From Spiegel:
Dozens of lobsters destined to be boiled alive made a successful getaway from an Asian supermarket in the German city of Stuttgart in the early hours of Sunday morning, police said.

The clawed crustaceans, some of them up to 15 centimeters long, managed to crawl out of their crates, which had been poorly secured with wire mesh, then scurried across the floor of the supermarket and squeezed through the metal shutters covering the front of the store. The front door had been left open by mistake.

"The breakout was successful," Katrin Brandeis, spokeswoman for the Stuttgart police, told SPIEGEL ONLINE. "Passers by alerted the police at 1:45 a.m. reporting a large number of the animals heading down the street."

The escape may have saved their lives. "These animals weren't ever going to be pets," Brandeis said. "Now they've been taken to an animal home. The supermarket hasn't got in touch with us."
Run, little lobsters, run. Or whatever it is that lobsters do when they're in a hurry.

PIXELANEOUS: Weekend

Animals Gone Wild

by Mondoreb

Sunday morning break time. Time for a look at how nature provides animals with an amazing array of defenses.

A look at LGF taking on the mainstream media?

If no nuts can be found, then may the Force be with them.

And a reminder of what happens when an animal can't defend itself: slavery.

That's our look at how nature provides for it's creatures. No animals were harmed in the making of this pictorial.

A variety of sources were used: Funny Junk was one. MMoabc was another. Others have been around the Internet for a long time.
