Ronald Ernest "Ron" Paul (born August 20, 1935) is a Republican United States Congressman from Lake Jackson, Texas, a physician, and a 2008 U.S. presidential candidate.

Originally from Green Tree, Pennsylvania, he has represented Texas districts in the U.S. House of Representatives (1976–1977, 1979–1985, and 1997–present). Paul placed a distant third in the 1988 presidential election, running as the Libertarian nominee while remaining a registered Republican.

After his 1961 graduation from Duke University School of Medicine and a residency in obstetrics and gynecology, he became a U.S. Air Force flight surgeon, serving outside the Vietnam War zone.

Paul has been described as conservative, Constitutionalist, and libertarian. He advocates a non-interventionist foreign policy, having voted against actions such as the Iraq War Resolution, but in favor of force against terrorists in Afghanistan. He favors withdrawal from NATO and the United Nations.

Having pledged never to raise taxes, he has long advocated ending the federal income tax and reducing government spending by abolishing most federal agencies; he favors hard money and opposes the Federal Reserve. He also opposes the Patriot Act, the federal War on Drugs, and gun control.

Paul is strongly pro-life, advocates overturning Roe v. Wade, and affirms states' rights to determine the legality of abortion.

Throughout his 2008 presidential campaign, Paul has been a leading candidate in Republican straw polls, though he has had substantially lower numbers in landline opinion polls. He has strong Internet support, leading in web searches and YouTube subscriptions.

On December 16, 2007, Paul had the largest one-day fundraiser in U.S. political history, raising over $6 million in 24 hours through a grassroots effort, organized independently from the official campaign.

Ron Paul and the Non-Debate: RP Supporters Not Kooks, One Guy Though...

NOTE: 99% of Ron Paul supporters we come into contact with are regular, everyday people. When they write and email us, they are pleasant--passionate to be sure--but genuinely nice people.

That's one of the reasons we've never bashed Dr. Paul and his supporters: someone needs to attack the overweening nanny state and it's insane intrusion into more and more aspects of everyday life.

Ron Paul is a principled Libertarian who never misses an opportunity to attack an ever-growing federal government. We can't do anything but cheer for him on that issue.

We don't agree with Ron Paul on all of the issues. But we don't have to: we still wish him well, even if we're not working for his campaign.

But it only takes a few over-wrought supporters--apparently viciously abused during potty-training as a child--to alienate potential allies.

We have purposely not joined in the gratuitous Ron Paul bashing taking place in many venues because it seems to us a lot like hitting the double chocolate dessert buffet at Happy Wong's 'World's Biggest Asian Food Smorgasbord': it might feel good at the time, but you just have to work your ass off the next day to undo the damage.

Against our better judgment, we're gonna vent a little.

We made phone calls, fielded emails and generally spent yesterday chasing down the details of the supposed Fox News Debates that had excluded Ron Paul.

ORIGINALLY, we were going to write that we didn't see how this could benefit Fox, Republicans, or Ron Paul. When we first heard the exclusion, we were concerned: a viewpoint that should be heard more was going to be heard less.

In the course of writing the post, we suddenly had the thought: why can't we find anything out about this "Debate"?

Fox is in business to get publicity and viewers.
If they were holding such a high-profile event, why would they put it on double-secret probation?

So we stopped and started checking.

In the meantime, we started getting emails and comments, and saw 10 times the amount we got on other blogs and websites.

"Screw Fox! It's a conspiracy!"

NOW, this wasn't most RP supporters, just a couple. But those couple supporters were little armies-of-one.

We continued to check.

Mr. X Searches for More Evidence of Non-Existent Debate

Late last night ( or early this morning) we found a piece we thought summed up what we had been able to find out. All of its facts were checked and its tone was reasoned. It was by a Libertarian, to boot. It was a post by William Westmiller at Nolan Chart.

We then got a comment from a disgruntled RP supporter--Mr. X, by name.

After calling us 'morons' and telling us who he had talked to and his theories on everything from Ron Paul to how Vince McMahon planned on taking over Chippendales using a juiced-up combat team of pro wrestlers (kidding on the last one), Mr. X really got upset.

Right about then, we learned for sure what we had privately been saying most of yesterday and what we said when we put up William Westmiller's article: there was no debate.

It was a spoof by Big Head DC. AP got sucked in, as did tons of other people. When we were checking out BHDC's site, we saw what may have been a world record for consecutive comments on a post by the same person using his real name: Mr. X.

They started out reasonable enough and Mr. X, like us was asking for verification. But his tone soon changed and, like some of his buddies, he was sure that the conspiracy--any conspiracy--was out to get him.

Mr. X Gears Up for Next Big All-Nighter

NOW, we're not upset (anymore). As Mr. X himself said in one of his posts to us: he'd been up all night. Lack of sleep will impair anyone's judgment: ours included.

I just spoke to John Moody, Sen VP at Fox News, who implicitly acknowledged the existence of the forum.

Who do you claim to have spoken to in the last 12 days who said it was canceled?

We would have said "Try reading our stories, Grasshopper. There you will find the knowledge you seek."

But we're kinda tired too.

We aren't trying to make fun of Mr. X (Okay, okay, so we are. Sorry.), we're just saying when we were writing this, it occurred to us how many other people we spoke to that were pleasant and helpful.

Ron Paul has a lot of really nice supporters who believe in his message and work hard and donate their money to help him out.

They build 60-foot signs along Interstates, go to rallies, talk to people, put up blimps, wear crazy wigs and paint their faces, call in talk shows, write emails and relentlessly search the Internet for any news of an overly-neglected congressman with a principled Libertarian message: in short, what any candidate would love to see his supporters do.

We take issue with calling these thousands of mom and dads and ex-Marines and Boy Scout leaders "kooks". They aren't. They see Ron Paul as an antidote to a federal government that doesn't seem to know quite when and where to quit meddling in people's everyday lives.

We don't have to agree with Paul on every issue to appreciate a candidate that has galvanized everyday people into getting involved in the political process.

The same people who propose putting a voter's registration certificate in every box of Captain Crunch in order to cure voter apathy are--in some cases--the very same people who are dissing Ron Paul and the ordinary people who've decided to participate in the political process by supporting him.

Our advice and wishes:
1- Don't believe everything you read on the Internet, including DBKP.
We try hard, but we sometimes don't quite get things right. We 'fess up when that happens, though.
2- Don't use Ron Paul (or any candidate) to vent your spleen at your particular bogeyman. If you don't like Fox, bash him in your own name.
3- Ron Paul's supporters are not all kooks.
Ron Paul's raised, by our calculations, about $20 million dollars at $50 a clip. That's not one guy with a spambot. That's a lot of mom and pops and aunts and uncles.

And finally,
4- Mr. X, get some sleep.

At 7:50 pm December 30, 2007 I shouldn't be hard on Mr. X. He was trying hard to run down the story and he was full of passion and got tired. I was tired too. When I get tired, I put up funny pix. If I ever get a chance to meet Mr. X--maybe at the Republican Convention--beer's on me (limit: 2).

Hillary Vs. Paul: Rasmussen Poll Not So Surprising

The headline promises long-concealed information just now coming to light: the story delivers something else: a bland look at how many Americans have opinions of Hillary Clinton vs. how many have heard of Ron Paul

A recent Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey featuring a match-up between Hillary Clinton and Ron Paul highlights one of the perils that comes from overanalyzing poll results between candidates with different levels of name recognition.

In that survey, Clinton held a fairly modest 48% to 38% lead. But, a careful look at the results tells us a lot about the public’s opinion of Hillary Clinton and virtually nothing about their opinion of Ron Paul.

The story goes on to say what is well-known: more Americans have heard of a former first lady than of a Congressman from Texas.

Why? First, because just about everyone in the United States has an opinion of Hillary Clinton. She has been a major player on the national and international state for 15 years. Half the country has a favorable opinion of her and half holds the opposite view, but all have an opinion. Our most recent survey results show that nearly 60% of voters have a strongly held opinion about the New York Senator and former First Lady.

As for Ron Paul, 42% don’t know enough about him to have an opinion one way or the other. He’s one of 435 Congressman whose life is way below the radar screen for most Americans. Still, his presence in the GOP Presidential Debates has raised his profile a bit--26% now offer a favorable opinion and 32% say the opposite. But, only 16% have a strongly held opinion about Paul (7% Very Favorable, 9% Very Unfavorable).

The reaction to this "news" will be predictable: the Ron Paulistas will shout it out that it's proof their man is the Great Bright Hope; the equally-rabid anti-Paulistinians will paste it up as more proof that Paul is getting too much attention. It's getting so there is a definite negative element to covering any news of Ron Paul. Even more so for the disinterested observer trying to play it straight.

Us? We thought about it and decided to comment on this story instead of this weekend's NFL games.

Moral of Paul-Alex Jones Tale: Take "Attack" Button off Auto-Pilot

David Fredosso of The Corner at National Review Online makes the same point that has been bothering any fair-minded observer of the feeding frenzy that is all things Ron Paul:

On the Right, or in parts of it anyway, hatred of Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) arguably matches or even exceeds antipathy toward Hillary Clinton. So eager are conservative bloggers to pounce on Paul that a number of them have accused him of "paying" $1,300 to 9/11 conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

Fredosso then goes on to reveal this little gem:

The "payment" to Jones (and yes, it is that same Jones) was not a payment at all, but a partial refund of Jones’s $2,300 contribution. It is clearly marked as such, if you look in the right place on the electronic FEC forms. Paul's spokesman said he put a line in to the campaign treasurer when he noticed it being discussed on the blogosphere, but that's the answer he's going to get.

That sound you hear is certain bloggers scooping up myriad forks and knives to help choke down the barrels of ink written damning Paul for "paying" this scoundrel. One doesn't have to be a Ron Paul supporter to note the salacious glee that every tainted contribution brings to a select portion of the right wing blogging brotherhood.

Sure, Paul has his crazed minions; so does Hillary, Rudy and anyone running for President. But there's something of the smell of chum in the water when the Paul campaign pulls a boner.

Allah Pundit of Hot Air, offers a tight-lipped apology--sorta.

Duly noted and duly corrected. You’ll find the disbursement here about three-quarters of the way down. I could have done without the insinuations of laziness (”bloggers can’t be bothered to do five minutes of research”), especially when bloggers are credited in the same post for having discovered the donation from Don Black — can the campaign “not be bothered” to police for that sort of thing, given their unsolicited yet rising support among white supremacists? — but kudos to Paul for returning, well, not quite all of Alex Jones’s filthy $2,300 but a good-sized chunk of it.

Call it an apology with an attack addendum added to the end. A. Pundit goes on to add one more observation.

The first step is always the hardest.

Couldn't agree more. A little less Attack -Paul-on-Autopilot might be good advice for my fellow right wing madmen.

It takes a big pundit to admit a mistake.

UPDATE: He is a big pundit. Allah puts up a Paul ad video "to make amends". That's the spirit. As MadisonConservative comments at Hot Air: "The integrity of Hot Air stands untarnished. Let’s see Kos make such a retraction." Those were my thoughts exactly. They'd be heading to the mattresses and hunkering down.

At the same time, some over-zealous Paulistas attack DBKP for quoting those who link Jones with white supremacy and the Troofers. I need another cigar.

Like the man says: some days, no good deed goes unpunished.

Ron Paul Campaign: One Contribution Does Not A Neo-Nazi Make

Evidence that the Ron Paul campaign received a donation from a Neo-Nazi White Supremacist is reported a bit breathlessly by the Lone Star Times. While it is news, is it the earth-shattering scoop the anti-Paulistas will spin it into?

From the Lone Star Times:

[a] contribution to the Paul campaign by a known white-supremacist has been identified.

The evidence is as follows:

* Black proudly and openly identifies himself as Stormfront’s guiding hand, and publishes a contact address on the Internet– PO Box 6637, West Palm Beach, FL, 33405
* A search by LST of public databases indicates that there is only one “Don Black” residing in West Palm Beach, Florida, zip code 33405
* A 7/16/01 USA Today article identifies Black’s wife as being named “Chloe”
* That same article identifies Chloe as being the ex-wife of close Black associate and former “Grand Wizard” of the Ku Klux Klan, David Duke
* Minutes of a 9/7/07 City of West Palm Beach code-compliance hearing identify “Chloe H. Duke” as owning a residential property located at 203 Lakeland Drive
* According to Federal Election Commission records, on 9/30/07 the Ron Paul presidential campaign received a $500 contribution from a Mr. Don Black, who lists his address as 203 Lakeland Drive and identifies his occupation as “self-employed/website manager”

In light of these facts, we believe our previously asked questions continue to have merit.

One sympathizes with anyone in the news business: in this age of instantaneous communication, any news is old news in a matter of minutes. Any digging up of facts not previously known is an achievement.

Opponents have tried to attach the pro-Nazi label to the Paul campaign for some time now. Paul should be held to no higher or lower standard than other candidates: they have all had donations from groups or individuals who espouse a variety of disagreeable views. That's America: one's free to donate to whomever one wishes.

A disinterested observer will conclude that any campaign receives hundreds of contributions and it's hard to scrutinize each one. This especially applies to the Ron Paul campaign, with its thousands of small donation supporters. The campaign should be given some time to address the issue before trying to tar them with the "Nazi Supporter" brush.
