Hillary has been doing my work again. It's not that she has been trying to derail Barack Obama using the tactics we used against her and Bill in '90's. It's not that she has been trying her best to make him unelectable. It's not even that she has been sinking her own party. It's that she has been so stupid to let the right manipulate her and play her like a cheap guitar.

She is the gift that keeps on giving--to the vast right wing conspiracy, of which I have been a loyal member. And here's the best part, she has been befriended by members of the right, like Richard Mellon Scaife. Others, like Sean Hannity, have come to her aid. She has even appeared on Bill O'Reilly twice. Thank heaven she's just that dumb.

You see, Hill doesn't understand that the only reason we are being so nice to her on the right is that we really, really, really want to run against her in the fall. We really can't run against the black guy, because most of us can't say "black" without sounding like we are card carrying members of the Ku Klux Klan. Which is just totally unfair to us. Many of us, like myself, stopped carrying the cards a long time ago and just attend the weekend rallies and weenie roasts. Nothing says good eating like a weenie roasted over a burning cross!

Hill doesn't understand that as soon as the primaries are over, and she is the nominee, we will come down on her like Larry Craig on a teamster at a truck stop bathroom. We have years of material saved up, chirons we are itching to splash across the television screens of America, stories saved up about how she murdered Vince Foster, killed some teenagers in Arkansas, and smuggled drugs in and out of South America.

What she doesn't know won't hurt Fox News' ratings in the fall. When the Fox News Network becomes all Hillary bashing all the time.

So I raise my glass to you Hillary. Thanks for doing my job for me. See you in Denver, when we totally rip you a new one!

Richardson Flies From Clinton's Coop: Endorses Obama

Bill Richardson, former Clinton Secretary of Energy, now former friend and crony, has left the Clinton nest and flown straight to the Obama camp, endorsement in hand with visions of a Vice-President slot dancing in his head.

In an email sent to the Obama camp Richardson praised Hillary as "a distinguished leader with vast experience" while gushing about Obama who would be in Richardson's words, "a historic and great president who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad".

According to the Brit newspaper, the Telegraph, foreign corespondent Toby Harden claims Richardson's importance as an endorsement force ranks third after Al Gore and John Edwards. He also writes that Richardson's decision was perhaps, a "sheer naked political calculation" as Richardson has "made it clear he desperately wants to be Vice President".

Hillary Clinton Announces Edwards' Exit, Was "It" for the Right Price?

The day after the Republican primary in Florida produced John McCain as its winner, a new surprise was reported by the AP:

DENVER - Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters' sympathies, The Associated Press has learned.

All sappiness regarding Edwards aside the more interesting story tagged on to the side was Hillary Clinton's "announcement" during an interview this morning with King5 News in Seattle.

Despite the fact that Edwards had not made a formal or informal announcement that he was dropping out of the presidential race, Hillary told the King5 News Team that Edwards had called her on the phone to tell her that he was dropping out.

Hillary gave a glowing referral to Edward's campaign while giving her own stump speech as to why Edward's supporters should support her.

We wondered what was behind the scenes with Hillary and Edwards little telephone talk
and whether Edwards knew Hillary would be announcing his departure from the race.

We also wondered if any deals had been made, if Edwards was given any promises of future positions within the Hillary cabinet, perhaps even the V-P slot.

We were surprised to hear of Edwards' impending departure as Edwards had said he was going to stick to his campaign all the way, even if he failed to score in next week's Super Tuesday, that he intended to ride his campaign bus to the doors of the Democrat's convention held in Denver in late August.

We saw a different side to Edwards than the AP reporter, Nedra Pickler, did.

Yes, Edwards did have "high" ideals, on poverty, on the working class guys, on "corporations" that screwed the "little guy."

Edwards talked a good talk but never walked the walk. The former Senator from North Carolina had spent more time campaigning for President than the time he served as Senator. Edwards first run in the 2004 Democrat presidential campaign landed him a spot as John Kerry's VP running mate.

The Kerry-Edwards coupling failed to win despite a close race. Some say Edwards began to plan his "campaign" to win the 2008 Presidential campaign soon after the 2004 defeat.

Despite his "new" message of "working" for the underdog, the underclass, and all things "under," Edwards message failed to garner the votes he needed in the primaries, coming in third behind the battling polbots, Hillary and Obama.

As a solid third place finisher, Edwards does have a voter base, which both Obama and Hillary would benefit from.

Hillary's "announcement" that Edwards was quitting the race told us that the Edwards base will be hand delivered to her via Edwards during his "so long" speech, but for a "price."

Could it be a VP slot or the Hillary cabinet, such as Attorney General. All we know it won't be for chump change. Politicians never, ever do anything "for free."

Time will tell what the Hillary-Edwards deal entails, whether the "price was right". Unless this morning's revelation from Hillary wasn't pre-approved by Edwards.

Then, perhaps, it will be Obama's turn to "spin the wheel."

Fred Thompson Announces New Hampshire Pro-Life Endorsement

Endorsement comes as some call Thompson the winner in ABC Debate


In the run-up to the New Hampshire primary this week, the Fred Thompson campaign announced another endorsement from a conservative, pro-life group.

Yesterday, Fred Thompson announced the endorsement of Citizens for Life, the New Hampshire affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee.

"Granite State voters like no-nonsense candidates who stand up for their beliefs. Fred Thompson is such a candidate," said Roger Stenson, Citizens for Life Executive Director.

"Fred Thompson had a 100% pro-life voting record as a member of the United States Senate. For all of us who care about the dignity and sanctity of human life and the most basic freedom upon which our nation was founded - the right to life - Fred Thompson is a leader of great promise."

Citizens for Life is the 14th state pro-life organization to endorse Senator Thompson for President.

"I'm blessed and honored to have the endorsement of Citizens for Life for President of the United States," said Senator Thompson.

"These folks in the Granite State are the 14th organization coast to coast that has voted to endorse my candidacy, and more likely will, because they know I have stood with them yesterday, I stand with them today, and will stand with them tomorrow. They know I have the ability to win this election. They know I believe in the sanctity of life and as President I will do all that I can to do to protect life."

The Thompson campaign also issued the following statement.

Fred Thompson is pro-life. He believes in the sanctity of human life and that every life is worthy of respect. He had a 100% pro-life voting record in the Senate and believes Roe v. Wade was a bad decision that ought to be overturned.

He consistently opposed federal funding to promote or pay for abortion and supported the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act, the Child Custody Protection Act, and President Reagan's Mexico City policy. While Fred Thompson supports adult stem cell research, he opposes embryonic stem cell research. He also opposes human cloning.

As Fred Thompson got a much later start than the other candidates, organizational help from such grassroots groups as New Hampshire Right to Life most likely will come in handy in the days immediately before the New Hampshire primary.

The endorsement comes on the heels of an encouraging--some called it a "winning"--performance in the ABC News Republican debates. The Thompson effort will try to build off of both the debate performance and the pro-life endorsement.

The Atlantic's Marc Ambinder's appraisal:

On points, Fred Thompson won the debate.

Every answer was thoughtful and well-crafted; his tone matched the tone of the question; he wisely refrained from interjecting in the back and forth squabbling. He very deftly reminded viewers that he served on key Senate national security panels and is bringing his experience to bear.

Even his insults were subtly and gently constructed In some ways, Thompson did McCain’s bidding. You skeptical readers can tell me that if Thompson had finished a solid fourth in Iowa, I might not be writing about Thompson at all, that said, he's still a candidate, and his performance tonight tells me his mind is not elsewhere.

Thompson has seen a steady, late-building stream of conservative endorsements come his way.

After the campaign's late start, they'll no doubt need every one of them.

But there's a long way to go and many, many people have yet to even put "politics" on their front burner--let alone make up their minds.

A late start won't matter to that late-deciding horde of voters.

The way I remember it, I first met Rielle Hunter in a nightclub called Nells in early 1987, although the circumstances of our first meeting seem to be in dispute. In my defense I can only say that events of that decade are not always as clearly etched in memory as we might wish, and neither of us was living a very sober or reflective life back then. At that time Rielle’s name was Lisa Druck, and when she wasn’t out at nightclubs she was taking acting classes. One of her most striking traits was her obsession with truth-telling and her horror of being lied to, something that I certainly took directly from Lisa. When Lisa moved to Calfornia and got married I lost track of her, though I was reminded of her whenever someone would ask me, at book signings and lectures, what I imagined happened to Alison Poole after the book ended — whether I saw her as turning her life around or not. Through the grapevine I picked up occasional reports from the West Coast. I heard that Lisa had changed her name to Rielle, that she’d gotten divorced, and that she was increasingly engaged in various spiritual quests which she attempted to explain to me when I finally ran into her; all I could tell for certain was that she was a far happier person than I remembered. Recently she returned to Manhattan and one sunny afternoon in Washington Square Park, attempted to enlighten me on the subject of her own enlightenment.

The Enquirer, once on the scent of a scandal, is not only relentless, but also generous in opening the hearts and mouths of those in the know.

The woman linked to Presidential candidate John Edwards in a cheating scandal is more than six months pregnant and telling a close confidante that Edwards is the father of her unborn child, The NATIONAL ENQUIRER has learned exclusively.

The NATIONAL ENQUIRER's political bombshell comes just weeks after Edwards emphatically denied having an affair with Rielle Hunter, who formerly worked on his campaign.

But The ENQUIRER has now confirmed not only that Rielle is pregnant, but she is also living in Chapel Hill, N.C. in a gated community, just a few streets away from Andrew Young, who has been a key official in Edwards' campaign.

Young has been in charge of looking after Hunter, according to sources, and she has been careful to stay out of sight during Edwards' campaign. A former Director of Operations for Edwards' campaign, Young's last official position with the campaign was North Carolina Finance Director.

He left that job about a month ago — nearly the same time Rielle relocated from the New Jersey area to Chapel Hill.

In a bizarre twist, Young, a 41-year-old married man with young children, now claims HE is the father of Reille's baby.

But others are skeptical about his claim and talk of a political cover up is heating up.

"I've come to the conclusion I just want the country to see who I really am," Edwards declared earlier this year, when asked about his involvement with Reille Hunter.

But a source close to the 43-year-old divorcee says Rielle has told a far different story privately.

"Rielle told me she had a secret affair with Edwards. When she found out that she was pregnant she said he was the father."

Rielle loves Edwards and will do anything to protect him, the source said.

The NATIONAL ENQUIRER has obtained exclusive photos of a visibly pregnant Rielle and learned from close sources that she has been in phone contact with Edwards. That information has not been denied by anyone.

"Rielle told me while Andrew Young is a friend, she's not romantically involved with him," says the source close to Rielle.

Expect the photos of the visibly-pregnant Hunter to be released in the next few days. The Enquirer usually whips up an audience's appetite before it delivers the goods, i.e., the photos that John Edwards wishes weren't about to grace supermarket check-out lines from coast-to-coast come next week.

Meanwhile, until John Edwards submits to DNA testing, expect denials and outrage--what else is there to do?

Ron Paul: Record Fund-Raising Sign That Candidate "Ready for Primetime?"

The battle against low name recognition may finally be turning for the Ron Paul campaign.

The Paul campaign has had no trouble generating enthusiasm from supporters, but low name recognition has hindered the Texas doctor. A fund-raising record and a rise in the polls may indicate he's ready for a break-out.

Dismissed by critics, both in the media and in the political sphere, Paul's campaign made a bid yesterday to prove it's "ready for primetime".

The candidate continues to show grass roots support; his campaign have broken their own one-day on-line fund-raising record.

Back in November, the Paul campaign raised $4.2 million online in one day with what they call a "money bomb," a fundraising gimmick devised by Trevor Lyman, a musician and self-appointed Paul fundraiser profiled by The Times Dan Morain yesterday. Sunday's gimmick was to celebrate the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party on a website with a drawing of Paul that looks remarkably like that president on the penny.

The Paul campaign has shown surprising strength in fund raising and on-line polls, but that has yet to translate into mainstream poll numbers.

However, this was a time for the campaign to celebrate. The amount wasn't raised by a small group of large donars, rather it was an avalanche of small donars--via the web--that drove the fund-raising.

As of shortly after midnight Sunday night Pacific time, the Paul website was reporting more than $6 million raised on Sunday from more than 30,000 donors and an amazing fourth-quarter fundraising total surpassing $18.1 million. The little-known pro-life Texan, who favors abolishing much of the federal government and the Federal Reserve, could raise the most money of any Republican candidate this quarter. A spokesman said the average donation was $50.

The Texan's campaign has not been shy about deploying innovative, attention-grabbing fund-raising methods. They have spurred on giving by everyday donars giving small amounts.

Today, they're at it again. Hoping to detonate what they call a "money bomb," the supporters started fundraising at midnight Saturday and have already raised $2 million as of about 10:30 a.m. today, more than at this point on Nov. 5, according to figures they posted online. They hope to collect a total of $10 million by midnight Sunday.

Besides the 'money bomb' idea, they've used Guy Fawkes Day and yesterday's anniversary of the Boston Tea Party as symbols of their 'back to the Constitution' campaign.

Paul supporters had planned to dump at least some tea into Boston Harbor to commemorate both the Tea Party of 1773 and their 2007 fund-raising idea.

The clever ideas have made an impact on the 2008 campaign. While some other candidates have reported difficulties making ends meet, Paul has been quoted as saying he's "not sure how to spend all the money".

If the reported money number holds up when officially reported to the Federal Election Commission in early January, Paul will not only be the only Republican candidate to oppose the Iraq war, he'll be the only GOP candidate to increase fundraising totals each quarter this year--from $640,000 to $2.4 million to $5.1 million to whatever this quarter's final total becomes above $18 million with two weeks to go.

Paul's poll numbers in "reliable" polls have risen from 2% to 4% into the 8-9% range now.

Before the Presidential campaign season started, few outside Paul's home state of Texas had heard of the libertarian Congressman. Name recognition nationwide was low but continues to grow.

Although Paul's poll numbers have only climbed from zero to the high single digits, the fundraising totals (he raised five times as much as Mike Huckabee in the third quarter) have brought "the Ron Paul Revolution" broader attention and credibility and the ability to advertise in the early voting states. With the funds his campaign has, among other things, produced a 30-minute TV biographical documentary to be broadcast across Iowa this coming weekend and available online here. Next Sunday morning a network TV audience will get a chance to see him grilled by Tim Russert for a full hour on "Meet the Press."

Ron Paul's campaign has been accused of being largely Internet-driven. The accused stands happily: guilty as charged. The fund-raising record was credited in some circles as being a product of Web 2.0.

His legions of alert supporters scour the internet for slights to right, frequently crudely, and any opportunities to promote their strict constructionist candidate. They dismiss the polls as slanted and the money-raising as the real indicator of the 72-year-old ob-gyn's growing national support among disaffected Republicans, Democrats and previous non-voters.

Ron Paul's campaign continues to be a polarizing one, generating intense loyalty and zeal among believers and equally intense scorn and ridicule from opponents, both in the political arena and in the media.

One thing is for sure: it's getting harder to dismiss Paul as a fringe "kook" as some have been doing.

Paul's fund-raising muscle and his steady rise in mainstream polls indicate that he may now be ready for prime time.

Mike Huckabee has found that along with press love comes press scrutiny.

Touted with headlines such as the "surging" Huckabee, the "Huckabee support strong" and "Surprising Huckabee", Huckabee's campaign has to now deal with the "A Son's Past Deeds Come Back to Bite Huckabee" headline and story at Newsweek.

Under the mug shot from the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department of son, David, is a story detailing Jr. Huckabee's past run-ins with the law: allegations of torturing and hanging a stray dog, being arrested with a pistol at the Arkansas Airport and allegations that dad Mike leaned on some people to keep the dog story from escalating.

One issue likely to get attention is his handling of a sensitive family matter: allegations that one of his sons was involved in the hanging of a stray dog at a Boy Scout camp in 1998. The incident led to the dismissal of David Huckabee, then 17, from his job as a counselor at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Ark.

It also prompted the local prosecuting attorney— bombarded with complaints generated by a national animal-rights group—to write a letter to the Arkansas state police seeking help investigating whether David and another teenager had violated state animal-cruelty laws. The state police never granted the request, and no charges were ever filed.

But John Bailey, then the director of Arkansas's state police, tells NEWSWEEK that Governor Huckabee's chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request.

Bailey, a career officer who had been appointed chief by Huckabee's Democratic predecessor, said he viewed the lawyer's intervention as improper and terminated the conversation. Seven months later, he was called into Huckabee's office and fired. "I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job," Bailey says Huckabee told him.

One reason Huckabee cited was "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem," according to Bailey. "Without question, [Huckabee] was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son," says I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, who worked closely with Bailey and called him a "courageous" and "very solid" professional.

There have been whispers that Huckabee advocates have dropped phone messages to voters questioning candidate Mitt Romney's Mormon faith. Huckabee himself made a sly remark that implied that Romney believed Jesus and Satan were brothers.

Questions cut both ways: now questions are popping up about Huckabee's son and Huckabee's involvement in quashing an investigation.

Perhaps the allegations are nothing more than rumors or sly remarks from rival campaigns. Either way, the national press is now paying attention to them.

As we earlier stated in articles, Huckabee is just the latest in a long line of 'media darlings'. When the press ends its fickle love affair, often times the break-up is acrimonious.

You gotta give her credit--Hillary's not letting her fall in the polls get her down.

The former First Lady takes to the air in an effort to bolster her sagging ratings in Iowa.

It's a bird. It's a plane. It's a Hill-A-Copter!

Or so the Clinton camp has branded a helicopter that the candidate will fly around in during her "Every County Counts Tour" across Iowa, beginning Sunday.

Campaign staffers are calling the tour a five-day blitz across Iowa's 99 counties, but Clinton herself will only appear in 12. Husband/President Bill and "others" will hit the remaining 87 checkerboard jurisdictions that make up the Hawkeye State.

“In the final days before the Iowa caucuses, I want to tap into that spirit so that every voice is heard on caucus night for universal health care, a stronger economy and an end to the war in Iraq,” Candidate Clinton said last night in Iowa, according to a press release.

This is exciting. Almost like the "Perils of Pauline".

Fred Thompson Kentucky Leadership Team Announced

While the press continues its dalliance with the "next big thing", Mike Huckabee, Senator Fred Thompson quietly continues to put the pieces together.

Headed by a Congressman, Jamie Comer, and a State Senator, Julie Denton, Fred Thompson's presidential campaign announced their Kentucky leadership team today.

The group included 5 State Senators and the majority of the Kentucky Republican State Representatives, including the Majority Whip, Carroll Gibson and the House Minority Leader Jeff Hoover.

The Kentucky crew put together by the Thompson campaign is impressive. It counters those reporters who still think the story of Thompson's presidential run is that the Senator and his campaign are "lazy".

As we noted yesterday, this is one more brick in the Fred Thompson for President wall.

Senator Fred Thompson continues to solidify his conservative Christian base. He picked up another endorsement today. This time it's from Dr. Gary Cass, head of several evangelical organizations.

The Washington Post's headline read "Clinton NH Campaign Manager Warns Obama Will be Attacked on Drug Use".

It was correct. The attacker was Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The Clinton campaign responded today to the threat of Sen. Barack Obama overtaking the former first lady in the polls.

Billy Shaheen, the co-chairman of Hillary Clinton's campaign in New Hampshire, raised the issue of Sen. Barack Obama's past admissions of drug use in discussing the relative electability of the Democrats seeking the presidential nomination today.

The Clinton campaign has wasted no time in dealing with what it must consider an electoral challenge from the junior senator from Illinois.

Barack Obama's open admission of his youthful behavior is no secret and he's made no attempt to conceal it.

Contrast that with the sly way Shaheen worked the issue of drug use in the statement from New Hampshire.

"The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight ... and one of the things they're certainly going to jump on is his drug use," said Shaheen, the husband of former N.H. governor Jeanne Shaheen, who is planning to run for the Senate next year.

Voters will likely forgive Obama for youthful indiscretions.

This latest attack may remind voters that Hillary Clinton's indiscretions have been a bit more recent.

Past Media Darlings McCain, Dean Might Warn Huckabee: The Press Is A Fickle Lover

Any candidate that is the media's darling ought to start looking over his shoulder.

Mike Huckabee has joined the ranks of such early campaign 'Media Next Big Things' as John Dean and John McCain. Both fascinated the media in early campaigning.

They fascinated the voters to a lesser extent.

Candidates should beware when journalists trot out that Pre-Primary Label of Doom--"groundswell". As in what reporters think they'd hear, if they had put their ears to the grounds anywhere other than the in press tent.

Also, unlike Iraqi War strategy, this is one "surge" they can get behind.

Huckabee is the latest groundsweller. The word usually signifies the support a candidate suddenly receives from press regulars tired of writing about nothing.

At least the NY Times' ADAM NAGOURNEY had the good sense to dampen some of the recent enthusiasm showered on the former Arkansas governor in the press.

Nagourney started out upbeat.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for this to happen,” Mr. Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, said by telephone Sunday as he prepared to board an airplane here. “It’s everything we’ve been working for.”

The article showcases some concerns of the Huckabee campaign.

The biggest concern should be the one that journalists point to while touting Huck as the Next Big Thing.

The Des Moines Register’s poll found that support for Mr. Huckabee had gone from 12 percent in October to 29 percent now. That and other recent polls suggest that Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Romney are in an extremely tight contest. That showing came despite the fact that Mr. Huckabee has been hugely outspent by Mr. Romney on television and has not campaigned in Iowa since Nov. 8.

All the breathless reporting of Huckabee centers around the fact that his poll numbers are up to--29%?

In Iowa.

In December.

This Huckabee press spin is nice; be reminded though, the attention showered today can quickly disappear when another candidate starts looking "sexier".

Still, one can't begrudge the attention Mike Huckabee's been getting lately: he's a likable fellow and the news people do need something to write about. It's really harmless fun when you think about it. Still, Mike Huckabee might want to cast a backwards glance over his shoulder.

Just to see if anybody other than the press is back there.
